ocal officials recently came together to commend members of North Babylon’s Robert Moses Middle School Environmental Recycling Club for collecting hundreds of sneakers to be recycled as part of Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe program. The students conducted a week-long sneaker drive to collect the used athletic shoes, which were then presented to representatives from Nike’s Deer Park store location.

In the gym, the classes represented different Nordic countries and took part in three winter Olympic-themed events – slalom skiing using scooters and cones, cross-country skiing using beanbags on their feet and foam sticks for poles, and a two-man bobsled using scooters and hulahoops. Decorative posters representing each of the countries blanketed the walls of the gym and a set of Olympic rings and paper torch hung in the facility. The national anthem of each of the represented countries was played at the start of the event and each student received a gold medal at the end of the program.

Are We There Yet? By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Is it safe to assume that spring has truly arrived at this point? Are we done with the random, sudden snowstorms - you know, the ones originally forecast as a 50% chance of rain? Can we begin the planting process without fear of our blossoms being petrified by the next deep freeze? One can only hope. At least baseball is back. Both New York teams seem to have great potential for success this season, assuming everyone stays healthy and on the
roster for more than a month, of course. Being a lifelong Yankees fan, the biggest attraction is the thrill of witnessing Derek Jeter’s farewell season, a celebration of a true class act. Along with the start of spring sports comes the prospect of beach weather just beyond the horizon, outdoor concerts and long, lazy afternoons spent in the warmth of the sun. Well, in an ideal world, anyway. For those of us in the workforce, the weekends are the only time to truly capitalize – and doesn’t it
always seem like it rains on those days? Of course, there’s something to be said for tackling that “spring” cleaning we’ve been putting off for the last year or so. And that closet… I don’t know about you all, but the nicer weather motivates me to do some serious shopping – if only I had room to stuff one more hanger in between the massive wardrobe collection that has taken up permanent residence. Ah, but if that’s the biggest problem, I’d say it’s shaping up to be a pretty fine spring indeed.

As part of their technology systems class, Babylon Junior High School seventhgrade students have been engaged in a new handson unit of study focused on automation. The three-week STEM-based project centers on the Lego Mindstorms program and encourages critical thinking, problem-solving skills and collaborative learning. The unit is teaching the students how to construct a robot using Legos and then design a computer program to control the robot’s movements. The students are responsible for setting commands to address the distance the device will travel, how fast it will move, how it can overcome obstacles and how it will respond to sound. “Technology classes
TOWN OF BABYLON HOME DOWN PAYMENT ASSISTANCE PROGRAM FOR FIRST TIME HOMEBUYERS NOTICE OF APPLICATION INTAKE AND WAIT LIST As part of an ongoing commitment to promote the "American Dream" of home ownership a reality for first time homebuyers who wish to reside in the Town of Babylon Supervisor, Rich Schaffer announced that the Long Island Housing Partnership (LIHP), as agent for the Town of Babylon, will be making Applicant Intake Forms available for income eligible first-time homebuyers for down payment/closing cost assistance towards the purchase of a principal residence in the Town of Babylon. The Applicant Intake Form will be used to establish a two year applicant Wait List for the receipt of down payment assistance funds. Applicants will be placed on the wait list on a first come first serve basis. The Town of Babylon will provide eligible first time homebuyers with up to $14,000 towards down payment/closing costs towards the purchase of an eligible new or existing single-family home. The applicant must put a minimum of at least $3,000 towards down payment/ closing costs, the source of this cannot be a loan. The applicant must also be able to satisfy the mortgage lender’s minimum down payment requirements and be able to secure a mortgage. Homeowners are required to reside in the home for a minimum of 5 years or HUD will require a full repayment of the grant. The home must meet and pass Town of Babylon property standards and building code prior to purchase. Homes purchased within a flood zone must have flood insurance.
Eligibility Criteria: To qualify for the program, an applicant MUST meet all the following criteria: I. First Time Homeowner - as defined by HUD is a household that has not owned a home during the three year period immediately prior to the date of application for assistance.

with interest in the subject matter are currently working with Mr. Katz during free periods to learn the material. “Student-to-student mentoring has always been a component of our program,” explained Mr. Katz. “As they become more experienced with the subject matter, students in the older grade levels volunteer their time to assist younger peers with projects and to share knowledge of subject matter. It truly lends to an enriched learning experience for both parties.” The new unit also complements several of the topics covered in the advanced courses, including the 3D modeling study in the eighth grade and the high school elective focused on manufacturing and construction.

HELPING TO CURE CANCER - West Babylon student Aidan Stukonis, a fifth-grader at Forest Avenue Elementary School, participated in a St. Baldrick’s Foundation event with members of FDNY Engine 313, Ladder 164 in Douglaston. In honor of his cousin, who has infant leukemia, Aidan shaved his head and raised $1,500 to fight childhood cancer. Students Commended Babylon High School science research students have been conducting hands-on research projects on a variety of complex topics as part of their participation in the building’s science research program. In their inaugural showing, the students earned top recognitions at several regional fairs this year. During the second round of the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair, seniors Emily Brown, Sara Mikovic and Meredith Wardell came in third place on Long Island out of 82
projects. Their independent research project studied the efficacy of apricot kernels as a natural pesticide against termites while still maintaining the growth of healthy plants. In addition to this award, seniors Jed Dale and Max Pitagno were honored with the Stockholm Junior Water Prize at LISEF for excellence in water-related research. Based on these honors, the students qualified to compete at the state level of the New York State Science and Engineering Fair. This was Babylon’s
first time competing at the state-level Intel affiliated competition, where participants come from across the state. “I am extremely proud of the hard work and dedication of these students for not just this year, but their entire research career at Babylon,” said teacher Claire Birone. “They have been leaders in our school and have set the bar high for Babylon research. I could not be any more proud of them, regardless of the outcome of the competitions.”

Bethpage Federal Credit Union announces the recipients of its first “micro” grant program to assist music students from the North Babylon school district who will be attending Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts (www.usdan.com), the renowned summer arts day camp. The Bethpage “micro” grants will pay for the students’ many additional expenses normally associated with yearround music study that can become a stumbling block for underserved families. As part of the grant program, Bethpage will also provide full 2014 summer program scholarships for Usdan Center’s 47th season, which begins June 30th. Town of Babylon Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez recently joined with New York State Assemblyman Robert Sweeney to commend members of North Babylon’s Robert Moses Middle School Environmental Recycling Club for collecting hundreds of sneakers to be recycled as part of Nike’s “Reuse-a-Shoe” program. The students conducted a week-long sneaker drive to collect the used athletic shoes which were then presented to representatives from Nike’s Deer Park store location. As part of the “Reusea-shoe” program, Nike collects used sneakers and recycles rubber, foam and fabric from the shoes to be used in basketball courts, tennis courts, running tracks, playgrounds and soccer fields, as well as apparel. The Environmental Recycling Club took up this initiative as part of Global Youth Service Day, which is a worldwide celebration of community service and civic engagement.
