Helping You Help Others The Charity of the Month for July is: Rebuilding Together Long Island

he raised up his arms with a big smile and loudly exclaimed “Hello world, I’m here!” I can hear my mom saying “God is good” and I want to add, thank God for good people.” With the support of all of their many volunteers and partners, Rebuilding Together Long Island has become a wellregarded organization, recognized for their work with rehabbing houses, the building and installation of ramps for those in need and their involvement with communities and organizations that span across Long Island. They need your help to keep up the momentum! There are four main ways you can get involved with their organization: 1) Volunteer. They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills, training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection. 2) Sponsor a Project. RTLI allows corporations to sponsor a project so they can see a positive impact on the life of a senior, veteran, disabled person or a family in need. This is a great opportunity team building and a community leadership opportunity for your employees. Why not demonstrate your organization’s commitment to community service and improving the quality of life on Long Island! 3) Attend a Meeting. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month at their office located at 208 Route 109, Suite 204 in Farmingdale at 10 am. 4) Donate. Consider making a donation to their organization. Funding is a continuous requirement to support their efforts. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated. The money you donate stays on Long Island to help our Long Island neighbors! Rebuilding Together Long Island is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with d i s a b i l i t i e s and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. They help Long Island’s economicallydisadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons). RTLI was founded in 1992 by a small group of volunteers that were eager to help needy homeowners. Today they have one paid employee and 200 volunteers, which are the heart and soul of their organization. Their experienced volunteers perform the vast majority of the work they do and they come from all walks of life. This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-up and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk. Seeing improvement in the lives of Long Island residents is truly what makes all the hard-work from this organization worth it. There are countless testimonials from those who have received help from Rebuilding Together Long Island. Recently the organization received a letter of thanks for all their help that was extremely touching. The sender wrote, “I just want to reach out again to thank all involved with the preparation and construction of the ramp for my dad. It has been a sincere pleasure; from the first meeting with Marian and Kathy, to meeting Joe and coming up with the plan, and then witnessing the building process. The crew were all so wonderful and inspiring! I was amazed at how quickly and smoothly it all came together! Not only is the ramp functional, it’s beautiful and brightens up the dark patio! It was a great moment when I first wheeled my father down the driveway, onto the sidewalk, and

Cooking Up Some Friendly Competition As a means of baking delicious treats and gaining real-world financial knowledge along the way, eighth-grade students enrolled in Jenna Schwartz’s Family and Consumer Sciences classes at Babylon Junior-Senior High School recently participated in a fun and educational Food Truck Challenge. For the challenge, each group brainstormed and came up with a company name, along with a signature dish for their food truck. They then completed a business plan
which included the recipe of their signature dish, a menu, a budget, team goals, and a marketing scheme that included a logo, slogan, color scheme and advertising techniques. Once the business plan was complete, they met with their “investor” aka Ms. Schwartz, and pitched their food truck/company idea for approval. With their raw materials at their disposal, the students cooked and baked their signature dish in class and then plated their dish the following day for the
“selling day.” All teachers are invited to the classroom to vote on the best marketing scheme, along with choosing one product to purchase with mock currency. After the sales were made, the students counted their profit and paid back Ms. Schwartz for the initial “money” she invested. It’s a great project, and the students are not only learning so much along the way, but they are having a great time while doing it,” said Ms. Schwartz.

Celebrating Student And Staff Accomplishments The North Babylon Board of Education closed its 2018-2019 school year by celebrating student and staff accomplishments at its June 20 meeting. The district presented certificates to students recognized for their achievements in the Brookhaven National Science Fair. Student members of the Upstander Ambassador initiative were also recognized by the board, Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly and Town of Babylon Councilman Terence McSweeney. Superintendent of Schools Glen Eschbach presented 13 staff members from across
the district for tenure. Mr. Eschbach provided certificates to all recipients and commemorated them for their hard work and commitment to the district and community. “Many things are factored when making tenure recommendations and I can honestly say that each of you have gone above and beyond my expectations and I see a very bright future for not only you but for the students of the North Babylon School District who will benefit from your instruction for years to come,” Mr. Eschbach said. “Congratulations on reaching this point and milestone in your career. I
look forward to our future together and wish you a long and happy career here in the North Babylon School District.” The festivities continued with recognitions of retirees and staff members celebrating their 25th year of service in the district. In addition, district parent John Heegan also received a certificate of appreciation for donating his time, materials and craftmanship to create the trophy cases at the entrance of the North Babylon High School. The district congratulates all who demonstrated hard work and determination throughout the school year.

End-Of-Year Accomplishments The Babylon School District Board of Education recognized several student accomplishments during their meeting on June 24. To begin the evening’s recognitions, the board congratulated Babylon Junior-Senior High School students Madison Baudille and Evan Parise, who
recently represented the district in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association’s 2019 Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The board also recognized three juniorsenior high school students who were met with praise at this year’s Babylon Citizens
Council on the Arts Awards Ceremony for their talents in the fine arts. The district congratulates Sydney Altbacker (Best Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical), Emily Lulley (Best Actress in a Leading Role in a Play) and Dominic Trivigno (Best Actor in a Supporting Role in a Play).

Students Shine At Competition
The Babylon School District commends Babylon Junior-Senior High School students Erin Corcoran and Kate Hannon for participating in the DECA International Career Development Conference, held in Orlando, Florida. Due to their resounding success in the New York DECA State Career Conference held in Rochester earlier this year,
the students, along with adviser and business teacher Claire Reilly, were invited to take part in this year’s prestigious international event. In Orlando, Erin competed in the Hotel and Lodging competitive event, while Kate took part in Restaurant Management. Both students were required to take an exam and participate in two role plays before judges in
their respective categories. Reilly and the students also participated in leadership events and attended opening ceremonies with inspirational guest speakers, a concert featuring Blue Man Group and corporate sponsorship events for internship opportunities. “This was an incredible learning opportunity for our students,” said Reilly.

North Babylon School District is proud to announce that North Babylon High School senior Astrid Bucaro received the Science Teachers Association of New York State Excellence in Science award for her outstanding accomplishments in the subject. She was nominated by AP biology and science research teacher Ms. Annette Kuruc. Her accomplishments include being enrolled in the school’s science research program from grades 10-12, where she
did the majority of her research that focuses on the effects of nicotinamide riboside on the lifespan in Drosophila melanogaster and C. elegans respectively. This past year, she also conducted research in microbiology. She tested the effects of mannose on the growth of Streptococcus salivarius, which has the potential to be beneficial to oral health. This experiment was recognized at the Long Island Science Congress and ranked as Excellence with High Honors.

Bucaro Earns STANYS Excellence In Science Award Astrid plans to continue her research in the fall, where she will attend Stony Brook University as a biology major on a pre-dental track. She will also graduate from North Babylon High School amongst the top 25 in her class as an AP scholar with honors. The district congratulates Astrid on her achievements and wishes her continued success throughout her college career.
PENNY COLLECTION ADDS UP - Dylan Vales, first grader at Tooker Avenue Elementary School in the West Babylon School District, raised and collected $200 to contribute to the school’s Pennies for Patients donation. In March, Tooker Avenue Elementary held its sixth annual Pennies for Patients Fundraiser, led by the fifth grade student council. The fundraiser is part of a national campaign to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The school collected $962.
