wait, somewhat alleviated by spending time taking pictures in front of the original sign and marveling at some of the patrons attempting to navigate the pebble-filled parking lot in high heels. The food was, as always, worth the wait - and we promptly decided that dinner would most likely not be necessary, as we couldn’t imagine eating another thing for at least another three days or so. We finished up and headed on the next leg of our journey, the famous lighthouse, the self-proclaimed “End of the World.”

Having recently realized that we had never been to this summer hotspot during the actual summer months, a busy holiday weekend seemed like the ideal time to go. Armed with a handful of late 90’s teen pop CDs and my trusty iPhone navigation system, we headed out. Of course, Long Island traffic is a force to be reckoned with on any normal day; add to it a two-lane road with speed limits ranging from 55 to 25 mph, throw in a few unfamiliar tourist types - and you have yourself a solid two-hour journey to contend with, at least. Eagle Pride Shines West Babylon School District administrators, board of education members, faculty, family and friends gathered on the West Babylon Junior High School field to celebrate the commencement exercises of the Class of 2017 on June 23rd. Led on to the field by administrators, the soonto-be graduates marched to “Pomp and Circumstance” courtesy of the band, which then led “The StarSpangled Banner” and “God Bless America.” Mary Chasen, president of the Class of 2017, welcomed guests to the ceremony. She spoke to her classmates about living in the present and enjoying the time right here and now. “Look at the person you are right now,” she said. “This ceremony will end and we will all be different. We all have pieces of this community and when we leave here, we will carry them off with us.” Salutatorian Michael Lee talked about what lies ahead as they enter college or the workforce. “High school is full of challenges and obstacles that seem
unconquerable,” he said. “I believe hard work and dedication are the keys to success. When new challenges arise, don’t fear them; face them.” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Yiendhy Farrelly acknowledged different individual students in the Class of 2017 who left their mark on West Babylon Senior High School. “Throughout this school year, I have seen, heard and witnessed many of these accomplishments,” she said. “ As you begin your next chapter, you will find easy days and you will find challenging ones. Be resilient; don’t forget to take care of yourself. Find gratitude and appreciation in every day.” Before valedictorian Christina Capobianco took to the podium, the chorus performed their senior medley – featuring “Breakaway,” “Fix You,” “I Hope You Dance,” “Home” and “Unwritten” – before the band ended with “Like an Eagle.” Capobianco urged her fellow classmates to take risks. “This is the ending of the first chapter of your life,” she said. “Some of us
have an idea of where we want to be five, 10, 20 years from now. Even if you have planned every detail, be open to change and keep an open mind or you might miss an unexpected opportunity for greatness. You will never know the journey that awaits you if you never leave the comfort and safety of your home. Keep true to who you are and where you come from. Remember what your values are and never forget your roots. It takes fortitude and selfawareness to succeed. Sometimes it’s going to be hard to go against the crowd and make the right decisions.” Before conferring the diplomas to each member of the Class of 2017, West Babylon Senior High School Principal Dr. Ellice Vassallo told them: “Your four years have gone quickly but you have made the most of them. You leave the high school a better place because you were here.” After tossing their caps high in the air, friends and family joined the graduates on the field to celebrate.
A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE - Prior to the end of the school year, members of the North Babylon High School graduating Class of 2017, who started their academic careers at Marion G. Vedder Elementary School, returned to their old stomping grounds to reunite and mingle with their former teachers. The program, which featured a breakfast and photo montages of the students from their elementary years, was designed to give the seniors an opportunity to take a trip down memory lane prior to beginning their journeys into the future. Christmas in July Adventureland’s Helping Hands Foundation will be collecting toys during the entire month of July for Stony Brook Children’s Hospital and the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island. Our goal is to exceed the 1,000 toys we collected for these charities last July. Toys can be dropped off at Adventureland’s Main Ticket Booth or Back Ticket Booth every day in July from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Donors will receive a free giveaway for each toy they donate. The Helping Hands Foundation and Adventureland, in collaboration with Cox Media’s 102.3 WBAB and 106.1 BLI, will be hosting Christmas in July themed activities and events every Saturday from July 8th to July 29th, including live musical performances and even visits from
Santa! Santa will be at Adventureland from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on July 15th, 22nd, and 29th to take photos with guests. Ronald McDonald will also be stopping by for photos on the evening of July 10th. Last week, Adventureland’s Helping Hands Foundation donated $1,000 and a variety of magic tricks to Magic Aid, a nonprofit organization that teaches the children at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital magic. Founded by medical student David Elkin in 2007, Magic Aid helps relieve the stress children experience with hospitalization by performing and teaching magic to young patients. Dedicated to bridging
magic and medicine through the use of magic therapy, David and his team are striving to enhance the quality of care provided to patients, one card trick at a time. Funds were raised through Adventureland Employees’ Water Bottle Recycling Program, and matched by the Helping Hands Foundation. The donation will go towards training other doctors and Magic Aid members sleight of hand, and purchasing
tricks that the children can take home with them. David Elkin stopped by Adventureland last week to show some of the Adventureland staff and the Helping Hands Foundation board members and their families how a little magic can go a long way. Victoria Bonavita was recently honored at the 42nd annual Gracie Awards along with Jane Pauley, who received a Lifetime Achievement Award. The award ceremony took place on June 27th at Cipriani, in Manhattan. It was hosted by Dylan Dreyer from The TODAY Show and featured a musical performance by Kara DioGuardi. The Gracie Awards, named after the late Gracie Allen, were established in 1975 to celebrate broadcasting that demonstrates superior quality and stellar
Mullins, of 1010 WINS radio. When Mullins announced that Victoria was “only thirteen yearsold”, the audience erupted in applause. Victoria was by far the youngest person being honored and it was based on her work between the ages of eleven and twelve. After posing for pictures with Victoria, Jane Pauley, who is one of broadcasting’s most respected journalists said, she was “blown away” by her. And Victoria Bridges, a broadcast producer and director based in the UK posted on her Facebook page saying she was “proud to share the stage with 13 year old content creator Victoria Bonavita.” Victoria said she was very thankful to the Alliance for Women in Media for recognizing her work with a Gracie Award and that it was a huge honor to be in the company of so many inspiring women. She added, “to receive this award along with Jane Pauley was just amazing.”
