Celebrating Excellence Approximately 200 students from West Babylon Senior High School were recognized on May 15th at the school’s annual Principal’s Achievement Awards ceremony. After welcoming students and their invited guests, West Babylon Senior High School Principal Dr. Ellice Vassallo presented each of the department
chairs to present awards to the student receipients. Awards were presented in the areas of art, business, family & consumer science, technology, English, foreign language, health & physical education, mathematics, music, science, social studies, vocational education and leadership. Guest speaker Thomas Verni, a 1987 West Babylon
graduate and a retired New York City Police Department detective, addressed the audience following the award presentations. The West Babylon Senior High School string ensemble, directed by Barbara Kelly, provided the musical accompaniment throughout the event CELEBRATING EXCELLENCE - Approximately 200 students from West Babylon before guests headed to the Senior High School were recognized at the school’s annual Principal’s Achievement Awards ceremony on May 15th. Memorial Day weekend is upon us and, just like that, the unofficial start to summer beckons. Swimsuits will be unearthed from the back of closets, beach passes affixed to car windows, and bags packed with sunscreen and towels as the great majority of Long Islanders head to one of our local beaches to celebrate the season. For the last seven or so years, I have been attending the Jones Beach Air Show, taking in the breathtaking aerodynamics of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels and the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds on alternate years. It doesn’t matter how many shows – and pre-show arrivals – I have witnessed; it just never gets old. There is something incredible about witnessing these planes in flight, soaring against the sky in perfect formation.
Of course, Memorial Day weekend is only the beginning, and the hope is that there will be plenty more beautiful beach weekends to enjoy throughout the next several months, although, doesn’t it seem as though the nicest days are reserved for those spent inside the office staring at a computer screen? There is just no predicting Mother Nature, so best to take advantage of whatever rays of sunshine you can as soon as they begin to peek through. Speaking of unpredictable weather, I currently have tickets to about seven or eight concerts at the Jones Beach Theatre this year; fingers crossed that at least a few will be enjoyed under a clear summer sky, sans torrential downpour, lightning storm or any other inclement conditions. While none of my shows have ever been cancelled, there have

been several that pushed the boundaries. Just last summer, in fact, I found myself pondering just how “waterproof,” in fact, my phone was, and whether it was advisable to continue videoing the performance in front of me as sheets of rain streamed down around me. {The answers, in case you were wondering, were: A) not quite as waterproof as expected, and B) not so advisable.} So, enjoy your weekend, whatever it is you choose to do to usher in the summer season. Although the calendar indicates there’s still one month to go, the collective mindset seems to say there’s no need to wait. So slather on that sunscreen, grab your beach bag and dig your toes into the sand as the ocean caresses your feet. Just keep an eye on the sky for any storm clouds approaching.

The Babylon JuniorSenior High School Foreign Language Honor Society recently hosted the first student/teacher talent show, featuring teachers showcasing their talents alongside students in an effort to raise funds for the Promoting Health in Haiti organization. Throughout the course of the evening, 10 teachers took to the stage alongside the talented students to sing, dance, perform
musical numbers and recite poetry. Babylon Junior-Senior Art School teacher Cheryl Schweider and the National Art Honor Society students also created “Home for Haiti” magnets and sold them to the community for additional fundraising purposes. According to their website, the Promoting Health in Haiti organization seeks to improve health in the

Student/Teacher Talent Show island country through enhancing nursing education and knowledge. With the combined efforts of so many volunteers, the community raised more than $1,500 for the organization. As a means of expressing her gratitude, the president of PHH shared a video message with the students and thanked them for their help.
READING CHALLENGE - At the start of the school year, Forest Avenue Elementary School Principal Patricia Acocella challenged the students in Kristen Wilken’s class to collectively read 3,000 books by May 15th. If the students accepted the challenge and shared the reading equally, Ms. Acocella would treat the class to a pizza and ice cream party. At the May 15th celebration, Ms. Acocella was surprised to learn the students surpassed her challenge by reading 4,222 books. The class is already thinking of a new challenge for next year.
