Pennies Add Up been selected for display in the prestigious Long Island’s Best: Young Artists exhibition at the Heckscher Museum. Only a small percentage of works submitted for consideration are selected from private and public high schools in Nassau and Suffolk counties. Natalie’s photograph will be displayed at the museum until April 19th. The district congratulates Natalie on this outstanding accomplishment.

Babylon Memorial Grade School’s student council coordinated a multiweek community service initiative to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The program, called Pennies for Patients,
was a service learning, character education and philanthropy program that afforded students the chance to make a difference by working to provide aid to those fighting blood cancers like leukemia. During the initiative,
the students collected monitory donations from family and friends and charted their progress on a school chart. As a result of the participant’s generosity, the school raised $2,100.

Senior Of The Year Yolanda “Bunny” Tagliaferri, a 92 year-old North Babylon resident who consistently finds the time and energy to help her fellow seniors, has been named District 17 Senior Citizen of the Year by Suffolk County Legislator Lou D’Amaro. Bunny has been an active and visible presence at the Spangle Drive Senior Center in North Babylon since 1988, when she was elected Secretary. Within a short time, she was elected President of the Senior Center, a position she still holds today. In
addition to her leadership role, Bunny regularly visits seniors in need, assisting them in any way necessary – from driving them to doctor appointments to bringing them food or picking up medications. In nominating her for the award, Spangle Drive Senior Center Director Lauren Van Kirk noted how Bunny has been a true role model, inspiring young and old with her kindness, spirit and dedication. Legislator D’Amaro presented Bunny with a Suffolk County Proclamation at the

In The Mood By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As a former student of psychology, I am continuously fascinated by those factors which cause a person’s mood to drastically change from one moment to the next, often with no discernable explanation. One minute, happy, positive energy; the next, sullen, negative bitterness. It’s enough to make your head spin. Of course, there are a million factors that could possibly contribute to such sudden alterations in behavior; but, if you’re like me, you immediately look for the root of the problem. Is it my fault? Did I do something, say something, unknowingly
cause some perceived slight…what? Chances are, it’s something else entirely. (Read: Everything is not always about you!) The thing is, when you’re in a foul frame of mind, it’s difficult to see beyond the black cloud. Best everyone stay out of your way until the storm has passed, as you can’t be held accountable for your tone, whether impatient, annoyed, indifferent… in short, anything but friendly. Negativity breeds more negativity, and those who dare to cross paths with those in such a state are just asking for trouble. And so the cycle continues. Day after day of trying to dodge the slings and arrows of those who
would bring you down to their level, if you let them. It’s an effort, to be sure, to block out and continue on your merry way. But what other choice do we have? There comes a point when you need to avoid being sucked into the cycle. I often envy those who seem to exude nothing but positive vibes, who appear to be in a constant state of contentment. Is it genuine? How do they achieve such a mentality and, better yet, maintain it continuously? I suppose, even if it is merely a means of keeping up appearances, such a skill should be applauded. Fake it ‘til you make it, as they say. Perhaps they should hold a class on that.

Forty-one Babylon Junior-Senior High School students qualified to compete at this year’s New York State DECA Career Competition, where they performed extremely well against more than 3,000 other students. During the event, the students showcased their skills in such areas as travel and tourism, retail merchandising and personal financial literacy. As a result of their demonstrated skills, 12 students placed in the top 10 in their respective categories, with some winning multiple honors. Students, parents and community members converged on West Babylon Senior High School on March 25th for the second annual Social-Emotional Health Awareness Night. Presenters included students, district staff members, members of the West Babylon community
and representatives from various Long Island mental health organizations. Topics varied from “ADHD: Strategies for Success” to “Social Media: CyberAwareness for Parents,” along with many others. Representatives from several mental health organizations greeted
visitors in the lobby, and student tour guides helped them find program locations throughout the building. While parents attended workshops, children were in the auditorium watching Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No-Good, Very Bad Day.
Student Scientists Babylon High School juniors Jack Corcoran, Ryan Cosgro and Mike Logan showcased their original research as they competed in this year’s New York State Science and Engineering Fair. This was the students’ first time competing at the state-level Intel affiliated
competition, where participants come from all across the New York. The students presented their independent research projects to professional scientists from academics and industrial fields. The projects covered a variety of topics, from observing how chemical pollutants

Student-Artists Scholarship Award during the Long Island’s Best: Young Artists reception. Her work was also selected for display at Marshs Department Store in Huntington Village during May for its illustration of the close ties between art and fashion. Anna Fleury and Kelly Obrycki were selected to attend Adelphi University’s “For the Love of Art” Art Foundations Program, where they will take a life drawing course. This past fall, Alexandra Capobianco
and Jessica Capobianco were selected to attend the same workshop. In addition, Antonino Quintalino was awarded a first-place $5,000 annual scholarship to Dowling College. To apply for the scholarship, Antonio created a digital reimagination of a master artwork. Antonino has accepted the scholarship offer and looks forward to continuing his education at Dowling.
