In September of 2007, Congress designated the first week in June as National CPR & AED Awareness Week. This year, the week falls from June 1st-7th. The week highlights how lives can be saved when more people know CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and how to use an AED (Automated External Defibrillator). The American Heart Association (AHA) urges the public to be prepared for cardiac emergencies, and for good reason. Plain and simple, CPR when started immediately in an emergency situation, saves lives. Each year over 400,000 people die from Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). Over 80 percent of these emergencies occur in the home. Unfortunately many bystanders do not initiate CPR, possibly because they do not want to get involved, or possibly because they do not know what to do. More than 92 percent of cardiac arrest victims do not survive to

The Gift of Time By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Time. It’s the one thing we never seem to have quite enough of. There is always a deadline, a constant reminder of what we have yet to accomplish within a given period. From the moment we are born, there is a schedule to follow, a time frame to adhere to, expectations to be met – rarely a moment of peace. From classroom bell schedules and term paper due dates to newspaper and magazine press schedules, my life has pretty much been one giant revolving deadline from kindergarten on
up. And, while generally on time for such things, my reluctance to be a “morning person,” coupled with a (slightly) over-the-top sense of perfectionism, occasionally creates obstacles, self-imposed as they may be. Sometimes, you just need to take a collective deep breath and let things go. Choose your battles wisely; smile and accept the rest. It’s not giving up. It’s not even giving in. It’s simply making a conscious decision to rise above with an eye on the greater goal, whatever that may be. It’s not always easy. And
for those like me who tend to micromanage and overanalyze, it can be nearly impossible to let go and relinquish control of the day-today monotonies which, together, make up the great majority of life. But once you set the wheels in motion, it’s amazing how truly freeing it is. Simply live and let live. We can only control ourselves; not others, not our surroundings. The sooner we realize this and stop trying, the better. At the end of the day, you might even find you have more time to do the things you truly want to. Imagine that.

Babylon Town Councilman Tom Donnelly recently met with a group of students from North Babylon High School who made a difference in their community by cleaning up Phelps Lane Park in North Babylon as part of a Global Youth Service Day project. Councilman Donnelly thanked the students for their participation and dedication to keeping our parks clean and beautiful. The students were treated to a history lesson about the Phelps Lane family and the mansion by Kelly Filippone, Town of

Past projects have included helping non-profit organizations through food drives and monetary donations, collecting food for the needy, visiting local senior citizens centers, making holiday baskets for hospitalized children, conducting community clean-up efforts and assisting local veterans groups in need. Students at Marion G. Vedder Elementary School in the North Babylon School District honored important people in their lives with a medley of choral performances on Special Person’s Day. The annual event’s theme for 2015 was “Broadway Musicals,” and featured students singing songs from popular theatrical shows. Students

On Monday, June 15th, the American Heart Association will be hosting its 27th Annual Golf Classic-A Joel Hamroff Memorial Tribute at the Meadow Brook Club in Jericho. Event Chair Harry Armon, ARCAP Partners, LLC and Event Vice-Chair, Steven Yanofsky, Parts Authority, Inc., along with the corporate and community leadership of Long Island will be participating to increase awareness of the importance of physical activity. Along the banks of the lagoon wreathed with arrowhead, spiker rush, pickerel weed and giant bullrush, I rest with book in hand and ponder my placid environs.

A pair of black birds sporting roseate heads, chalk-like lines on sooty wings and tail, yellow beaks and three large frontal talons, beheld moments ago maneuvering and bouncing in the water, now on land pecking at the grass like chickens. A striking zebra long-wing butterfly propels about sea daisies and flyweed, flowers attracted to its scent. One observes billowy white and grey clouds set on a backdrop of light blue sky. This serene, halcyon atmosphere mingled with refreshing breezes account for the therapeutic elixir, easing the tensions and stresses of the day. All this augments happiness and contentment in life and emphasizes the sentiment that “Life Is Extraordinary.”

Exploratory scientific learning is starting early at Babylon Elementary School as students are engaging in inquiry based, hands-on projects within the building’s new science lab. The space, which was previously occupied by a class, was transformed this
winter with the guidance of first-grade teacher Bernadette Forthmuller and the PTA. While open to all grade levels, the first-grade teachers are collaborating regularly to plan experiments tied to enhance classroom curriculum and challenge students to build upon
their critical thinking skills. Recent projects had students explore properties of matter and observe and research hermit crabs. Experiments often integrate technology and afford the students the opportunity to use the lab’s Google Chromebooks.
FBI Program Qualifier Margaret McKeever, a freshman at North Babylon High School in the North Babylon School District, has been selected to attend a Youth Leadership Program hosted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy Associates (FBINAA), a premier law enforcement training agency. The FBINAA hosts its prestigious weeklong program annually.
McKeever is one of just two students selected within the New York Eastern Canada chapter, and one of only 60 selected worldwide. There are a number of criteria McKeever needed to meet in order to qualify: the program is open to students 14-16 years old, who have demonstrated high academic standards and good citizenship, and who are of high moral character. The student must also be nominated

by a FBINAA graduate in good standing. McKeever interviewed with chapter representatives and a selection committee before the FBINAA and program coordinator decided to offer her the opportunity of a lifetime. McKeever will attend the 17th session of the FBINAA Youth Leadership Program on June 13th-20th in Quantico, Virginia.

Nominated For Award will travel to Chelsea Studios in New York City to participate in a daylong audition by a team of Broadway coaches, who will direct the nominees through a rehearsal and presentation of an original musical theater production number. A student talent showcase, which features each student actor singing a solo of a song performed in his or her high school musical, follows the ensemble performance. A panel of industry professionals will then select two Gershwin Award winners, Best Leading Actor/Actress in a Musical, who will represent the New York metro area in
the National High School Musical Theater Awards, held at the Minskoff Theatre on June 29th, following an all-expenses paid five-day musical theater intensive workshop held at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts Studio on Broadway. During the 20142015 school year, Alexa was designated as a Nassau Music Educators Association All-County vocalist and a New York State School Music Association All-State vocalist for the women’s chorus. In addition, she played the leading role of Dorothy in the “Wizard of Oz.”

Science Initiative As part of a new initiative, elementary school students in the North Babylon School District are working with their counterparts at North Babylon High School to enhance their scientific knowledge.
As part of the program, fifth-graders at each of the district’s five elementary schools visit the high school with their classes to work with the elder students on scientific projects and experiments, such as those conducted in
chemistry lab. The initiative is designed to give the high school students an opportunity to serve as tutors to supplement the fifthgraders’ classroom lessons.

Stepping Out For A Cure The Scleroderma Foundation/Tri-State, Inc. Chapter will hold the 12th Annual Stepping Out To Cure Scleroderma Long Island Walk in Wantagh Park on Sunday, June 7th. Registration and check-in start at 9 a.m. and the walk on the one mile course begins at 10:30 a.m. Join Long Island walk leaders Barbara Geller, Melissa Coppola, Dawn Selg, along with patients, families, and friends for a lively and fun event that raises money for support services and research. The walk helps bring awareness of scleroderma, an autoimmune disease that affects the body’s connective tissue impacting an estimated 30,000 men, women, and children in the Tri-State
area – for which there is no known cause and no cure. Food, raffles, and entertainment round out a great day at the park! Participants can register to walk or sponsor a walker online at http://walks. S c l e r o d e r m a Tr i S t a t e . org before the event. The pre-walk registration fee is $20 for participants 16 years and older, $5 for children ages 5 to 15, and children under five are free. HONORING HEROES - Students from Saints Cyril and Methodius Elementary School marched in Deer Park’s Memorial Day Parade, organized by the Edward K. Peisker Veterans of Foreign War Post No. 5348 in Deer Park. The weather made for a perfect day, filled with memorials of our fallen heroes.
