Her courageous battle against breast cancer led to her involvement in an Oscar-nominated HBO documentary, “Mondays at Racine.” Racine is a salon in Islip where owners, sisters Rachel DeMolfetto and Cynthia Sansone, have been compassionately providing their services to Linda Hart and other breast cancer patients free of charge for several years following the loss of their own mother to breast cancer. Valhalla is a 34’ long 12’ 3” wide, a very stable boat that has plenty of room for both wheelchairs and passengers with a wide transom door and a hardtop enclosure for protection from the elements.

With his boat, docked in Lindenhurst, he is volunteering his spare time to take children with disabilities (along with a parent or guardian) or disabled veterans on fishing, snorkeling and boating trips in the Great South Bay.

Marking The Milestones By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’m not sure when it first occurred to me, but at some point over the course of the last few weeks, I came to the somewhat startling realization that it has been 10 full years since I graduated from college. A whole decade. Wow. I’m not sure why this came as such a shock. After all, the math clearly adds up. And I did attend my high school’s 10-year reunion a full 4 years ago. But still, it seemed that there would be a bit more of a cushion until the next milestone. I suppose time ﬂies while you’re busy

working to make ends meet and your life is not dictated by a bell schedule. Although, come to think of it, there were no bells to signal the beginning or ending of class in college, which was nice in its own way. It was that subtle transition from the structure of high school to the faux freedom of “the real world,” where you were able to choose a path well suited to your future pursuits and, well, pursue it. And now here we are, 10 years later. Bells have been replaced by alarm clocks and deadlines and bills and all those fun adult

responsibilities. To think we once thought finals and term papers were the ultimate source of stress, right? It almost makes school seem appealing once again. Almost. To all those graduating from college this Spring, congratulations. May you find something worth pursuing that brings you a great deal of happiness and fulfillment; ideally, something which pays the bills, of course. And may you savor these next years most of all as, before you know it, you will be receiving invitations to your own 10 year college reunion.

Scholarship Winners During the town’s annual Earth Day celebration in early May, six Babylon High School students were named winners in this year’s Babylon Covantage EcoTech scholarship contest, sponsored by Covanta Energy. The contest is open to students in any Town of Babylon school who have worked on projects related to sustainability and environmental solutions. Although this was Babylon’s first time entering the contest, the high school students claimed the top three

awards, and science research teacher Claire Birone was presented with an official proclamation from Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer and Babylon’s Mayor Ralph Scordino recognizing the great accomplishments of the research program and Babylon’s students. During the event, sophomore Jack Corcoran won third place and a $500 scholarship for his project, “The effects of changing pH levels in the phytotelmata on the rate of prey decomposition in Nepenthes alata.”

Seniors Jed Dale and Max Pitagno placed second and won a $750 scholarship for their project, “The bioremediation of 1,1,1,2-Tetrafluoroethane (R-134a) by Scenedesmus sp. as facilitated by TiO2 and activated charcoal.” The grand prize of a $1,000 scholarship went to seniors Emily Brown, Sara Mikovic and Meredith Wardell for their project, “The effect of apricot kernels, a proven natural pesticide, on the growth of Phaseolus vulgaris and Cynodon dactylon.”

Twenty-eight minutes and thirty seven seconds after the starting horn sounded, 12 year-old Luke Anderson crossed the finish line on a beautiful Saturday morning elated with his accomplishment. A leukemia survivor, Luke joined his family and other participants at the Walk-Run for Friends of Karen at the Long Island Marathon’s 5K Race. This 8th annual event began in 2007 with 25 participants and spearheaded by Luke’s mother, Evelyn Anderson, a former South Setauket,

resident, who wanted to celebrate her son’s life by running a race in his honor. In 2013, Luke ran with his older brother, Patrick, and their mom, and this year the sports-enthusiastic family, including younger sisters, Ciara and Shannon and dad Todd, drove from their New Milford CT. home the night before to rest up in a local hotel and get to the start line with 609 other participants – onequarter of them supporters of Friends of Karen. “It was amazing to see the support of all these people, running, walking and

raising funds for Friends of Karen,” said Evelyn. “And heartwarming for our family that we have an opportunity to give back to this organization in this fun way.” Since 1978, Friends of Karen has been providing emotional, financial and advocacy support for children with a lifethreatening illness and their families in order to keep them stable, functioning and able to cope. The organization has helped more than 12,900 children in the New York tri-state region.

they visited the seniors and sang songs about spring. Led by music teacher Lora Dellosso, the students sang Do, Re, Mi from The Sound of Music and Rainbow Connection from

The Muppet Movie. “The senior center is one of my favorite places to take the children because they bring smiles and joy to the seniors,” said Ms. Dellosso.

Appreciating Differences

Notaro entertained the students with physically challenged puppets to teach the students about being physically challenged. The guests also read books about friendships that celebrate differences and similarities and led a discussion about the subject matter. The highlight of the activity, however, was when Troisi sang “Let It Go,” from the Disney movie “Frozen,” honing in on the lesson about being different. First-grade teacher Donna Anselona-Troisi said, “These social skills need to be taught to children at a young age, thus making the world a more accepting and

happier place to live. We don’t always know the right thing to say or do, so we need to display these good manners and rules.” At the end of the program, each student brought home a bag of M&Ms, symbolizing that we are all different on the outside and the same on the inside. A list of “The Good Manner Rules for Meeting People Who Look Different and Learn Differently” was distributed to each student, as well as a bibliography of books that teach good character. In order to contribute to this cause, the school will host a fundraiser for amputees.

As a culminating activity, Dayna Troisi and Danielle Notaro from Hofstra University’s Club Limbitless visited the students. This special organization raises funds for the Amputee Coalition for America and A Leg to Stand On in order to provide free corrective surgery, prosthetic and orthopedic devices, mobility aids and rehabilitation to children with limb differences. Global Service Community service is an important tenet of the West Babylon Junior High School’s character education program, which was eagerly displayed by the community service club’s participation in Global Youth Service Day. The goal of Global Youth Service Day is to mobilize young people throughout the world to improve

their communities through service to others. Established in 1988 as a campaign of Youth Service America, GYSD is the largest service event worldwide and addresses critical community issues through young people working together. During an assembly, Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Councilman

on behalf of Stony Brook Children’s, are members of the advisory board for Make-A-Wish, Suffolk County. “The Make-a-Wish dinner is always a wonderful event, and this night was no exception,” said Robert Parker, MD, Director, Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. “I think what Make-a-Wish does is build memories, for the child and their families. I can’t think of a better organization to which to donate time, resources and money.” During the evening, children with lifethreatening medical conditions from across Suffolk County were granted wishes - and a few were past or current patients from Stony Brook Children’s like 17 year-old Rachel Ragone. In March of 2013, the Manorville resident was

diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a primary bone cancer that affects mainly children and adolescents. For almost a year, Rachel was receiving treatment at Stony Brook University Cancer Center under the supervision of Dr. Parker. In June of 2013, Rachel was given the opportunity to grant a wish through Make-AWish Suffolk County. Dreaming of walking around in art museums and cobblestone streets blanketed with history, Rachel’s wish was to go to Europe. Proud of her family history, Rachel and her family will be headed to Rome, Italy for a 9-day journey. “Knowing that I had this wish gave me something to look forward to while finishing up my treatment,” said Ragone. Rachel completed her treatment in January and was medically cleared to travel. “We are going to Rome, there is so much to
