her, from one of those sites which tend to cull such inspirational quotes and sayings. I did attempt to look up the original source, but to no avail; such is the gift and curse of the Internet, I suppose. In any case, whomever thought to put such eloquent words to a concept we all preach but seldom seem to practice – bravo! It is, essentially, just a rewording of the tried and true cliché to appreciate each and every day, to live life to the fullest, to know that “however good or bad a situation is, it will change” (yet another of those “famous” unattributed sayings). But, sometimes, we do need to be reminded. All

As a result of their yearlong fundraising efforts, Babylon School District’s SEPTA aided in the district’s mission to further integrate technology in the classroom by presenting Eileen Ratto with an Apple iPad Mini during their early June meeting. As a special education teacher, Ms. Ratto will utilize the device to enhance the multisensory learning approach currently implemented within her classroom at Babylon Memorial Grade School. In addition to the technology presentation, SEPTA also honored the outstanding educational achievements of one graduating senior during the meeting. The student, who wishes to remain anonymous, was presented with a $500 scholarship based on an essay describing how, with the support of school-related

Across The Curriculums Babylon Memorial Grade School sixthgrade students in Rick Punzone’s class had the chance to expand their understanding of WWI and WWII through a multidisciplinary learning project. Combining their art, technology, library and social studies curriculum, the students participated in an enriching, crosscurricular project under the guidance of each of these area teachers. Building upon what they learned about the wars in their social studies

curriculum, the students researched the time period during library sessions to understand the important role letter writing had in the soldiers’ lives as well as the censorship that took place with messages sent home. After studying the history behind the medal of honor and other distinguished honors bestowed upon soldiers, the students had the chance to create their own medals. Using clay, they sculpted their pieces and inscribed the attributes each one would

honor, as well as selected a corresponding ribbon to distinguish the original pieces. To provide an individual perspective on the material, art teacher Pat Stork shared her family’s story of service during these historical wars. Finally, writing as soldiers, the class penned letters to their family members and took turns censoring the work of their classmates following the protocols that were in place during the time period they were studying.

Top Scholars Babylon High School seniors Daniel Lum and Sara Mikovic have been named the Class of 2014 valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively. Daniel will be attending Stevens Institute of Technology this fall to major in mechanical engineering. Sara will be attending Lafayette College this fall, where she will major in chemical engineering. During his time at Babylon, Daniel has been immersed in extracurricular activities while maintaining his weighted GPA of 104.3. He is the president of

the student council and active member of the class cabinet, National Honor Society, National Science, Spanish and Business and Marketing honor societies and math team. He has been named an Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction and placed on the Principal’s List each year of high school. He is also active in the community, helping to raise money for various organizations, such as JDRF and the Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition. Sara has been an active participant in the science research program and

holds a 103.85 weighted GPA. She earned thirdplace honors during this year’s Long Island Science and Engineering Fair for her original research and is the founding member of the school’s Science Olympiad and Science Club. Sara is also an accomplished musician, secretary of the school’s French and Science National honor societies, as well as a member of the National Honor Society. She volunteers at several local organizations, including as a Sunday school teacher.

Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently joined with members of the Town Board to welcome the newly appointed ambassadors of the Town of Babylon’s Beautification Committee at their first meeting. The committee is made up of residents and

community leaders from across the Town who will help coordinate cleanup and beautification efforts. The goal of the Beautification Committee will be to unite all areas of the Town to help maintain pride in the community by presenting an attractive, litter-free atmosphere for

both residents and visitors. In attendance at the meeting along with Supervisor Schaffer were Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Councilwoman Jacqueline Gordon, Councilman Tom Donnelly and Town Clerk Carol Quirk.

Curriculum Parade

While the school year seems to be speeding toward an end, students at Saints Cyril and Methodius are far from done sharing their love of learning with friends and family. Each grade had an opportunity to showcase the most exciting things they learned throughout this past school year at last week’s SSCM Curriculum Parade. From circus-themed first graders to creative poetry written by older students, spectators were entertained and impressed from start to finish. Third graders invented businesses and shared their wares with the audience in the form of poster boards and props galore. Meanwhile, seventh and eighth graders

provided a demonstration of the small-scale roller coasters they designed and built with their own hands! Fifth grade students had a bevy of earthfriendly ideas to showcase, covering everything from energy conservation to solar and wind-powered housing. And the crowd adored the second graders who came decked out and ready in their spiffy First Holy Communion gear, sharing pictures and scenes from their special day, and reciting a beautiful poem about baby Jesus and the blessed mother, Mary. While it seems so easy for children and teachers alike to “check out” mentally during the final days of June, it was

refreshing to see how engaged and enthusiastic all of the students and staff were after all of the hard work that went into putting together such a lovely day of curriculumsharing as one of the last hurrahs of the school year! With a well-defined and simple approach to the Core Curriculum at SSCM this past year, it’s no small wonder that 100% of SSCM graduating students were accepted to their choice of high schools, as they are year after year. Students felt calm and well-prepared about being tested on the material and parents and teachers alike were proud to see the not one SSCM student felt the need to opt out of the Core Curriculum testing this Spring!
