As I write this column, just two days from the summer solstice, I am inspired by several seasonal thoughts… Weather. That great natural occurrence that has the ability to singlehandedly cancel any plans you may have made, no matter how far in advance, with no regard for reservations, ticket purchases, how many people you may have coordinated with… When Mother Nature is compelled to bless us with a torrential thunderstorm, blizzard, blistering heat or any other, more serious, natural disaster, you can say goodbye to your beach day. Society. We seem to enjoy our solitude, even when we are among several thousand of our closest friends in a
stadium or concert arena. As I mentioned in a previous column, I have tickets to about seven upcoming performances over the next several months. In the three shows I have attended so far, it was amazing to look around at the audience and see the great majority on their cell phones, taking “selfies” with friends, surfing Facebook, Instagram… everything but actually listening to the music. Money well spent. Traffic. Long Island is known for its congestion. While summer may bring a bit of respite in the form of school being out of session and some taking their vacation time elsewhere, this is counteracted by those who migrate en masse to the beaches and parks and pools daily, clogging up every major
artery on the Island. Going back to the summer concert scene, if you plan to attend any shows this summer, you had best be prepared to wait, especially as you attempt to exit. Just imagine about 15 lanes merging into two onto Ocean Parkway. I don’t have to – I’ve experienced it more than my fair share already. It’s not pretty. Let’s hope this summer brings its fair share of sunshine (on weekends, preferably, for those of us who work for a living during the week). And if you happen to be in attendance at a concert in the coming weeks, try putting down the phone for a few minutes, focus on the stage and enjoy the moment. Oh, and try to chill getting out of the parking lot. You’re going to be there awhile.

The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund recognized three graduating seniors from the Walter G. O’Connell High School. This year’s winners were: Chaukim Peters for Track, Gabrielle Clement for Soccer and Carlos Giaraffa for the Writing Component only. Not long after Brittney’s passing, a fund was set up by a family friend to help with costs. This community-donated money was not used for that, but made into a scholarship fund to help those scholars who share characteristics similar to Brittney. The criteria for the scholarships is simple: 1. The scholar is looking
to attend college. 2. The scholar must complete a 250 word essay on “The funniest thing they ever did” or “The funniest thing they have ever seen” 3. Two must participate in high school sports, one from Women’s Track, and one from Women’s Soccer. 4. The third scholarship is offered to a male or female who completes the writing component only. “These students were able to show that they have what it takes to be a high school athlete, but also have a softer side and write about something funny. We also shared a smile. Smiling is one of the most enjoyable and contagious things, and they don’t
come as often anymore, but these helped,” said Brittney’s dad, Tom, at the Senior Awards Ceremony in June. The Brittney Walsh Scholarship Fund has awarded close to $10,000 in the past three years. Brittney’s mom Cheryl has made it “a personal goal to ensure that a minimum award of $2,500 is given annually to help these students’ future, not only to help with college costs, but to help remind them to make smart choices and not to drink and drive.” For more information or on how to donate, visit www.smile14.org.

“Have I left things unfinished?” is something you might ask. I could make a very long list if I were just up to the task. There are cobwebs in the corners, multiplying as we speak. Where is the calm serenity at home for which I seek?

I picture my house nicely decorated and in my mind “just so.” But to tell the truth, it’s nowhere near; I still have miles to go. My counters and tables are cluttered, I should just put everything away; But some things have no place to go, so in the way they stay. I empty all the closets in an attempt to make it neat, But then I get real tired and I need to take a seat. All the dust has made me stuffy, and so I find it hard to work. I’ve decided it’s my family’s fault as I slowly go berserk.

They have to clean this with me; after all, they live here too. They say that they will help me, and they swear to me it’s true. They’ll get to it eventually: “Calm down, Mom, you’ll see.” “We’ll get it all straightened out - neat as it can be.” I go get bags and boxes and open all the drawers; As I start to go through each thing, I find it gives me pause. Memories are now unlocked, and my mind just wanders to the past. What happened to my great resolve to purge this house at last? I now feel very tired, and I think I’ll go to bed; But then I see my bed is strewn with piles of clothes instead. What happened to the promises that I swore I’d keep? I’ll get to it tomorrow, but I have piles to move before I sleep!

Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey recently had the opportunity to attend the awards presentation at the 26th Annual BACCA Juried Art Show, which was held at the Old Town Hall. The event was widely attended not only by the participating artists, but by the greater community of art enthusiasts as well. This particular art exhibition involved a variety of mediums including oils, acrylics, portraits, mixed media, drawing, watercolors, and pastels. All of the pieces were elegantly displayed throughout the Old Town Hall, providing a first rate viewing experience. Additionally, many of the artists and BACCA board members were on hand to answer questions and provide insightful interpretive guidance. “Babylon Village and the surrounding communities are truly chock-full of

Babylon High School students in Christopher Ryan’s Advanced Placement U.S. History class had the chance to speak with a political leader about current events when they were selected to take part in a special taping of Cablevision’s “Meet the Leaders at School” television series.
During the event, the students engaged in a question and answer session with Congressman Peter King and observed his interview with show host Patrick Halpin. The topics of the discussion surrounded the 9/11 terrorist attacks, including the aftermath, role of government officials

Teacher Appreciation Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory hosted a Teacher Appreciation Awards Night on Monday, June 1st, at the North Babylon High School. Every day in schools across Suffolk County, teachers touch the lives of thousands of children. However, a teacher’s work and impact reaches far beyond the boundaries of the classroom. From
grading papers, to preparing special activities, to meeting with parents, teachers spend countless hours ensuring their students’ success. Presiding Officer Gregory felt these teachers who go above and beyond should be recognized and encouraged, and reached out to schools in the 15th legislative district in search of these extraordinary educators. With his boat, docked in Lindenhurst, he is volunteering his spare time to take children with disabilities (along with a parent or guardian) or disabled veterans on fishing, snorkeling and boating trips in the Great South Bay.
