(and nearly two thirds of my life before that) that used to be me up on stage, decked out in full costume, makeup, hair… the whole deal. (Oh, and glitter. Can’t forget glitter.) As with any transition, it is often met with mixed emotions – that sense of knowing when the time has come to move on, yet sadness that you will be leaving your comfort zone of people and places and things you have grown to expect as part of your life. Time does move on, things do change; and, in the end, you eventually grow used to the sometimes subtle, sometimes drastic alterations

graduations, with changes in residence or job – everything requires a period of adjustment. And then, without realizing it, there comes a day when you take a step back and realize that this has become the new norm. So here’s to that new norm, to sitting in the audience and being able to truly appreciate all the hard work and dedication that has gone into creating the spectacle before me. And if – no, when – I become nostalgic for my own time in the spotlight, I will call upon the 20 years of fond memories I was fortunate to be a part of... and smile.

As I write this column, this coming weekend will mark the first dance recital in nearly 20 years at my studio that I will not be a part of. At the North Babylon School District Board of Education’s May 28th meeting, the Board voted to submit the same budget of $112,010,068 to the community for a second vote on Tuesday, June 18th. By law, a 60 percent supermajority is required for approval. A Review Of Response The current school year represents the first year that school districts in New York were required by the state to follow the procedures for Response to Intervention (RtI). RtI is an intervention program that supports students who are struggling academically or behaviorally. The National Center on RtI

states that with RtI, schools identify students at risk for poor learning outcomes, monitor student progress, provide evidence-based interventions and adjust the intensity and nature of those interventions depending on a student’s responsiveness, as well as identify students with learning disabilities or

other disabilities. The West Babylon School District has been following the required procedures for RtI for several years prior to the mandatory implementation. Administrators and teachers meet throughout each school year to review procedures and analyze data to ensure best

practices for instruction. The district’s RtI program allows for all kindergarten through fifth-grade students to be benchmarked in both reading and math three times annually using the STAR Renaissance online assessment program. Results from each administration of this assessment are analyzed

by the building principals and teachers and are used to help determine whether additional remediation is necessary. Classroom teachers, reading specialists, math specialists, ESL teachers and special education teachers use the testing information to further differentiate instruction to meet the specific needs

of each student. Students who receive additional services in math and/ or reading have their progress monitored regularly to determine if the instruction delivered is helping him or her improve. When necessary, strategies are altered to meet the needs of each student.

“Your Gildersleeve is my Roger” the words were barely audible through tears and cries of Roger’s name. After having been missing for more than a year from Lindenhurst and turning up on Route 110 in Amityville, Roger, an almost 11 year-old cat was on his way home thanks to a little good fortune and the help of South Bay’s Neighbor Pet’s Place. Charlene Brass recognized her long lost cat’s photo in the April 16th

issue of the paper the day the Babylon Shelter photo was published. This photo was definitely her cat, Roger, who had disappeared in March 2012. Charlene looked for Roger for months and visited the shelter several times searching for him. Lost pet reunions like this, especially cat reunions, only happen once or twice a year; yet, each time one does, it reminds distraught owners never to give up hope.

The group’s mission is to raise public awareness of ALS, help researchers find a cure, support ALS patients and their families, and provide the ALS community with the latest ALSrelated news, information and inspiration. The organization’s annual ride is an event where ALS patients ride their power wheelchairs along the highways across Long Island to Manhattan. With the help of their teacher Lisa Brush, the school’s students coordinated fundraisers to raise funds for this worthy cause, which when combined with the donation collected during the faculty- and stafforganized “Dress Down Day,” totaled more than $600. To show their appreciation for the school’s support, Mr. Pendergast and the rest of the Ride for Life participants rode past Babylon Junior-Senior High School during this year’s annual ride. Lining the streets around the high school, students and faculty members cheered on the riders and showed support for their mission by holding colorful signs filled with inspirational messages. As the riders approached the high school, music teacher Charles Leech played the drums with students Jimmy Navarra and Sean Reis, and technology teacher Peter Manke’s Digital Video Editing class captured the momentous event. A group of 30 seniors from Ms. Brush’s child psychology classes, along with their teacher and Principal Al Cirone, walked with the ride and escorted Mr. Pendergast through the village and into Argyle Park, all while chanting to raise awareness.
