Still Missing The Meaning By: Jamie Lynn Ryan With the recent passing of Memorial Day, I thought it appropriate to resurrect an old column from 2006, as the sentiment remains the same no matter the year… I am willing to bet that there are many children who were probably raised to think the sole purpose of Memorial Day is strictly to roll out the barbecues, open the pool for the season, head to the beach for the first time and check out all those great sales. Pretty sad, when you think about it. Such a holiday is surely not a “happy” occasion in the traditional sense; although,
for most people, all that matters is that it qualifies as a paid day off. And there we are, off and running, blissfully unaware and increasingly unpatriotic as a result. When did this sense of apathy set it? Is it just a manifestation of the more recent generations, or is it representative of our country as a whole? Now, I’m certain there are many to whom this sentiment does not apply. Any veterans, or the family and friends of those who have served, are generally quite appreciative of such a day’s significance. I, for one, admit that I had never attended any kind of Memorial Day commemoration prior to this year when my family
decided to take a ride out to Calverton for the cemetery’s annual services. Sure, it was solemn, but you know what? So is the fact that hundreds of thousands of people have lost their lives over the course of the last several centuries in wars at home and abroad. Is it really asking too much to observe a day – a portion of a day, even – to appreciate that sacrifice? So, the next time some overly-commercialized holiday comes along, take a moment to reflect upon the reason why it was made a national holiday in the first place. I doubt it was to give people another excuse to have a barbecue.

Wilson Tech offers the AYES program to encourage automotive students to apply the skills they have learned in their Tech classroom in the workplace. According to Hurd, the Acura dealership was eager to sponsor a Tech student in hopes of finding responsible and knowledgeable new technicians that they could then hire. Both students will graduate in June with a Technical Endorsement on their Regent’s diplomas indicating they have passed
the requisite Regents exams, earned a 2-year Tech Certificate of Completion, and successfully passed a nationally recognized automotive exam. Wilson Tech is currently developing programs with other Long Island Acura dealerships for future internship and work-study opportunities for Tech students. At Wilson Tech’s annual Auto Job Fair, Joseph Zambrotta and Grant Howard so impressed Steve Hurd, service and parts director at Acura of Huntington, that he hired them as interns last summer and then the dealership offered them two days of paid workstudy this school year. For his ongoing support and guidance of these automotive technology students from North Babylon, Western Suffolk BOCES honored Hurd at its May board meeting.
Valhalla is a 34’ long 12’ 3” wide, a very stable boat that has plenty of room for both wheelchairs and passengers with a wide transom door and a hardtop enclosure for protection from the elements.
With his boat, docked in Lindenhurst, he is volunteering his spare time to take children with disabilities (along with a parent or guardian) or disabled veterans on fishing, snorkeling and boating trips in the Great South Bay.

On Sunday, May 18th, thirty members of The Babylon Chorale joined The Manhattan Chorale at Carnegie Hall to perform Ola Gjeilo’s Sunrise Mass. It was received joyously by the nearly full-house audience. The event, part of The Manhattan Concert Productions Masterworks Series, was conducted by Craig Arnold and accompanied by The New York Chamber Orchestra. The choral groups met for the first time on the morning of Friday, May 16th, to fine-tune every aspect of the moving Mass. The composer (a native of Norway who now resides in Manhattan) joined the group at rehearsals on both Friday and Saturday. Mr. Gjeilo also played accompanying piano with the New York City Chamber Orchestra while The Manhattan Chorale sang the world premier presentation of Dreamweaver. their experiences in concentration camps. The students wanted to know how people survive horrific life events but still maintain dignity, integrity and compassion; and the artistic task for the students was to find the proper medium and method to best respond to this question. They also wanted their artwork to pay tribute to two women who, in the face of extraordinary abominations, managed
not only to salvage their existence but to subsequently live full and productive lives in New York. The result is a large lucite “box” of approximately six feet in length, painted on both sides by students who have depicted scenes that bring the sisters’ story to life. Each spring, the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center offers competitions for students centered on a theme of
social justice, tolerance, and respect for diversity. The competitions offer students the opportunity to showcase their creative talents. Winning entries are exhibited at the Center and photographed for inclusion in its Competition Journal. The mission of the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County is to teach the history of the Holocaust and its lessons, through education and community
outreach. These include the dangers of antisemitism, racism, bullying and all other manifestations of intolerance, promoting resistance to prejudice and advocating respect for every human being. Usdan Center offers more than 40 programs in music, dance, theater, visual arts, creative writing, nature and ecology and chess, annually hosting more than 1,600 students from towns

Eighteen high school seniors from underserved communities on Long Island who completed Stony Brook’s Health Occupations Partnership for Excellence (HOPE) Program are on their way to college. Under the mentorship of Stony Brook University faculty, the two-year program fosters the academic development of 11th and 12th graders and preps them for future careers in the health industry. Five students will be attending Stony Brook University with their eyes wide opened to the burgeoning field of healthcare. Since its inception in 2005, the HOPE program has helped open new avenues for 126 promising high school students from underserved and racially and ethnically diverse communities. During the 2013-2014 academic year, more than 30 Stony Brook faculty and community members have instructed students, with educational venues that included lectures, hands-on demonstrations and shadowing professionals from multiple areas in medicine such as cardiothoracic care, surgery, and neurology; as well as in nursing, midwifery and respiratory care. “I could not believe how much I got out of the HOPE program, and I learned that healthcare is a great opportunity to not only help people but pursue many fields,” said Sierra Gardner, a senior from Wyandanch Memorial High School. “We learned there is way more to healthcare than just doctors and nurses,” added Gardner. Gardner became fascinated with the impact of technology on healthcare. Intrigued with biomedical
engineering, she applied to several undergraduate programs. Accepted to Stony Brook, she will major in biomedical engineering when she starts this fall. Like many of the HOPE “graduates,” Christine McIsaac, a senior from Longwood High School, who will major in either biology or psychology at Stony Brook, felt that her career interests by participating in HOPE, and that choosing a field in healthcare is certainly a leading possibility.
“Respiratory care is so interesting, and helps all kinds of patients. We also saw how much work goes into patient care at Stony Brook’s dental school and veterans’ home during our tours there. All of this has made me very interested in healthcare,” said McIsaac. Three other HOPE graduates who selected Stony Brook University will explore fields in scientific research.
Brandon Yalin, a Longwood senior, will study physics; his friend and Longwood classmate Max Stanley will also major in physics. Jessica Rodriguez, of Brentwood High School will major in biochemistry. “Physics is perfect for me,” Yalin. “I am interested in engineering but also considering healthcare, and being at Stony Brook University and near its hospital can only be a plus for me during my college years when I need to decide.” “It is inspiring to see each of these students talk about their experience with HOPE, the confidence they have gained, and their interest in science and healthcare,” said Judith Berhannan, Dean of Undergraduate Admissions at Stony Brook. “On top of all of that, some have chosen to come to Stony Brook to pursue their dreams.” “The HOPE program is an example of Stony Brook’s commitment to the community and to reduce healthcare disparities,” said Yvonne Spreckels, Director of Community Relations at Stony Brook University Hospital. “We are excited that some of these talented young people have decided to pursue careers in healthcare and look forward to the day when they will serve their communities as healthcare professionals.” Some of the other colleges these HOPE graduates will attend include Hofstra University, Suffolk County Community College, SUNY Geneseo, SUNY Binghampton, Sacred Heart University and Clemson University.
Film Festival Winners On May 9th, students from St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School won 2nd place honors in the category of animation for their video Life Of A Paper Clip and also won 3rd place honors for best documentary at the 12th annual Hendrick Hudson Film Festival. The Hendrick Hudson Film Festival gives local high school filmmakers from the surrounding areas the opportunity to see their talents on the big screen. Regarded as the premiere high school film festival in New York, it
showcases and highlights the film making talents of students throughout the tri-state area and across the country. SJB students Caroline Herrera of Deer Park and Phineas Reichert of East Northport created the digital animation for Life Of A Paper Clip. Their Computer Generated Imagery teacher Ms. Keri Kelly stated “I am so impressed with the work and determination these students put into their stop motion project. Phineas and Caroline are two talented individuals and I
cannot wait to see what the future holds for them.” Mr. Carl Coulanges, a teacher at SJB and the moderator of the SJB Media News Network offered; “the Hendrick Hudson Film Festival was a great experience for the SJB Media News Network. Our videos were selected out of more than 200 entries. These students are very dedicated and work extremely hard in producing content not only for the SJB community, but also for the world to see. I am very proud of them.”

Center is open to all young people from age 6 to 18. Although the mission of the Center is for every child to establish a relationship with the arts, the unique stimulation of the Center has caused many to go on to arts careers. Alumni include members
of Broadway shows and major music, theater, and dance ensembles such as the Boston Pops and the New York City Ballet. In addition to its regular programs, Usdan offers special opportunities for advanced high schoolage performing and visual

Summer Camp Coming This summer parents can keep their little leaguers of all ages both physically active and mentally engaged by signing them up for the Bulldog Ball Club Summer Baseball Camp. The camp will feature specialized baseball instruction and game play from top youth baseball coaches. At the camp, players will learn the fundamentals, skills and strategies
necessary to help them succeed on and off of the field. As part of their science curriculum, secondgrade students at Tooker Elementary School in the West Babylon School District have been learning about the lifecycle of ducks. The students conducted independent research on this interesting animal in the computer lab and
learned many interesting facts such as they are omnivorous and have an egg tooth to help them break out of their shell while hatching. Of course, for the students, the most exciting part of their study was watching the ducks hatch. As the ducks broke out of

Learning Is Ducky their shells between May 6 and 11, the students named their fluffy friends Peep, Lewis, Fuzzy and Fluffy. They even watched their ducklings run around and take a bath. The ducks were then returned to a local farm and were adopted by willing families.
Members of the fourthgrade select swing chorus at Marion G. Vedder Elementary School brought some sunshine to the Spangle Drive Senior Center as they visited the
seniors and sang songs about spring. Led by music teacher Lora Dellosso, the students sang Do, Re, Mi from The Sound of Music and Rainbow Connection from
The Muppet Movie. “The senior center is one of my favorite places to take the children because they bring smiles and joy to the seniors,” said Ms. Dellosso.
SPECIAL VISIT - Den 1 of Pack 99 Babylon Cub Scouts recently had the opportunity to visit Kilwins of Babylon. During the visit they learned how to make fudge and tried their ice cream.

“Neither greater purpose nor greater rewards exist than in the education of a child.” He went on to talk about the relevance of school and the importance of relationships throughout life. He talked about the “twists and turns” throughout his career and how keeping an opened mind and building relationships has helped him succeed. Cilmi said, “In many ways, those years made me who I am as a person. Build more relationships…more bridges, you will cross more rivers and explore more opportunities.” Cilmi spoke about being a victim of bullying in junior high school and
overcoming it. Two stories from high school sparked laughter among students. Cilmi described how his biology teacher threw a dead frog out the door in an example of what not to do in lab. He also told of how his physics teacher poked fun at Cilmi’s acne, asking him if his guitar blew up in his face. The 1982 graduate charged the students with this final remark. “Fellow Eagles, your experiences here at West Babylon have given you a great foundation on which to build your bridges. Your education here has given you all the basic tools to begin building those bridges. The rest is up to you.”

This summer, Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA), Long Island’s top-ranked arts school invites students to learn from the masters in a variety of disciplines. The LIHSA Summer Arts Academy offers young artists (entering grades 6-12 in the fall) a hands-on learning experience with professional artists who will help them to develop their skills.
