Babylon Elementary School students’ art and music talents were on display during the school’s Spring Art and Music Festival this May. During the event, attendees viewed a myriad of art pieces created by the kindergarten through second-graders. The selections included onepoint perspective farm photos, surrealism eyes and a showcase of the traditional Japanese method of fish printing “Gyotaku.” With the help of technology, attendees were able to scan a QR code to hear the students speak about their favorite pieces in the show. After visiting the museum of student art, the attendees listed to the second-grade singing club perform a number of spirited selections.

Three Months & Still Swimming Strong By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Well, barring any unforeseen circumstances (fingers and ﬂippers crossed), tomorrow will mark Buddy the Betta’s much anticipated 3-month birthday with me. Why such a big fuss for such a tiny milestone? I think it’s fair to say that any landmarks achieved while residing in a fishbowl should be celebrated, don’t you? Other than his uncanny fascination with the ornamental plant he resides beside (well, in, really), he seems perfectly content to swim laps around his bowl, only pausing long enough to inhale a few ﬂakes, chew, and move on. They say that fish do truly come to know their owners over time, and I firmly believe this to be so. The moment I walk into the room, I

don’t even need to ﬂip the light switch before I see my little Buddy, face pressed against the glass, anxiously awaiting my return. Who needs a puppy with a greeting like that, right? Of course, it would be nice to interact on a bit more of a personal level. With this in mind, I decided to brieﬂy dip the tip of my finger into the bowl one night just to see what he would do. Well, let’s just say that anything moving near the surface is assumed to be edible. No sooner had my finger hit the water, then Buddy came zooming over, anxiously pecking. Curious, I decided to do a little research to see A.) if Bettas have actual teeth (they do); B.) if they can harm humans with aforementioned teeth (not so

much); and C.) if I was creating an unsanitary environment by welcoming these tiny Betta “kisses” to my finger. Apparently, as long as you thoroughly wash your hands and don’t immerse your entire hand in the bowl, you can even gently pet your Betta on the back. How sweet! I went on to read that, in most cases, these extremely intelligent fish can even be trained to perform simple tricks, such as “jumping” to get their food, spreading their fins in front of a mirror, and responding to feeding time by waiting in a set spot for the prized ﬂakes. Well, we’ve definitely mastered that last one. On to the rest of the circus tricks! Happy Birthday Buddy. Here’s to many more…

Art Students Shine

Second-graders at Parliament Place Elementary School in the North Babylon School District visited the Nassau County of Museum of Fine Art for a viewing of the “Out of the Vault” exhibit. As part of the visit, students visited four separate rooms in the museum, each of which featured a different artist or style of art, such as pop art, abstract expressionism, landscape paintings and animal drawings by John James Audobon. Long

Island University CW Post graduate students in art education and fine arts, led by professor Dr. Donna Tuman, designed ageappropriate activities for the Parliament students’ visits to each room. Activities included language arts, which students used to describe feelings evoked by looking at a colorful abstract painting and naming geometric shapes used to create a sculpture. In another activity, students were tasked with making

animal sounds and movements to mimic the animals in paintings, in addition to guided drawing exercises about students’ interpretations of the art on display. Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently announced the winners of the 2015 Babylon Covantage EcoTech scholarships at the Town of Babylon’s Annual Earth Day Celebration, where sixth grader Ethan Schubart of Babylon Memorial Grade School was awarded the first place prize of $1,000 for his project researching the effect that gas powered leaf blowers have on air quality. Ethan was praised by Supervisor Schaffer and Covanta’s Mark O’Brien for his dedicated research and displaying substantial knowledge on the subject. Joining Supervisor Schaffer were Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Councilwoman Jackie Gordon, Councilman Tom Donnelly, New York State Senator Michael Venditto, Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre and Assistant Deputy Suffolk County Executive Tim Sini. The Babylon Covantage EcoTech scholarship contest is a public/private partnership between the Town and Covanta Energy, which operates the energy-from-waste facility in West Babylon. It is designed to encourage students who are studying environmental science to focus on renewable energy sources, greenhouse gas reduction, development of alternative building materials or any other means to reduce global warming and environmental degradation. 2015 is the 8th consecutive year that these scholarships have been awarded. West Babylon Senior High School student and Students Against Destructive Decisions President Samantha Mammarella is the recipient of the Suffolk County High School Principals Association/ Allstate Safe-Driving Award for her determined efforts to raise awareness of distracted driving. She was recently honored for

her efforts during the SCHSPA luncheon in April. Mammarella has been an active member of SADD for the past four years, having participated in the Halloween Party event to encourage safe driving. She and SADD members also draw messages in chalk about safe driving on the high school walls during the annual Chalk Walk. She also assists in

the Celebrate My Drive campaign by hanging posters about texting and drinking while driving and obtains pledges from peers and staff not to drink or text behind the wheel. One additional way in which Mammarella touts the dangers of unsafe driving is by taking a central role of the Grim Reaper, who coordinates the Day of the Dead event. On this day, students are taken out of the class, their faces painted white and their tombstone hung in the hall, to represent an unsafe driving death. The escorting of students out of their classes provides non-participating students with a powerful display of the consequences of drunk driving, SADD advisor Chris Jonasson explained. “I believe that kids are really starting to see the importance and understand the effects of safe driving,” Samantha said. “We show students that it is not just their life they’re going to impact and possibly save, but many others.”
