Now, only one week remains ‘til the big day – and I’m still wrestling with what, exactly, I have to offer this group of impressionable young minds, all at the point in their lives where they are desperately trying to do exactly what my title suggests – discover that passion which will drive them into a particular field, hopefully to stay, for a long and fulfilling career. I guess a good starting point would be the initial inspiration for my topic, a letter I received from a local reader many months ago, in response to a column I had recently published, stating: “I wanted to let you know that indeed your words were read and inspired someone… as a humble writer myself, I know that is all we really want after all.” Creative Engagement at its best, no? Just the knowledge that my words had reached someone is some of the most positive feedback one can receive.
This is not to say that we all need constant pats on the back in order to feel valued and successful (although some certainly do). It simply reaffirms the notion that what we do for a living should be more than a job; it should reach far beyond the scope of merely being a means to an end, a way to pay the bills, etc. Above all else, it should engage YOU. If others find a similar connection through you, so much the better, an added bonus. I still don’t know exactly what I will say once I step to the head of the classroom a little over a week from now. But I suppose a good starting point is simply speaking openly and honestly and attempting to make a connection. And if I can reach even one person and help them discover his/her own passion in life, I will consider it a success.

Dictionary Project Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently joined with Councilman Tom Donnelly for the launch of the Babylon Rotary Club’s Dictionary Project at William E. DeLuca Jr. Elementary School in North Babylon. As part of the Dictionary Project, third-graders at the North Babylon elementary school will receive dictionaries, thesauruses and grammar usage guides. The event also served as a tribute to the memory of former Rotary President, and namesake of the school, William E. DeLuca Jr. At the event, Supervisor
Schaffer and Councilman Donnelly presented William E. DeLuca III of West Babylon’s Strahl & Pitsch, who serves as the project’s corporate sponsor, with an official Town Proclamation in honor of his father and for his organization’s contribution. The Dictionary Project is a nationwide initiative to encourage students to increase their reading and writing skills while learning critical thinking skills by providing them with their own personal dictionaries and reference materials. The materials are usually
distributed in the third grade due to that being the age when students are taught to use the dictionary and begin to read for knowledge. The initiative, led by local businesses and community organizations, has distributed dictionaries to over 18 million children nationwide since the start of the program in 1995. The Babylon Rotary Dictionary Project Committee will be distributing the same materials to all third grade students in the remaining schools within the North Babylon School District in the coming weeks.

Babylon High School’s DECA chapter competed in the 54th Annual DECA State Career Conference in Rochester this winter and was recognized with several awards. The high school was one of only 10 schools from across the state to receive the prestigious Community Service Recognition Award. Five students were awarded New York State DECA Honor Society status and 13 students received individual awards. The chapter earned the community service recognition based on the team’s efforts in raising $500 for Relay for Life, the DECA-appointed charity of the year. Membership into the NYS DECA Honor Society required the students – Jayne Dittmeier, Daniel Lum, Emma Rende, Matthew Steffanata and Matthew Taggart – to attend two or more state competitions and exhibit exemplary performance in business classes.

in Deer Park, recently cooked and served approximately 200 Parishioners on March 2nd at Ss. Cyril & Methodius in Deer Park. The pasta and meatball dinner was part of a Parish Mardi Gras celebration as part of the Lenten season. The event was organized by Father Vincent Schifano and Family Life member Anne Marie D’Attoma. The committee reached out to the Knights to purchase, cook and serve the pasta dinner. Parishioners also enjoyed music, games and dancing as provided by the committee. The Squires from the Knights of Columbus helped serve all the guests.
HIBERNIAN OF THE YEAR - On Saturday night March 15th, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey, honored A.O.H Division 2 Hibernian of the Year Cormac Gerrity at Division 2’s Annual St. Patrick’s Ball. Cormac Gerrity has been a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians since he was 16 years old, serving in numerous different roles including becoming the youngest President of Division 2 at the age of 27. For all he has done through is over 25 years of membership Cormac Gerrity was chosen as 2014 Hibernian of the Year.
