Raising Awareness
or the ninth consecutive year, the students and staff at North Babylon High School set out to raise awareness and money to cure the powerful and fatal disease called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly referred to as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease. Organized by the high school’s Leader Club and its adviser Patricia Szlosek, the high school hosted a morning send-off for Chris Pendergast and Ride for Life.

Four West Babylon Senior High School art students were recently recognized for their photographs in the 4th Annual Youth Showcase Photo Competition sponsored by the Photographic Federation of Long Island. The competition was held at the Ethical Humanist Society in Garden City and showcased students’ works from a total of 13 high schools. With over 100 entries submitted, it was an honor that seniors Josh Woolley and Joseph Meighan won first place in their categories. Josh won in the category of Architecture and Joseph in Photographer’s Choice. Taking second place were senior Kerrin Toner in Architecture and junior Ryan Harinski in Creative.

Tis the season for proms and pictures and graduations, for final summer vacations with friends and future college and career plans … and even though I am well past that point in my life, this time of year always makes me a bit nostalgic. As I watch students I taught in dancing for years and younger siblings of friends set off on these great adventures,
I can’t help but think back to when it was all fresh and new to me (and feel just a little old!). Upon reflection, I think the one regret most people share is that we – as a collective class – did not take the time to savor the moments quite as much as we would have liked to. Sure, there are pictures and newspaper clippings and all sorts of mementos … but the treasured memories – those are the priceless artifacts that mean the most. Unfortunately, they also tend to fade over time. Me, I still look at my yearbook from time to time, smiling at all the nice compliments and inside jokes which fill the pages from friends, family and faculty members. I still carry a walletsized picture from my prom at Windows On The World – yes, I
still carry photos in my wallet – which has obviously become even more priceless to me given the events which transpired on September 11th. Did I enjoy every minute while it was happening? Somewhat, but probably not to the degree I should have. Unfortunately, we were all consumed with college and scholarship applications, finals and AP exams, term papers and preparing for graduation. The actual experience – the only part which truly matters in the long run – tended to get lost in the shuffle. So to this year’s graduates … try, really try, to slow down, stop and savor … These are the days to remember. These are the moments to treasure.

Three students from Wilson Tech have been selected for the prestigious LIFT (Long Island Forum for Technology) scholarships. The awards, valued at up to $5,000 per year (for up to two years) for tuition to further their education and training on Long Island were presented to Yander Reyes of Wyandanch in Aircraft Technology, Jose Yanez of Copiague in Automotive Technology and Luis Sanchez of Amityville in Aircraft Technology by Joseph Garone, the chairman of the LIFT
Board. LIFT hosted a luncheon to recognize the three recipients and their families for the students’ outstanding achievements in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) field. Yander and Luis plans to use their scholarships to earn their second FAA licenses in the BOCES Aviation Maintenance Technology program for adults at Republic Airport. Jose plans to use his scholarship to continue his automotive studies at Suffolk County Community College.
The LIFT competition was open to high school students pursuing a career and technical education at any of the three BOCES on Long Island. For this initial year, the LIFT scholarships were aimed at graduating seniors who were planning on continuing their education in a manufacturing-related program local to Long Island. Five months of preparation, research and practice with our attorney advisor came down to these four words. Victory was sweet indeed! The SSCM Mock Trial Team, an Enrichment Offering, was one of fourteen schools to participate in the Eleventh Annual Catholic Middle School Mock Trial Program which was held on Saturday, May 18th, at St. John’s University School of Law. Over four hundred people listened as Dean Michael Simmons spoke of the invaluable educational opportunity that mock trial programs provide to students. Dean Simmons iterated how these students learn about our legal system, develop analytical and reasoning
skills, practice public speaking and build selfconfidence. The SSCM Team defended the accused in this year’s criminal assault case. In the course of the trial, our three defense witnesses testified with their narratives, adding weight to the strategy that the District Attorney had not proven his case “beyond a reasonable doubt.” And so it went thinking and problemsolving, interpersonal and collaborative skills, selfdirection and hard work all came together in that SJU courtroom. Every month, the students of Santapogue Elementary School in the West Babylon Union Free School District reflect on a new character trait in support of their Bucket Filling Character Education program. During the month of May, students explored kindness.
Every student had the opportunity to take part in a unique project that resulted in a visual reminder of the importance of being kind. Throughout the month, teacher Cara Kerr led the character education committee’s Kindness Flower initiative, in which students decorated “kindness
flowers” with inspirational messages of how to be kind and why doing so is important. During their recess periods, members of the Santapogue student council worked with Mrs. Kerr to hang the flowers, creating a display in the lobby that promotes kindness throughout the school.
For the ninth consecutive year, the students and staff at North Babylon High School set out to raise awareness and money to cure the powerful and fatal disease called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly referred to as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease. Organized by the high school’s Leader Club and its adviser Patricia Szlosek, the high school hosted a breakfast and morning send-off for Chris Pendergast and his organization Ride for Life on May 15th. The Ride for Life campaign is a nonprofit run by ALS patients and caregivers to raise money for research and awareness of the disease through an annual trek from the east end of Long Island to the
borough of Manhattan. During the send-off ceremony, students from the chorus, marching band and kickline performed for guests. Former Dean of Students Barbara Brown spoke to the students on behalf of the organization and in memory of Mary Murphy, a beloved North Babylon High School librarian who passed away from ALS in 2004. “You made a difference today,” said Ms. Brown. Since Mrs. Murphy’s untimely passing, North Babylon High School has donated more than $150,000 to help find a cure for the disease. This year, the high school raised more than $9,000 and presented Mr. Pendergast with an
oversized check. Mr. Pendergast, who has been living with the disease for 20 years, thanked the students for their donation. “I look around this auditorium and I see all of your faces, and I look into your hearts and I see hope,” he said. “I am not alone…I may live long enough to see a cure and that would be great, but if I do not, I will at least die with the peace and the satisfaction that I have done my best. I have done everything in my GARDEN OF KINDNESS - Teacher Cara Kerr and members of Santapogue’s power and I have made a student council work on the Garden of Kindness display in support of their Bucket difference.” Filling Character Education program. Following the brief ceremony, students joined the Ride for Life group, walking to Argyle Park in Babylon.
Second-grade students of Santapogue Elementary School in the West Babylon Union Free School District recently enjoyed a visit from members of the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County. During the annual visit,
the biologists shared with students a variety of sea life found in the oceans and bays of Long Island, such as starfish and horseshoe crabs. In support of the secondgrade science curriculum that explores animal life and habitats, students were
provided with a hands-on opportunity to obtain facts and information about the marine life. “This is a great way to learn,” said second-grader Jessica. “It was really fun to see the animals and even better to be able to touch them.”
