The Saga of Squeegee By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Beautiful turquoise betta seeking small, non-disruptive companion to cohabitate within fully equipped tank. Must be able to vacuum gravel and plant surfaces; windows a plus. So, some of you may be wondering how my new pal Squeegee the Snail fared. In short, not well. His stay was brief – less than a week, in fact – and quite unsuccessful. While I may have played a role in his untimely demise, I must say he didn’t seem very lively upon arrival. No matter how many times I tried to greet him {read: head-butted his shell repeatedly}, he never seemed to want to come out and play.

While disappointing, it wasn’t until my Human began depositing small “cookies” (algae wafers) into the tank for Squeegee to consume that my irritation set in. Why should this bizarre-looking golden shell of a creature have an even better menu to choose from than me? Here I was, forced to suck down my bland betta pellets, while HE had a giant wafer to inhale. Well, of course I couldn’t handle such a slight, and so, as soon as my Human would leave the room, I would knock Squeegee upside down and drag his cookie to the other side of the tank, where I would happily munch away at it. I think my Human was upset by this, as she kept muttering something about “crumbs” and what a mess I was making.

Isn’t that what the purpose of this stupid snail was to begin with? In any case, after four or five days, Squeegee stopped poking his head out of his shell entirely. Maybe it was starvation, since I did consume all his cookies. Maybe it was the concussion I gave him upon initially welcoming him to my abode. Maybe he wasn’t the healthiest snail in the tank to begin with. Whatever the reason, my companion was removed by the Human, with admonitions to “behave” and comments that I was a “little brat” who “couldn’t get along with anyone.” Well, fine then. Cancel the rental notice. This betta prefers to fly solo! Maybe I can still get a couple of those cookies to go though?

Faculty and staff dressed in orange and black, held up their signs of support as they celebrated the arrival of the ALS Ride for Life team when they stopped at Babylon Memorial Grade School and Babylon Junior-Senior High School on May 17th. The 19th annual Ride for Life, led by Christopher Pendergast, occurs each May to celebrate National ALS Awareness Month. Beginning in Riverhead on May 9th, Pendergast and his team spend 12 days traveling across Long Island and into Manhattan to raise awareness about amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or Lou Gehrig’s disease. This annual event encourages students to take action in the face of adversity. At Babylon Memorial Grade School, students raised money with a walkathon and “Put ALS to Sleep” pajama day. Together with Babylon JuniorSenior High School, the district raised more than $1,000 to support families who are afflicted with this debilitating disease.

Thirteen West Babylon School District students were recognized at the 11th annual Suffolk Zone of New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance elementary and middle school Physical Education Student Leadership Award ceremony at Longwood Middle School on May 4th.
