The musical, which was directed by theatre teacher Lisa Drance, was based on the novel by Patrick Dennis and the play Auntie Mame by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee. Years later, when his parents passed away, Father Vinny had his mother’s diamond engagement ring and his father’s wedding band welded into the chalice to remember their love and support as he entered the priesthood. He uses this chalice only for special Masses, such as Christmas Day. Father Vinny also showed the youngsters all of the different types of clothing a priest wears to celebrate various services. He showed

students the wine and the hosts that are blessed for the Eucharist and he took them behind the altar into a room where their vestments are kept. The children enjoyed getting a hands-on overview where they could pass around the various vessels used and have an up-close look at the vestments used during the Mass. Many thanks to Father Vinny for a special tour and for sharing such beautiful insight into all that goes into bringing a Mass to fruition.

Babylon Junior-Senior High School students performed the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical “Carousel” before packed audiences this March. The students rehearsed the Broadway hit since early January under the direction of BHS alumnus

Derek Kinnear. Attendees were entertained as the cast portrayed the comedic story of a traveling carnival man and his unexpected love, a local factory worker in town. On the evening before the show’s opening, the school’s Leo Club

Spin On The Carousel hosted its annual dinner and theater event for community senior citizens. Club members served a tasty dinner for attendees before escorting them to a complimentary showing of the production. On March 20th and 21st, the North Babylon High School Drama Club’s theatrical production of Mame was presented to school and community members. The musical, which was directed by theatre teacher Lisa Drance, was based

on the novel by Patrick Dennis and the play Auntie Mame by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee. Under musical director Larry Wurtzel and orchestra director Jay Orig, cast members performed several hits, such as “St. Bridget,”

Alzheimer’s Education On March 26th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) hosted its 11th Annual Education Conference and Expo 2015 “Caring with a New Perspective” to provide attendees with important information about Alzheimer’s disease from discussion panels, breakout sessions, and a keynote discussion that featured restaurateur B. Smith and her husband, radio host Dan Gasby and moderated by Christine Geed, Communications Director, Office of New York State Senator Phil Boyle.

The annual Education Conference & Expo opened up with an introduction by Mary Ann MalackRagona, Executive Director/ CEO, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc., and a caregiver discussion panel moderated by Ellen Tolle, RN, MPS, Instructor, ADRC. Throughout the day, more than 400 guests received research updates from Dr. Scott Noggle, Director of the New York Stem Cell Foundation Laboratory and the NYSCF-Charles Evans Senior Research Fellow for Alzheimer’s Disease. Eileen Kane-Gemmell, MPA, RDN,

CDN, Registered Dietitian/ Nutritionist, Visiting Nurse Service & Hospice of Suffolk, talked about the nutritional challenges faced by those with Alzheimer’s disease or those who are cognitively impaired. Robin Marks, Long Island Regional Director, Amber Court Assisted Living, discussed the benefits of the Medicaid-funded assisted living program. Richard Mollot, Executive Director, Long Term Care Community Coalition, explained the laws and regulations that support resident-centered care and how one can care

for someone with dementia without drugs. Members of ADRC’s Legal Advisory Committee presented a special session titled “Planning for Long-Term Care through the Various Stages of Alzheimer’s Disease - Saving the family Home.” During the keynote discussion, Ms. Smith and Mr. Gasby shared with the audience the challenges they faced when Ms. Smith was diagnosed with earlyonset Alzheimer’s disease. They talked about the first time he noticed she had the disease, how it affected

their marriage and how they are attempting to get elected officials to provide more federal funding for research, as well as funding for programs and services to help support the many local families who are coping with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. In addition, because of the high incidence rate of Alzheimer’s disease in the African-American population, Mr. Gasby stressed the need for more participation in clinical trials. After the keynote, guests enjoyed more breakout sessions, an ice cream

social, and a plenary session featuring motivational speaker Jim Ryan. The conference was hosted by the Lillian & Mark Lane Alzheimer’s Disease Education Center®.
