REVITALIZATION PROJECT - Sean Hotelling’s Eagle Project involved revitalizing a small veteran’s cemetery on Larsen Lane that desperately needed care. Sean organized Troop 175 to come in and remove overgrown shrubs, plant new trees, bring in six yards of new soil, install a new section of fence and also install a brand new flag pole in their honor.

EAGLE PROJECT UNDERWAY - Justin Leeb’s Eagle Project entailed leading Troop 175 to build two green fly traps for a march near Cedar Beach. The Troop spent the entire day cutting, painting and assembling them. When Justin presents these traps to the town, he also plans to organize a beach cleanup with Troop 175.

Let’s try something different for a change. Instead of waiting until the eleventh hour to compose my thoughts for the week, I’ve decided to jot down a bit each day, with hopes that these random ramblings will gel into a somewhat coherent theme. Sounds just abstract enough to work. Monday… The weekly “fresh start” we all seek, yet are often disappointed by about 10 minutes into. For me, the perfect opportunity to catch up on the avalanche of e-mails that have surely accumulated over the weekend, while methodically trying to plan the remainder of the week’s activities. A quick scan of social media says everyone is still buzzing about last night’s

highly anticipated season premiere of Game of Thrones. Me, I’m still working my way through the series of five larger-than-life books. Tuesday… Into the fray again, trying to keep pace with the workflow in preparation for my day off on Friday, yet another reason to get a jump on that column. Nothing but rain and clouds outside, which makes for a decidedly dreary disposition. But, I suppose such an atmosphere is far more conducive to accomplishing tasks on the endless To Do list. Better not to be tempted by the sun’s rays, beckoning you to take an extended lunch. Wednesday… Yet another lovely day in the neighborhood, or so I briefly glimpsed on my way into the office. Word is it’s 66º and sunny. One of these days, this

kind of weather will coincide with a weekend. Maybe. But alas, here I sit at my keyboard, typing away at the local community news and events. Summer fun in the sun can’t come soon enough. Thursday… The eleventh hour. One day short of a deadline; for me, tomorrow will be spent helping to run the Society of Professional Journalists’ Annual Region I Conference, this year hosted by Hofstra University and sponsored by our very own Press Club of Long Island. A full schedule of panels and lectures by some of the region’s finest journalists is on tap, a muchneeded reminder of why it was I became involved in this field to begin with. And so, I’m off. All around Deer Park’s Saints Cyril and Methodius School this month, planet Earth is all the talk. Students are creating projects, reading stories, doing presentations, participating in discussion groups and learning all about what each one of us can do to help conserve natural resources and show the planet some respect. First graders shown here have been enjoying their April theme: Caring for the Earth. The essential question the students are pondering: Why is it important to protect and conserve our Natural Resources? Making use of timely materials such as this week’s Scholastic News article, “Speak for the Earth,” the class has been discussing ways that each and every one of us can help the earth. Younger grades joined discussions on how they can pitch in and do their part to protect the planet by recycling paper, plastic, glass and metal, by helping to plant trees and by turning off water or lights when they are not in use.

Having pool parties; can’t wait to go to the beach. Having my birthday party with my crazy friends, just like Willy Wonka.

Reduce. Reuse. Recycle! Students in higher grades have been talking about the earth’s ecosystems and ways to best protect our ozone, so that this important component of the earth’s atmosphere can continue protecting us from harmful ultraviolet sunlight (UVB). Second graders took on the dangers that humans can inflict on the seas. They discussed how something as simple as a plastic bag littering the ocean can prove fatal to sea turtles, if one of them were to accidentally ingest one, mistaking it for a jellyfish. A little creative use of coffee filters and washable markers along with a few spritzes of water gave first graders a hands-on idea of the various landforms on our planet as they showed off their beautiful planet Earth projects. Reading books on the earth, water, soil, trees, pollution and endangered animals rounded out their appreciation of our planet and all of its natural resources we count as blessings.

DDI’s Day Programs serve adults with developmental disabilities and autism at seven

locations throughout Suffolk County.
