Ode To The E Train By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Let me begin by saying that I absolutely love New York City. And by New York City, I mean Manhattan. None of this five boroughs nonsense. The City is one borough, in my estimation. Traveling to it, well that’s another animal entirely. Trains are all well and good, when they’re running on time. Or aren’t derailed by some vague “track condition” west of Jamaica. At rush hour. Of course, this particular scenario occurred during the one time – literally, one and only time – I attempted to commute into Manhattan during the evening rush. Everything was on or close to schedule, until it wasn’t. And then came the crackling,

completely unintelligible announcement over the train’s PA system, mumbling something about “apologize for the inconvenience” and “all passengers must disembark.” My friend and I looked at each other incredulously. This is why we don’t commute to work in the city, seemed to be the simultaneous thought. As we made our way to the exit, passing row upon row of oblivious passengers who apparently hadn’t heard – or comprehended – the command to exit, the mass confusion was evident. Now what? Where do we go? What do we do? Subway. Ugh. Here’s the thing. I am perfectly capable of picking a train line, determining which stop to get off at, which platform to wait on… but
subways? Subways require a special skillset. So many letters and numbers and crisscrossing routes. So much congestion. Almost zero chance to sit, or even lean against, a stationary object. Misery. Pure misery. And so the trek began, from one line (an “express” that made about 12 stops) to another, crammed in like sardines. Oh, the joys of commuting during rush hour. Let’s cross that one off the bucket list. {For those inquiring readers wishing to know the status of Buddy, my betta fish, I am happy to report that he recently celebrated his four-month birthday and is still swimming maniacal laps around his bowl.}

North Babylon High School senior Alyssa Elliot collected more than $4,000 through various fundraising efforts for a brand new North Babylon Bulldog mascot costume. Elliot, a student in the school’s Career Development Program, has been the mascot at various academic and athletic events at and around the school. As the costume became worn out from years of use, she committed herself to raising funds for new Bulldog garb. Some of her fundraising efforts included making appearances at local events and taking mascot photos with patrons as a ‘thank you’ for their donations. Prior to the end of the school year, Elliot used the funds to purchase the new costume, and presented it at the North Babylon School District’s June Board of Education meeting.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone is proud to announce that Suffolk County was the recipient of the 2015 National Association of Counties (NACo) Achievement Award for its Reclaim Our Water Initiative. Reclaim Our Water was launched by County Executive Bellone in 2014 after declaring water quality as his administration’s number one priority. “Water is everything to us on Long Island as not only do we drink the water that is beneath our feet, but it is significant to our local economy, our billion dollar tourism industry, our environment and our quality of life,” said County Executive Bellone. “We are extremely honored to be recognized by NACo as the award signifies the tremendous progress we have made in the last year and a half to reclaim our water. However, this is a problem that will take decades to overcome and will continue to take an overwhelming commitment from all of us in Suffolk County to overcome.” More than 360,000 homes in Suffolk County are not sewered; the unmaintained and outdated septic systems and cesspools on these properties are contributing to nearly 70% of nitrogen pollution in the region’s waterways, including the Great South Bay. The excess nitrogen has caused harmful algal blooms, beach closures, destroyed the oncerenowned shell fishing industry and threatened the region’s ground, surface and drinking water supply. Suffolk County was particularly recognized for the launch of its Single Family Homeowner Septic Demonstration Pilot Program in 2014 where

Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently joined with Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Councilman Tom Donnelly and Councilwoman Jackie Gordon to present the North Babylon Parkdale Civic Association with an honorary citation for their contribution to the community by adopting the Kime Avenue Traffic Roundabout.
The Parkdale Civic Association adopted the roundabout to help improve the traffic around Kime and Greenwood Drive as well as to beautify the area. The spot was adopted by Andrew and Elinor Spadafora, who volunteer for the civic association. The Spadaforas donated plant material, planted colorful flowers and
installed both security cameras and solar lighting at the site. Over 600 tulip and daffodil bulbs were donated by Stables garden center in North Babylon to help spruce up the garden. This project is a fulfillment of one of the civic association’s goals: to improve the community through beautification.

Red Carpet Writers Babylon Elementary School’s first and secondgrade book publishing club members celebrated their writing achievements this June by walking the red carpet and signing copies of their printed books. The club, which met under the direction of school media specialist Teri Polis, worked through the year to learn first hand about the book publishing process and the journey to
become a printed author. Seeking inspiration from Dr. Seuss’ book “If I Ran the Zoo…” the secondgrade students researched animals they would like to see in a zoo and created written and illustrated pieced for a book they called “Our Interesting Zoo.” The first grade students researched a topic of interested to them and created entries for their book “Amazing Fun Facts.”
The students sought inspiration from the school’s subscription based databases, Scholastic’s PebbleGo Animals, Science, Social Studies and Biographies. Proud family members and friends gathered during the celebration to hear excerpts from the two published books and help celebrate the writing advancements the students have made over the year.
