This past Memorial Day weekend, the Navy’s Blue Angels returned to the Island for their annual turn as one of the Jones Beach Air Show’s featured attractions. Even though it’s just a short drive down Ocean Parkway, my family and I have never managed to get out there to witness the spectacle up close and in person. Too much traffic, too many people, too much of a hassle… This year, though, I realized that the planes would be practicing right around the corner at Republic Airport during the week leading up to the show. And so, on Friday afternoon, a friend and I made a point of taking a ride down to the Airport Plaza shopping center to see if we could catch a glimpse. A glimpse? Try witnessing all six of the planes whizzing overhead and whoknows-what speed, close enough so that we could read the numbers on them! What a sight!

If only I had my camera, I thought. Well, after that close call, I decided to make it my mission to get a shot of them ﬂying to or from the air show over the weekend, since I knew they would cross over my house on their ﬂight down to the beach. Saturday afternoon, as I heard them approach, I ran out with my camera – only to catch the cloud of dust they had left in their wake. Okay, I thought, I’ll just wait here on the deck – listening to the simulcast on the radio – until I hear them wrapping up their routine. Then, all I have to do is aim my camera for the sky and I can’t miss them! Easier said than done. I saw them coming, all right. The problem was it’s a little hard to frame something moving at hundreds of miles an hour in your camera lens before it’s passed you by. I managed to snap one shot as they approached, which, after the camera’s natural delay, resulted in a rather fuzzy shot of the planes whizzing right out of the frame. There’s always tomorrow, I thought. The next morning, I drove

down to the local town beach and waited, poised for the approach. Sure enough, I saw the HC-130 slowly making its way south, a sure sign that the six Blue Angels were not far behind. And then… out of the clouds they came – all six, flying in perfect formation. And again, I was only able to get just one shot before I lost track of the formation. I followed their flight into the distance, where I was actually able to view most of the theatrics which followed, albeit from a great distance. I imagine it was much better up close, but hey – not a bad seat on my beach either! I must have stood there for a solid 30 minutes, watching the back and forth, up and down, looping motion of the jets, until at last, they began their return trip to Republic. This time, I got it. One...two… three shots as they came closer and closer – still a little blurred, but sharp against the clear blue sky. Finally! As they flew off into the distance, I heard one bystander mumble, “There they go – our tax dollars at work.” But she was smiling.

Belmont Ball Fifth-graders at Belmont Elementary School in the North Babylon School District are becoming dignified ladies and gentlemen by participating in the Dancing Classrooms: Transforming Lives One Step at a Time program. Over the course of 10 weeks and 20 lessons, the students are taking part in interactive lessons about the history and

cultures of the merengue, foxtrot, rumba, tango, swing and waltz. On the 20th lesson, students will dress elegantly to present a culmination of all they have learned in a ballroom performance. The program, hosted by affiliate organization CoDanceCo, home of Dancing Classrooms Long Island, is led in collaboration with students’ teachers and an

instructor from the dance group. By learning about the origins and proper application of steps in each dance, students are fostering the virtues of respect, teamwork, confidence and politeness. Using just cardboard and duct tape, 16 teams of students were challenged to design and engineer a boat that could sail two people across the length of the ﬂoating dock in the Gilgo Beach Marina. After weeks of applying their design and engineering skills, students took their

completed boats to the dock on May 26th for race day. Two students paddled inside their boats and did their best to stay aﬂoat. Those with the fastest times, best design, most school spirit and best “sinking” were recognized with cardboard trophies.

With his boat, docked in Lindenhurst, he is volunteering his spare time to take children with disabilities (along with a parent or guardian) or disabled veterans on fishing, snorkeling and boating trips in the Great South Bay.

Maria DelVecchio’s business students at North Babylon High School completed the Suffolk Federal Scholars program, an engaging and interactive online education curriculum, and were awarded certificates to recognize their achievements. The students were joined by President and CEO of Suffolk Federal Credit Union William O’Brien, Superintendent of North Babylon School District Glen Eschbach,

North Babylon High School Principal Jonathan Klomp, Assistant Principal Stephanie Hasandras, Ms. DelVecchio and distinguished guests in attendance. Earlier in the spring, students in Ms. DelVecchio’s College Accounting and Business Law class received a visit from the vice president of marketing of the SFCU. The students, who are part of the University in the High School program at North Babylon and

may elect to take classes for college credit, were prepared with college and career questions. They then engaged in conversation about Mr. O’Brien’s inspiring ascent to president of SFCU, and they learned that they, too, are capable of an equally remarkable rise to success. Suffolk Scholars Suffolk Federal recently honored North Babylon High School students who completed the Suffolk Federal Scholars Program, a web-based education program which supports financial education at schools throughout Suffolk County. Suffolk Federal partners with EverFi, Inc. to bring this interactive financial management program to participating local high school students at no cost to the schools or taxpayers. The students received certificates during an exciting ceremony at the high school. “These students are our future generation. The more we can do to help them grow and prosper, the more our country will benefit,” explained William J. O’Brien, Suffolk Federal’s President and CEO. “Suffolk Federal is proud to partner with EverFi to bring financial education to local students, to prepare each one of them for a sound financial future and to shine a light on the importance of financial literacy.” The 10-unit course includes over six hours of programming covering
