Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently joined with members of the Town Board to honor representatives from the Federation of Organizations’ Foster Grandparent and Senior Companion programs in celebration of National Service Day. Supervisor Schaffer and

the Town Board thanked them for their commitment to community service and presented them with an official Town Proclamation. As part of the Foster Grandparent program, seniors provide one-on-one assistance and tutoring to children in schools, Head Start centers and pre-schools across Suffolk

County. There are currently 27 Foster Grandparents helping out in nine schools within the Town of Babylon. The Senior Companion program allows volunteers over the age of 55 to assist in providing friendship and support to elderly residents who may be frail or disabled.

United Cerebral Palsy Association of Greater Suffolk will present its 25th Annual Golf Classic, sponsored by Arch Insurance Group, on Monday, May 19th at Glen Head Country Club in Glen Head. This year’s event will honor Stewart Fellner, chief financial officer of Setton Farms and Robert Donaldson, CEO of The Donaldson Companies. Stewart, a Wantagh resident, has been a longtime friend and supporter of UCP of Suffolk. He has participated in the Golf Classic for more than 10 years. The nonprofit was established in 2009 to assist law enforcement agencies with this potentially life saving body armor for their four legged K9 Officers. Through private and corporate sponsorships, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. provided over 930 law enforcement dogs in 39 states with protective vests since 2009 at a cost of $880,000. The organization orders the U.S. made vests exclusively from distributor Regency Police Supply in Hyannis, MA, who also does the custom embroidery on the body armor. New K9 graduates as well as K9’s with expired vests are eligible to participate. The program is open to law enforcement dogs who are US employed, certified and at least 19 months of age. Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. was named as a charity partner in March of 2014 in a nationwide Groupon Campaign which raised over $335,000 in 19 days. The non-profit will be providing over 350 law enforcement dogs nationwide with the protective body armor in memory of K9 Rocco of the Pittsburgh Police Department who sacrificed his life in the line of duty in January of 2014. PARADE OF HATS - There is nothing more festive than a spring hat, and kindergarten students at Forest Avenue Elementary School in West Babylon brought hats from home to decorate with paint, flowers and other objects. During the annual Spring Hat Day, the students paraded down the halls of the school wearing their fantastic creations. Long Island Crisis Center (LICC) Executive Director Linda Leonard was honored by more 350 of Long Island’s most ardent public education supporters recently, as one of 16 honorees to receive the 2014 Nassau BOCES Education Partner Award at the Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation’s annual gala earlier this month. The distinction is bestowed on those individuals or organizations that have made a substantial impact on public education in Nassau County. Leonard represented the LICC, which was lauded as one of the most devoted institutions in support of public education on Long Island. A strategic education partner with school districts since 1967, Nassau BOCES created the awards program to recognize those who

share its mission of ensuring a successful, challenging, caring and safe environment that enables students of all ages and abilities to achieve their maximum potential. These outstanding individuals and organizations have made strides to accomplishing key educational goals embraced by Nassau BOCES, such as ensuring student success. The Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation is an independent nonprofit organization that raises funds for innovative educational programs that fall outside of the agency’s budget. “The Long Island Crisis Center is guided by the highest professional and ethical standards and infused with a rigorous commitment to excellence,” wrote the center’s award nominator. “The center helps the

most marginalized and disenfranchised populations find their voice, advocating with and for them. The LICC is willing to take risks, both politically and financially, so that all people have equal and appropriate services available to them.” When it began in 1971, the Long Island Crisis Center was a singlephone-line suicide prevention hotline. In the past 42 years, it has grown into a major crisis intervention center, operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. It is staffed around-the-clock by trained counselors, who help more than 11,000 cases annually. The center now features six telephone hotlines, live online chat, texting and walk-in counseling. The center offers translation services for

Long Island’s increasingly diverse immigrant population, and serves as backup to the national suicide hotline 1-800-Suicide, Children of Hope, the Long Island Railroad (in response to the occurrence of suicides on railroad platforms) and numerous Long Island agencies. In response to the growing crises among lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth, the center created the Pride for Youth program. PFY services include individual, family and group counseling, sexual health services (including HIV testing), disease and unintended pregnancy prevention, and youth leadership opportunities. The cornerstone of PFY is The Coffeehouse, a weekly drop-in center for LGBT youth ages 13 to 21. LICC also offers extensive outreach to

Crisis Center Honored Long Island schools through its Building Healthy Lives Through Education program. Workshops are delivered to individual classrooms, not large assemblies, in order to maximize student and teacher interaction. Topics are age-appropriate and carefully scripted, and include suicide prevention and awareness, anger management, understanding selfinjury, the dangers of cyberbullying, understanding homophobia and transphobia, and adolescent depression. As of last school year, more than 13,000 students and educators participated in the program. The center offers free, high-quality, confidential programs and services to support and empower Long Islanders at critical times in their lives,

based on a series of core values that include timeliness, integrity, respect, transparency, empowerment and innovation. And the center has gone a long way to making that last value work for all the others. Celebrating Spring Spring was in the air as kindergarten students in Yvonne Spilka’s class teamed up with their third-grade buddies from Nancy Turano’s class at Santapogue Elementary School in West Babylon to create papier-mâché eggs.

This popular craft consists of wrapping a form, in this case an oval egg, with paper pieces bound with starch and glue. The students utilized their cutting, measuring and creative skills to create colorful eggs that were

displayed for all of their peers. Creating papier-mâché eggs was a culminating activity for lessons learned about animals that lay eggs naturally.

Lighting It Up Blue World Autism Day, celebrated on April 2nd, prompted various activities throughout the month for West Babylon High School students who are working to raise awareness of this condition that affects one out of 68 children. During the day’s fundraising

activities, students and staff raised approximately $5,000 for autism research. Students and staff sported blue T-shirts to show their support for the cause, and banners were placed throughout the school. Athletic teams wore autism awareness shirts,

designed by art teacher James Fulton, during sports competitions. Numerous T-shirts with a Light It Up Blue motto emphasized that students with autism may be “different” but they are not “less” than their peers.

Long Island’s Best West Babylon High School senior-artists Luke Adams and Ryan Flanagan were selected to display their artwork in the juried Long Island’s Best Young Artists Exhibition sponsored by the Heckscher Museum of Art in Huntington from March 20th to April 27th. The students were two of 80 students chosen to

present their artwork in this prestigious show out of 350 submissions from 51 public and private schools in Nassau and Suffolk counties. Both artists, taught by Christine Iaquinto, entered their work into the category of digital media. Luke’s digital art piece is titled “Aura,” while Ryan’s is titled “Lost Signal.”

Luke is also the winner of the prestigious Renzo S. Bianchi Scholarship Award. “To have two students’ work selected is quite an accomplishment for the artists, as well as the art teachers who have taught them throughout their careers at West Babylon High School,” Principal Dr. Ellice Vassallo said.

Bonnet Day

For the ninth consecutive year, kindergarten and first-grade students at North Babylon’s William E. DeLuca Jr. Elementary School celebrated spring by showcasing their creativity. On April 11th, the

students proudly wore their creativity on their head, as they participated in the school’s annual Bonnet Day. While wearing their hats, the students went on an egg hunt to find the hidden surprises locked inside the colorful

plastic eggs. The eggs were hidden by Principal Norann McManus, who continued her tradition of getting into the spirit of the event by dressing in a bunny costume, much to the delight of the students.

West Babylon High School’s robotics club competition teams ended a successful season and are now preparing for next year’s competitions. The 2013-2014 season concluded with a firstplace alliance for the gold competition team during the FTC Long Island Qualifying Tournament, which qualified them for the NYC/Long Island Regional Championship competition at the NYU Polytechnic School of Engineering. In March, the club’s gold and blue teams participated in the FIRST Tech Challenge at Syosset High School, a new experience for the club members. The teams designed,

programmed and built two different robots and competed against 22 teams from across Long Island. As a result of their hard work and dedication, both of the robots performed well, with the gold team’s robot ranking in the top five, and the blue team’s robot ranked in the top 10. Even with a number of mechanical issues, the students were able to fix problems and continue in the competition. Adviser Gerard DeSimone said the best part of the day was being asked to compete in an alliance, where the top teams request a playoff grouping against each other. “It’s a real honor to be asked to be part of an

alliance,” Mr. DeSimone said. “The fact that both of our teams were picked by different alliances is truly an accomplishment for our club.” The gold competition team includes: Luke Bianco, Ronald Bolosan, Michelle Diep (captain), Seamus Earekson, John Kryjak, Ryan Meurlin, Anthony Mistretta, Javier Reyes, Michael Valenti and Troy Womble. The blue competition team includes: Matthew Hellriegel, Justin Hyner, Andrew Karatnytsky, Anthony Lanfranchi (captain), Isaak Morales and Johnny Starzee. Dominick Sora and Keiran Yee are part of the programming team.
