As part of the grade level’s compact curriculum, and with an eye towards 21stcentury learning skills, Babylon Memorial Grade School fifth-graders from Rayna Awerlein’s and Chris Tordy’s classes recently received an enriching lesson on the environment and the importance of recycling. Working with Brooklynbased architecture firm Studio KCA, the students helped to create part of an outdoor pavilion made of 53,780 plastic bottles, the number of water bottles disposed of each hour in New York City. Out of the 200 designers
who submitted proposals, Studio KCA was chosen to create this art pavilion on Governors Island based on their design/concept submission to the City of Dreams Competition, sponsored by the American Institute of Architects New York, the Committee for Emerging New York Architects, the Structural Engineers Association and the not-for-profit Arts Organization. The finished project, which will be approximately 40 feet by 18 feet by 15 feet and include the fifth-graders’ handiwork, will serve as the backdrop for this year’s summer arts

events at Governors Island. After collecting more than 4,000 bottles, the two classes helped bring the firm’s “Head in the Clouds” pavilion design to life. Using mesh wire and netting, the students worked with the architects to weave in the recyclable materials and add blue-colored water for accents where appropriate. “This project served as a very visual reminder about the importance of helping the environment, in particular recycling,” stated Ms. Awerlein, whose son, a former Babylon Memorial student, is a member of the firm. “With our compact curriculum approach to teaching,” she continued, “we are always looking for ways to provide enrichment to our students, and with our 21st-century learning standards, a great deal of attention is paid toward learning collaboratively. This project provided both of those educational benefits.” As a special thank-you for all of their hard work, students will receive a reusable filter water bottle.

Recognition Luncheon

Federation of Organizations hosted a Senior Volunteer Recognition Luncheon on Friday, May 3rd at the Huntington Hilton. The event served to honor senior volunteers from the Foster Grandparent and Senior Companion Programs and was well attended by over 300 guests. The day was celebrated with a gala luncheon and dancing. The Foster Grandparent Program connects local senior citizen volunteers with special needs children in schools, Head Start centers, preschools and other community locations. Currently, over 170 Foster Grandparents serve as mentors and tutors to over 2100 children daily throughout Suffolk County. Joseph Greco, a Kindergarten teacher at Woods Road Elementary School in North Babylon was there to share his
experience with the Foster Grandparent Program. He spoke about the accomplishments his Foster Grandparent has made in the classroom. “The Foster Grandparent Program, from my perspective, is incredibly important, relevant and needed, especially in consideration of the times in which we live” he said. Federation also sponsors the Senior Companion Program. This program allows active seniors the opportunity to help frail seniors who are homebound. Maria Leonelli and Loretta Weiners, who receive the services of the Senior Companion Program, spoke to the audience about how having a Senior Companion in their life has allowed them to remain living independently and how thankful they are that this program is available. Because of the tremendous success
of these programs in communities all across Long Island, numerous corporate sponsors, including CA, Inc., Lincoln Computer Services, Astoria Federal Savings Bank, The Knapp Swezey Foundation, Corporate Synergies Group, Holtz Rubenstein Reminick LLP, Medford Chemists, Mutual of America, TLC Transportation, The Townwide Fund of Huntington, Total Management Corp. and Valley National Bank generously pledged their support. What Would You Do... By: Jamie Lynn Ryan What would you do if you won a million dollars? Well, in this day and age, the question is more, what would you do if you won many tens of millions of dollars, hundreds of millions even? After taxes, of course. And the answer? Well, it varies by person. Some people, when presented with such a seemingly farfetched concept, spout off a list of equally unrealistic purchases that they would immediately make – you know, the private island, jumbo jet, yacht… the whole deal. But then there are others who, should they ever have the good fortune to come into that kind of money, want only to “be comfortable” – to pay off remaining
mortgages and car loans, to make necessary repairs and renovations around the home, maybe buy a new car – nothing too outlandish really. Because really, once you take into account the taxes, plus your average life expectancy, a few million dollars can be blown through fairly quickly. It sounds like a lot, but is it really? Depends upon how you budget it. Plan a couple of family vacations, put some away for your children’s college funds, maybe some in the retirement fund… Which brings to light that other question – would you continue to work if you won such a jackpot? For some, the answer would be an easy and unequivocal “no.” And, if your only purpose of having a job is to make ends meet, that makes perfect sense.
But if you are fortunate enough to have an actual career, one that you have nurtured throughout high school, college and young adulthood, then why should money lessen that passion? If anything, it should allow you the freedom to explore other, perhaps less lucrative, options within that chosen field. Think of it as a new lease on life. Money can’t buy happiness, we know this much is true. But it sure can eliminate many of the daily stresses which cause unnecessary aggravation in our lives… which, in turn, would most likely result in increased happiness, no? Of course, the odds of anyone being forced to wrestle with these questions are fairly slim to none. But hey, you just never know.

The entire park included beautifullydesigned bathhouses and nautical-themed trash receptacles. By the mid-1930s, Jones Beach welcomed over 100,000 visitors on its busiest summer days. The exhibition will explore these two famous spots not only in their heydays, but will also look at what has happened during their decline, resurrection, and redefinitions over the past several decades. Where some once thought the sun might be setting on these two historic beaches, millions still pack their bags every summer to go there and make new memories. The perfect summer exhibition, Coney Island and Jones Beach will give visitors a fun and energetic history of how two iconic coastal areas became lasting people’s playgrounds. This exhibition is sponsored by Suffolk County, Astoria Federal Savings, Empire National Bank, Teachers Federal Credit Union and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. Located at 1200 Route 25A in Stony Brook, the Long Island Museum is a Smithsonian Affiliate dedicated to American history and art with a Long Island connection. The museum is open Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Coney Island and Jones Beach: Empires by the Sea opens Friday, June 14 in the Art Museum. On Friday, June 14th, the Long Island Museum in Stony Brook will present a new exhibition highlighting two of Long Island’s summer playgrounds. They are sun-drenched spectacles. Miles and miles of beaches and boardwalks jammed with smiling, tanned and half-dressed people of all ages. The mere mention of Coney Island or Jones Beach evokes summer itself. Coney Island and Jones Beach: Empires by the Sea will take visitors on a fun-filled ride through the history of these two landmarks, exploring the changing, complicated relationship between New Yorkers and their favorite seaside playgrounds. The exhibition will include a dazzling array of objects (including historic beachwear and amusement park artifacts), rare photographs, paintings, prints and archival film clips. Coney Island went from an unknown strip of sand to the world’s most famous seaside resort in the 19th century. People began going there shortly after a shell-crushed road connected it to the rest of Brooklyn in 1829. But it gradually became rowdy entertainment for the masses, home to three major amusement parks, and the birthplace of the roller coaster and the hot dog. By 1920, accessible by the subway, Coney Island was dubbed the “Nickel Empire.” But not everyone was charmed by the spectacle. Jones Beach was different: “Flowers, lawns, shrubs greet you, instead of papers, lunch boxes and dirt. Nothing is crowded, the sidewalks are wide, the buildings are low and attractively designed. The beach is apparently endless.” Master builder Robert Moses planned Jones Beach as an antidote to what he regarded as the excesses of Coney Island. In addition to forbidding carnival vendors and “honkey tonk,” Jones

Using keys to identify organisms and supplemental resources such as readings, diagrams and sorting cards, the students grouped and classified the organisms and described their interactions with the abiotic and biotic environment before assessing the current state of Argyle Lake’s biodiversity. “This was a challenging but fun unit,” said teacher Mary Beth Schappert. “The
field testing technique that we are using – the placement of leaf packs at the bottom of the lake – is new to field biologists and ecologists. It gained popularity last year when scientists used leaf packs to study the effects of the transoceanic highway corridor construction in South America on freshwater rivers and streams. The goal of the lesson is to teach the students about the importance of local biodiversity issues and also promote enthusiasm for science research.”

Babylon Junior High School students had the chance to perform a qualitative and quantitative analysis of organisms found in Argyle Lake as part of their research studies in the school’s Foundations of Science 7 class. Working in small groups and as a whole class, the students completed a three-week unit that focused on measuring the biodiversity of the lake. The unit of study both implemented the newly released Next Generation Science Standards and incorporated Common Core reading and math skills. In class, the students created leaf packets, which were comprised of nylon mesh bags full of dried leaves. In follow-up classes, the students placed these packs in the lake, where they acted as habitats for organisms. After
