In addition to their performances, the groups also received a tour of the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum and dined at the Hard Rock Café. They then received a backstage tour of Radio City Music Hall and traveled in a futuristic sky shuttle elevator at the Top of the Rock.

Tickets Anyone? By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Summer concert season is upon us! I have to admit, I went a little ticket crazy this time around. The instant the Jones Beach schedule was posted, I eagerly scanned it for shows I wanted to see, and then scoured the internet for any special pre-sales, Groupons, etc. that I could find. The problem – well, a temporary inconvenience, as the case may be – is that some summer tours seem to be announced earlier each year and, while there are plenty eager to attend, few people are willing, or able, to commit to such expenses in the middle of Christmas shopping. Me, I ignore such … what’s the word … logic? Rather, I
am of the philosophy that, if you want to do something badly enough, why should you wait for tickets to be sold out and appear on resale sites for triple the price? Spontaneity is key – just press that “purchase” button and worry about minor details like cost and finding a concert companion later! Of course, needless to say, after realizing that I had accumulated tickets to about seven or eight shows over these next several months, I began to panic. Slightly. Trying to remember who likes what types of music, the corresponding dates, times, locations, the cost factor … it’s a bit like being an event planner, desperately trying to fill each slot appropriately. The ultimate
goal, of course, is to not find myself solo the day of the show, contemplating a.) going by myself, b.) attempting to resell the tickets, or c.) worst of all, losing the money laid out and not going at all. A truly lose/lose situation. By the time you read this, I will have attended concert number one (guest confirmed, tickets paid in full), with numbers two and three to follow shortly in the coming week. A bit of overkill, I know. But that’s what summer is all about – enjoying the great outdoors with family and friends, taking in some music, film, culture … whatever the case may be. This is what we look forward to all year. Let’s not forget to savor it now that it’s arrived.

North Babylon’s Boy Scout Troop 399 scouts and leaders were present at West Islip’s Cub Scouts Pack 279 Bridging Ceremony. They welcomed Danny Mallimo as he crossed over to Boy Scouts Troop 399 where his older brother, Bobby Mallimo, is a Life Scout. This special celebration took place at Beach Street
Middle School in West Islip on March 27th. Boy Scout Troop 399 meetings are held each Thursday evening that schools are open at 7:30 p.m. in the Marion G. Vedder Elementary School cafeteria. Anthony Covelli, Jr., of North Babylon’s Troop 399 became the Troop’s 48th Eagle Scout! Anthony earned more than the 21 merit badges required to receive the Eagle Scout award. For his final project he constructed a paver walkway leading to the newly renovated restrooms at North Babylon High School. This walkway gives sporting spectators access to restrooms from the outside of the building. An Eagle Scout Court of Honor Ceremony honoring Anthony took place on Sunday, April 19th, in the auditorium of the North Babylon High School. Family, friends and local dignitaries were on hand to witness and celebrate this distinguished
achievement. During his speech Anthony was quoted as saying, “I would like to thank all of my fellow scouts, dedicated adult leaders, and everyone else who has helped me on my journey to Eagle Scout. Thank you to all of the local businesses who donated to my project. Now that I have completed this epic event in my life, in the future I can not only say I was a Boy Scout but that I am an Eagle Scout.” One of the highlights was when Councilwoman Jacqueline Gordon presented Anthony with a Proclamation from the Town of Babylon declaring April 20th, be Anthony Covelli, Jr. Day in the Town of Babylon. Fox is one of 30 high school actresses nominated for the award, which was open to all public and private high schools located in Brooklyn, Bronx,
Long Island, Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island and Westchester. She has the opportunity to represent the New York metro area in the National High School Musical Theater Awards in June following a five-day musical theatre-intensive held at New York University Tisch School of the Arts Studio on Broadway. As a nominee, Fox will participate in a day-
long audition led by a team of experienced Broadway coaches who direct students through a rehearsal and presentation of an original musical theater production number. She will follow the number up with a talent showcase featuring the performance of a solo song she performed in Mame.
Kids Who Code Preparing students for the 21st Century is an important goal in the West Babylon School District, as seen in a recent South Bay Elementary School technology directive. Half of the student population signed up to participate in
The Hour of Code, a before school enrichment activity run by School Media Specialist Kara Levy. The Hour of Code is also a worldwide initiative to promote interest in the computer sciences, specifically girls, as there
is a gender gap in the field. More than 150 students in grades K-5 are now more familiar with computer programming, a skill they will utilize through lifelong learning.

Butterfly Man First-grade students at JFK Elementary School in West Babylon received a personal account of tropical rain forest adventures from butterfly collector Steve Fratello, who shared his
rare and varied collection of butterflies and moths. Fratello educated the students on the differences between butterflies and moths and how these beautiful creatures adapt
to their environment through mimicry and camouflage. He also shared photographs and illustrations of rainforests in Ecuador, Guyana, Peru and more.

Babylon Memorial Grade School’s fifth- and sixthgrade national current events teams once again secured top placement as they competed in the National Current Events Olympiad. The sixth-grade team finished third in the nation and the fifth-grade
team finished first in the nation. Additionally, two members of the fifth-grade team received individual accolades as well. Derek Huluhan finished first and Kevin Mroczka finished second overall nationally. The National Current Events Olympiad consists of four meets with
owl pellets. With the help of teachers Holly Massmann and Frank Riviezzo, parents and guardians, the West Babylon students were able to dissect the owl pellets to
uncover skeletal remains, which were pieced together to figure out exactly what had been consumed. The class learned that owls eat frogs after piecing together a frog skeleton.

Kyle Wykert of North Babylon’s Troop 399 passed his Board of Review to become the Troop’s 50th Eagle Scout! A Board of Review is the final approval process for Eagle Scout. Kyle achieved more than 21 merit badges required to receive the Eagle Scout award. For his Eagle project he supervised the construction of benches, tables and flower boxes to go under the gazebo in the courtyard of Belmont
Elementary School located in North Babylon. Faculty and students can now enjoy a class in an outdoor setting. The project was mainly successful because of teamwork. Boy Scout Troop 399 meetings are held each Thursday evening that schools are open at 7:30 p.m. in the Marion G. Vedder Elementary School cafeteria. Fitness & Fun
Last Friday’s Field Day was all about fitness and fun for students at Saints Cyril and Methodius elementary school. In spite of the break from the heat, students from nursery school through eighth grade were sweating it up as they tested their skills in traditional sports like basketball, soccer, and volleyball. Meanwhile, the real
laughs and excitement came during the more unique activities, such as the wet sponge relay and the wacky obstacle course games! Perhaps more importantly, teachers at every level celebrated Team Spirit for their own teams AND good sportsmanship as the central focus of the day. Whether it was Team Blue or Team White that
rose to victory, there was celebration all around as the students cheered their classmates and ended the day with excellent treats from Kona Ices! Heartfelt thanks to all of the parents, teachers and staff who worked so hard to make this a marvelously memorable day for every student!

and services such as meal delivery programs, transportation options, home modification assistance and inhome support services. Additionally, caregivers can find out about support groups in their community and programs that offer a break from caregiving responsibilities. The St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School Performing Arts Department brought more than 160 members to compete against more than 25 other ensembles in the Music in the Parks Festival at Hershey Park in Pennsylvania. Each ensemble worked throughout the year to prepare a number of pieces that they performed in front of seasoned judges on May 15th. As the judges read their evaluations it became clear that this would be a banner day for SJB. The day included five first place finishes and four ratings of superior, the highest rating. They worked so diligently and were then able to unwind and have fun together.” To finish their week each ensemble performed to a packed Dunne Auditorium with an eager audience for the Spring Instrumental and Vocal Concerts. Donohue concluded, “It’s really been a banner year. To have so many All-State and All-County award recipients, carry the day at this competition, and play to a full auditorium is a true testament to the quality and growth of our program.”

Scholarship Recipients The Long Island-based credit union NEFCU has awarded 82 students from high schools across Long Island each with a $500 voucher to use toward their college education, as part of its annual Making a Difference Scholarship program. In total, NEFCU granted $41,000 to graduating seniors from local high schools across Long Island. The individual winners will be announced
in June at their respective high school’s scholarship award ceremonies. Each participating high school’s guidance department selected one graduating senior of its choice based on a minimum four-year average of 90%, as well as service to his or her community and school. Since the Making a Difference Scholarship program’s inception more than 10 years ago, NEFCU
has awarded more than $1,000,000 to Long Island high school and college students. In addition to meeting the academic qualifications and outstanding service to both their school and their community, each student must attend a two- or four-year college or university after graduating this spring. Winners of the Making a Difference High School
Scholarship are eligible to apply for NEFCU’s Premier Making a Difference Scholarship, a $20,000 scholarship (paid over four years) offered to recipients of NEFCU’s High School and Family Scholarships to help fund their college education. NEFCU also offers several other scholarships for undergraduate and graduate college students. “Promoting higher education is such an
important part of our community outreach, and it gives us such great pride to help so many local Long Island students achieve this goal,” said Valerie Garguilo, vice president of marketing and community relations for NEFCU. “Our Making a Difference Scholarship program is a great way for us to foster college education and reward those deserving students who have worked so hard
in school.” This year’s applications were open to nearly all Long Island high schools. Out of the 82 participating high schools, 23 are located in Suffolk County and 59 are located in Nassau County.
