EYEBROW THREADING BY
S
econd-grade students of Tooker Avenue Elementary School in the West Babylon Union Free School District got their hands dirty during a Science lesson on the plant cycle. Students explored the parts and growth process of a plant and then put their lessons into action by planting cosmos and zinnias. In addition to the plant cycle, students studied the life cycle of a butterfly and examined five larvae in their classrooms.

Sunshine & Socializing By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As I sit here on deadline, writing my column at the eleventh hour – as usual – is it wrong that the only thought I have is how I would rather be lying on the beach, soaking up the sun, on this fine spring day? Nothing against work – it just tends to conflict with the nice weather, you know? Sure, summer isn’t even officially underway yet, but the signs are everywhere. Concert schedules are out, vacations are being planned, baseball is in full swing – before you know it, it will be time to break out the
BBQ and open the pool for the first summer soiree. School? Work? Eh, plenty of time for that in the winter. Now it’s just a matter of coordinating all those fun summer plans, which is often easier said than done. Is it just me, or has it become increasingly difficult to set anything in stone? No matter the amount of advance notice, things always seem to fall through at the last second. Me, when I make plans, I stick with them. Barring an unexpected emergency, there is really no legitimate reason to cancel on someone. Call it a pet peeve, but there’s nothing worse
than looking forward to something only to have it cancelled. Kind of makes you not want to even bother. It’s almost better to play it by ear, see how it goes… and if things fall into place – great. If not, at least you didn’t waste your time getting your hopes up, right? I think that will be my mantra for this summer. Nice and relaxing. No stress, no aggravation, just enjoyment. And if, when all is said and done, that means lying on the beach by myself…so be it. I can think of worse things. See ya on the sand!

The first Arbor Day took place in 1872 in Nebraska. It was the brainchild of Julius Morton who worked to improve agricultural techniques in Nebraska and throughout the United States. He proposed that a special day be set aside dedicated to tree planting and increasing awareness of the importance of trees. In the years following that first Arbor Day,
Morton’s idea spread beyond Nebraska. Today all 50 states celebrate Arbor Day. President Richard Nixon proclaimed the last Friday in April as National Arbor Day. The Babylon Rotary Club continues its tradition of providing nearly 2,000 Blue Spruce saplings to first grade students in local schools during the Annual Arbor Day celebration each
year. To date the Rotary has donated nearly 37,000 trees. Thousands of these saplings are now fully grown trees which adorn our neighborhoods. Deputy Presiding Officer Wayne Horsley, who is Chair of Babylon Rotary’s Arbor Day Program, had the opportunity to visit with students at Babylon Elementary School in Babylon.

The West Babylon Union Free School District consistently works to do its part for the environment and encourages its students to make responsible choices that will positively impact its carbon footprint. The district recently completed an Energy Performance Contract with the energy service company Ameresco, which will result in an estimated first-year savings of $272,087 for the district. Ameresco has projected that the district’s guaranteed savings over an 18-year period will be approximately $6,561,888. The district has also received LIPA energy efficiency rebates of $320,020 to date, and may receive more. This is a significant amount of money for the district, since the original rebate estimate, when the contract was signed, was only $57,290. The individual schools are doing their part as well. Virtual backpacks and email chains are utilized to conserve paper use, and classrooms, lunchrooms
and staff rooms actively recycle. Last year, students of West Babylon Senior High School, under the advisement of Andrea Montalvo, took part in a project in which they recycled 500 bottles in order to earn the $25 needed to adopt an animal from the World Wildlife Federation. Through their efforts, they were able to adopt a tiger. Continuing the project this year, the students focused on the animal being sponsored by the Bronx Zoo as part of its “Run for the Wild” event in which they raise money for one particular species. This year’s animal is the elephant. In preparation for Earth Day, students gathered bottles with the support of faculty and staff and built a 3-D elephant in the school lobby using the bottles. By doing so, they hoped to raise awareness of the amount of bottles that are used in their school, and how with a little effort, everyone can play a part in saving the planet.

The West Babylon Lions Club is holding its 17th Annual St. Anthony’s Feast from June 7th through June 9th. The Feast has become a West Babylon tradition over the years, where kids and adults get together for good old-fashioned fun and games. Some of the rides featured will include a Ferris Wheel, Tilt-AWhirl, Merry-Go-Round and Bumper cars. Aside from the rides, remember to bring your appetite! There will be pizza, sausage and peppers, calzones, Philly cheese steak, hamburgers and hot dogs, to name a few. There will be deep-fried Oreo’s, cannolis, funnel cakes and ice cream. On Sunday, there will be the traditional Cannoli-eating contest, and the West Babylon Idol contest. The hours of the Feast are Friday, June 7th, from 6 to 11 p.m.; Saturday, June 8th, from 4 to 11 p.m.; and Sunday, June

The motto is: “We Serve.” This is the largest fundraiser of the year, and the money raised goes to helping the needy in the community. Over the past 15 years, the club has given out almost $250,000 to those in need. Praying from the soul not for gold or fortune, but offering prayers of love and thanksgiving for the present moment joy that I am part of in communion with the One. And in the silence, silhouetted by the setting sun, I say vespers. A sudden parting of the living canopy; I am engulfed in brilliant radiance; a transubstantiation of my spirit into the god light.

Extending classroom lessons on the importance of developing a lifelong love of reading, kindergarten through second-grade students at Babylon Elementary School in the Babylon School District once again participated in the Parents As Reading Partners program this April. This year’s event was themed “Once Upon a Time…Read Happily Ever After” and called for the students to enjoy books in the genres of nursery rhymes, fairy tales, fables, folk tales and legends. With a schoolwide goal of reading 10,000 books, the students were encouraged to read during free times and nightly with their families over the course of the three-week program. Their weekly progress was charted on a Rapunzel-themed display at the school. Throughout the program, special community and school district visitors read to the students in their classrooms. Students also had the chance to visit the PTA book fair and attend schoolwide events, such as a ballet presentation of Snow White and National Marionette showing of Peter And The Wolf. Additionally, firstgrade students in Leah Weissinger’s class completed a reader’s theater production they called “Fairy Tale Party,” and each Friday the entire school came to school dressed based on a different PARP theme day.

Second-grade students of Tooker Avenue Elementary School in the West Babylon Union Free School District got their hands dirty during a science lesson on the plant cycle. Students
explored the parts and growth process of a plant and then put their lessons into action by planting cosmos and zinnias. In addition to the plant cycle, students studied
the life cycle of a butterfly and examined five larvae in their classrooms. Their cross-curricular study, which included poetry writing in honor of National Poetry Month,
culminated in the release of the butterflies in the schoolyard. “It is wonderful for the students to take part in these types of hands-on lessons,” teacher AnnMarie
Ayerle. “They provide them with a wonderful opportunity to experience the concepts they’ve learned about in a real-life scenario.”
