Special Delivery By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Several weeks ago, shortly after the passing of my “Pal,” my Grandpa, we discovered what appeared to be a small bird’s nest nestled under the awning in the backyard. Assuming it was just a collection of twigsin-progress, I gingerly climbed on top of a chair to peek inside, only to find three beautiful blue eggs, clearly from the likes of a robin. No one was certain how long it had been there, though obviously enough time for the mama bird to lay these eggs. Not wanting to disturb the carefully orchestrated set-up, we left everything as it was and waited – from a safe distance – to see if the mother would return. Well, return she did and, within a few days, a fourth egg appeared in the nest, as she guarded her stash, fleeing only briefly upon any human sightings.
Now, you may be wondering, what’s the big deal? It’s spring, ‘tis the season for the birds and the bees and all of nature to frolic and procreate. While this is true, it must be noted that, in the 55 years my grandparents resided in this house, there were most likely exactly zero nests successful built by any birds. This was due to the fact that my Grandpa, lovable as he was, did not care for the messy remnants of twigs and leaves that the birds tended to leave while in the “construction” stage of things. At the first sign of a nest-in-progress, out would come the broom, sweeping all of their hard work away in one fell swoop. But now, here they were – four, tiny, perfect Easter-looking eggs, ready to hatch at any moment with brand new life. We kept a watchful eye on them for weeks, until one day, out popped a baby, all pink and naked, flopped on the other three eggs, which were now
showing signs of beginning to crack as well. A few days later, four fuzzy little hatchlings resided in the nest, napping in a pile of soft, pulsating fur, eyes not quite open, occasionally opening their beaks in case food happened to be lurking nearby. As of this writing, the four are still happily cohabitating, the fuzz gradually beginning to be filled in with soft gray feathers, the eyes fully open and alert, the beaks ready and waiting for mama’s next meal delivery. According to most references, it may be as little as a week before these little chicks are ready to fly off on their own. And such is the circle of life… How wonderful to be able to witness it right in Grandma and Grandpa’s backyard, especially at this time. There are those who believe in signs – for those, I don’t think you could ask for a clearer indication that this special delivery was intended just for us, right here, right now.

Scoring Scholarships Three Babylon-Junior Senior High School research students were awarded scholarships for their research and work on green projects as part of the Babylon Covantage EcoTech Scholarship Contest. They were presented with their awards on May 7th at the Town of Babylon’s Earth Day celebration at Town Hall. Babylon-Junior Senior High School senior Jack Corcoran’s project, “The Effect of Heat on the Potency of Pheromone Trails Produced by Pogonomyrmex barbatus,”
placed third overall, earning him a prize of $500. He studied how rising global temperatures impact pheromone signaling in harvester ants. Babylon-Junior Senior High School juniors Samuel Caponi and Gerard Gravina’s team project, “The Effects of Salt Tolerant Bacteria on the Growth of Pisum sativum in a High Salinity Environment,” placed seventh overall and earned them a scholarship of $125 each. The team forced a novel symbiotic relationship between pea plants and soil bacteria that enables these non-
salt tolerant plants to withstand and thrive after salt water flooding has taken place. The Babylon Covantage EcoTech Scholarship Contest is designed to encourage students who are conducting science fair projects or advanced study projects in environmental science courses to focus on renewable energy sources, greenhouse gas reduction, development of alternative building materials or any other means to reduce global warming and environmental degradation.
Top Honors Seven Babylon JuniorSenior High School students, accompanied by adviser and Babylon School District business chairperson Claire Reilly, traveled to Nashville, Tennessee, from April 23rd-26th to compete at the DECA International Career Development Conference. In order to compete in this event, students had to qualify by placing at the state level in Rochester,
N.Y., in March. There were more than 18,000 students from all over the country competing at the international competition. The team of Michael Logan and Jack Corcoran placed first in the Travel and Tourism category. Ryan Cosgro came in second place in Restaurant and Food Service Management, while Agnes Goldin placed fifth in Principles of Hospitality. In the Visual Advertising
category, Maggie Higgins came in first place and Jillian Gaare placed third. Quinn LaRock scored fifth place in Sports and Entertainment Marketing. DECA is a cocurricular club that focuses on preparing students for careers in business, entrepreneurship, marketing and finance. DECA students are also enrolled in business classes at Babylon Junior-Senior High School.

Recycling Creatively
After learning all about the Earth and how to protect it, kindergartners in Jennifer Brooks’ class at Babylon Elementary School brainstormed different ways to reduce, reuse and recycle items.
The students were tasked with hunting through their recycle bins at home and finding a way to repurpose the item. They were quite creative with their recycling projects, making a bank out of an
introduce students to new fruits and vegetables. In the cafeteria during breakfast and lunch, a new color of the rainbow was featured each day of the week. Students were also asked to pack a snack of the same color and wear that color to show their support of healthy eating habits. Before the week kicked off, Babylon Elementary School students were treated to a lesson on the rainbow of fruits and
vegetables on May 6th by Carol Ann Grodski, Babylon School District’s food service director, and chef Marianna Dayton. Students learned about all the nutrients and vitamins provided by the different colored fruits and vegetables and were challenged to eat all the colors of the rainbow each day during the week. The students also sampled some vegetables in beet hummus.

Students throughout North Babylon School District were honored at an awards ceremony for their outstanding work in the Festival of the Arts District Art Show at Babylon Town Hall. Students received a variety of notable awards, including: Superintendent’s Award to North Babylon High School student Ruth Mistretta; Supervisor’s Award to Belmont Elementary School student Aaliyah Lamarre; Director’s Award
to Amanda Lucchetti and North Babylon High School art teacher Karen Kennely; and Best in Show Awards to North Babylon High School student Shauneil Williams and Robert Moses Middle School student Ashley Kelly. They were joined in attendance by Superintendent of Schools Glen Eschbach, Assistant Superintendent for Personnel and Educational Operation Dr. Judith Marino, several members of the board of education,
Deputy Town Supervisor Tony Martinez and Town Councilman Tom Donnelly. Prizes included scholarships to the Art League of Long Island, memberships in the Babylon Arts Council, Art League of Long Island and Hofstra University Museum, passes to the Long Island Children’s Museum and art supplies. The ceremony served to recognize the remarkable artwork of North Babylon students.

Spare Change
Every year during Lent, Pre-K through 8th grade students at Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park participated in the Lenten Rice Bowls program, sponsored by Catholic Relief Services. Middle School
Community Helpers distribute cardboard “Rice Bowls” to the student body, offering them a wonderful opportunity to practice their Christian Lenten responsibility of giving alms to those in need. Students collect spare
change from parents and family and give of their own allowance or earnings. The money collected is sent to Catholic Relief Services, where funding is used to feed, clothe and shelter those in need around the world. SSCM students give big every year, of their own, and there’s no doubt about it, their giving changes lives throughout the world. If a student donates $1 a day during the 40 days of Lent, that $40 will provide one month of food for a family, two years worth of seeds for a farmer and three months of clean water for four families. As we come to the end of the Easter season, perhaps the generosity of children is a good reminder that Lent is not the only time when giving means the world to those in need.
Walking for a Cause Babylon Memorial Grade School held its annual walkathon to support the ALS Ride for Life organization to raise money and awareness for Lou Gehrig’s disease on May 5th. Student participants donated $1 to spend their recess walking the perimeter of the school. On May 12th, students will again have the opportunity
to support the cause by donating $1 to “put ALS to sleep” by wearing their pajamas to school. All donations will be presented to Chris Pendergast and ALS Ride for Life when they make their annual ride from East Hampton to Manhattan on May 17, stopping at Babylon Memorial Grade School and Babylon JuniorSenior High School. The
donations help families with medical expenses and fund research efforts for ALS. In March, students and staff at Babylon Memorial Grade School attended a presentation about the importance of perseverance and hard work, hosted by representatives from the organization.

Trash to Fashion Cardboard shoes, Dorito dresses and paper towel roll hairclips are just some of the few designs that made it to the runway at the Babylon Memorial Grade School Trash to Fashion Show on May 5th. Sixth-graders have been spending the last few weeks conceptualizing, designing
and fabricating clothing out of discarded items found in the garbage can. They used these recycled treasures to create oneof-a-kind fashions for the runway. Babylon Memorial Grade School librarian Lisa Lindeman, art teacher Pat Stork and special education
teacher Pat Hauk have been working with the students in the art room during their lunch and recess periods. The sixthgraders and their recycled fashions participated in the Students of Long Island Maker Expo at Bay Shore Middle School on May 7th.

A Work of Art Fifth-graders at Babylon Memorial Grade School were recently challenged with taking what they had learned in their social studies lesson and transforming it into art. Students in Lisa Necroto’s class spent the last month learning about their Underground Railroad as part of their fifth-grade social studies curriculum. After studying the different people
involved and how they overcame many obstacles, the students were tasked with making their own Freedom Quilt. The class researched designs from old quilts and also read “Sweet Clara’s Freedom Quilt” to get inspiration for their own patches. The fifth-graders choose one element from that period of time and designed a square piece of a quilt using felt and glue.
Babylon Memorial Grade School art teacher Pat Stork worked with the class in their designs, which ranged from the North Star, depictions of Harriet Tubman and Joe “Pegleg” Morgan to the Bear Claw and Monkey Wrench symbols. Stork took the squares and sewed them together to form their own Freedom Quilt, which will hang outside the school’s cafeteria.

Twelve year-old animal educator and journalist Victoria Bonavita was honored to have been invited by NYS Senator Phil Boyle to speak on June 7th in Albany, in the Well of the Legislative Office Building for the 6th annual Animal Advocacy Day event, which is sponsored by Senator Boyle and NYS Assemblyman Jim Tedisco. All are welcome to this exciting program that was created to help strengthen the animal cruelty laws in NY. It’s a non-partisan
event designed to further protect our pets and wildlife from abuse and cruelty. There will be many people attending to help educate and speak out on behalf of animals, discussing ways we can help protect them, and lending support to strengthening laws like “Buster’s Law” which made animal cruelty a felony in NY. Millions of animals get abused every year. Animal Advocacy Day is your chance to help stop the abuse by lending your voice
to these very important issues. The 6th Annual NYS Animal Advocacy Day will be held on Tuesday, June 7th from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Well of the Legislative Office Building in Albany.
