However, this all changed when one group of people fixed the problem. The Hittites, a group of people who lived in modernday Turkey, created extremely durable iron weapons and tools. The iron they used quickly spread throughout the Middle East. Not only was iron durable, but it was also inexpensive. It is evident that iron has a tremendous influence on our society today. Iron can be found in fences and buildings. Additionally, the Mesopotamians are responsible for shipbuilding. Shipbuilding enabled them to have long-distance trade. The group of people in Mesopotamia who were responsible for shipbuilding was the Phoenicians. One place they went to for trading was Harappa, which is located by the Indus River, Egypt, Lebanon and Persia, which was

located in modern-day Iran, Arabia and Anatolia, which is located in modern-day Turkey. In our society, we clearly use ships to facilitate trade as well. Shipbuilding is still a very important part of our society today. One major invention of the Mesopotamians was alphabetic writing. The Phoenicians, by approximately 1500 B.C.E, created alphabetic writing. The Phoenician alphabet consisted of 22 consonants. Their system of writing was much more efficient than the earlier cuneiform writing because it was difficult to remember many different symbols. With the Phoenician alphabet, you could build words with letters, which made it much easier for the population to learn how to write. Many of the languages spoken today have Phoenician roots, including English.

Of Snow & Spring & Savoring It All By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Spring has arrived. Sort of. As I write this column, snow is accumulating at quite a pace, ushering in the start of the new season in much the same manner as the last one began. I suppose it’s fitting that Long Island should be blanketed by white once more before finally (hopefully) giving way to the first blossoms. It’s funny, no matter how many seasons we are fortunate to enjoy here in the northeast, there are always those detractors who seem dissatisfied with the variety of weather. The seasons are too long, too hot, too cold, whatever. Imagine if we all lived in an area of extreme

fluctuations, from 100º days to 8 feet of snow at a clip. I think I speak for everyone when I say, no thank you. Of the four seasons, I would have to say spring is my favorite. It’s the perfect combination of sun and flowers and that lovely light breeze that keeps everything just right. Summer is still right over the horizon, winter is firmly in the rearview mirror and nature is in full flourishing mode. What more could you ask for? Well, other than a few more feet of snow to play in – but I assume even the biggest fans of winter outdoor activities have probably had their fill by now. Plus, for those of us interested in the “spring cleaning” aspect of things, it’s

the ideal time to reorganize – closets, junk drawers, piles of paperwork, life as a whole… to take stock and give everything a good, old-fashioned refresh. It’s amazing the cobwebs you find when you take a moment to stop and take inventory, mentally and otherwise. So, to all, enjoy the season. All of them. Each one is only three months long, just enough to savor the nuances without becoming too encumbered by the flaws. Sure, April will most likely bring the usual array of showers; but remember, May, in all its glory, is just around the corner. Everyone has a preference. Regardless, we should all make a point of enjoying each and every day.

GYMNASTICS ASSEMBLY - Fourth through eighth graders at Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park delighted the student body, teachers, staff and families with a terrific array of gymnastics performances at their Gymnastics Assembly in the SSCM gymnasium last week. Tumbles, flips, teamwork and an excellent display of collaboration and creativity was demonstrated and in working on their routines for the past two months, students also managed to get a healthy dose of exercise, strength training and flexibility, all while having fun along the way.

The Adult and Young Boaters Public Safe Boating Course will be offered this spring by the United States Power Squadron – America’s Boating Club. America’s Boating Course will be offered at the Long Island Yacht Club, 307 Little East Neck Road in Babylon, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays, April 11th and 18th, with an optional class on April 25th covering basic coastal navigation skills. Pre-registration for the first 30 students will be online at: www.gsbps.org and link to “GSB Public Course Schedule.” Inperson registration will take place on the first class date, beginning 30 minutes before the start of the class. The Adult and Young Boaters (from 10 years old and up) Safe Boating Course will be covering the following topics:

• Will receive the required certificate to operate a power boat in New York for under 18 year olds. • Certificate is earned, which is required to operate a boat in New Jersey waters and in waters of other states requiring a boating “license.” The instruction given in the Boating Course is the best way to learn the basics of safe boating, for new, as well as experienced boaters. Ashley Beck, a student at Parliament Place Elementary School in North Babylon, was recently nominated to participate in the National Youth Leadership Forum Pathways to STEM. Ashley was nominated by her art teacher, Ms. Renee Blank. This was a very exciting honor and her family is proud to announce this wonderful accomplishment. Outstanding, elementary school students from across the nation will take part in a unique academic development experience, the National Youth Leadership Forum (NYLF): Pathways to STEM. Held on campuses across the country, the forum

inspires students in grades 3-5 to explore life as an engineer, a doctor or a detective! “This is a great opportunity for highachieving scholars to get outside the classroom and see, through handson interactive learning, how to innovate and think creatively, said Marguerite Regan, Ph.D., the Dean of Academic Affairs for NYLF Pathways to STEM. “These students, who have already proven themselves academically, are challenged to work on real-world, studentcreated projects to bring their studies to life.” Students who attend the program study engineering, medicine and forensic science in a journey that introduces them to potential college and career paths. Simulation and roleplaying exercises also introduce them to teambuilding, problem-solving, presentation skills and goal-setting, all of which are essential for success in the 21st century.

Babylon High School National Art Honor Society members helped create personal mementos for orphans living in Ghana through the nationally run Memory Project. As part of their participation in the project, the students created portraits for children based on photographs provided through the organization.

As a commemorative thank you, the artists will receive a photograph of the recipients displaying the artwork in their hometown. The idea behind the Memory Project is to provide children who do not have many personal belongings a lasting, positive memento from their childhood. The

In celebration of Dental Health Month, Babylon Elementary School students learned about the importance of daily brushing and proper techniques through a series of activities. All grade levels attended a presentation with dentist Dr. Anad, which was provided through the Kid

Island Dental Presentation. She reinforced the importance of the topic, spoke about tooth health and presented each student with a toothbrush. As part of their curriculum, kindergarten students furthered their understanding of the subject by discussing the difference between healthy

Babylon Junior-Senior High School marked World Languages week from March 9th-13th with a series of interactive activities. A different language was featured during the weeklong celebration and daily announcements were made either in that dialectal or facts about countries speaking that language were shared. Within the school’s foreign language classes, teachers coordinated spirited

projects correlating to the featured language. Recognizing the benefits of having an early exposure to a foreign language, the high school teachers visited the sixth-grade classes at Babylon Memorial Grade School to host a workshop. Following the theme of the week – “Learn A Foreign Language, Gain A New Perspective” – the group completed an activity called the “Man On The Moon.” The students first

learned how to speak in either Italian or Spanish and several key phrases in the target language, including the colors, facial features and the numbers 1-10. DeMarco stopped by the Knights of Columbus in Ronkonkoma on Thursday, March 12th, to visit with volunteers for the Long Island Chapter of The Giving Doll and to pick up fifty dolls made for the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office’s Domestic Violence Unit. The dolls will be given out by Deputy Sheriffs at the Central Islip Courthouse to children whose parents or guardians are seeking Orders of Protection in Family Court. “Unfortunately, we see many young children come through our Domestic

I’m very grateful for the donation and I know the dolls will help lift the spirits of the children and the parents during an otherwise very stressful time,” said Sheriff DeMarco. The New York School Bus Contractors Association announced today that the Association will host a School Bus Safety Demonstration Day in collaboration with Suffolk Region PTA on Wednesday, March 25th at Suffolk Transportation Service’s Safety and Training Center located on 50 Saxon Avenue in Bay Shore. The event will help parents and school officials better understand the safety features on today’s modern school bus, as well as, the safety training procedures and requirements that school bus drivers must undergo before getting behind the wheel of a school bus. school each day for over one million children in New York,” said New York School Bus Contractors Association President, Bob Pape. “The safety demonstrations event will bring New York’s premier School Bus safety experts together to share their knowledge and skills, along with our industries best practices, with parents and school officials from across the region.” There will be two sessions containing the same program, one from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and another from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Each demonstration session will start with an introduction on how school bus drivers are screened and selected, along with driver training and qualification requirements. Participants will then get to experience the actual school bus driver training by going through five separate school bus safety stations, each focusing on a different aspect of safe pupil transportation. The safety aspects

covered will include school bus stop arms, on-board video cameras and student management on and off the bus, child check safety procedures and motion detectors, school bus evacuation procedures and a drivers physical performance test. There will also be information discussions regarding school bus safety legislation and advocacy. “At the end of the session all participants will have a greater understanding of what it takes to keep our children safe on or near a school bus, and the things we can all do to improve student and school bus safety,” said Pape. “School Bus Safety Demonstration Day will also help us to continue to do what we do best provide among the safest pupil transportation services in the country.” The event is also supported by Suffolk New York Association for Pupil Transportation, Suffolk Transportation Services, Inc., WE Transport, Towne Bus, and Huntington Coach Corp.
