Showcasing Student Art On Friday, March 7th, over forty high school artists will have their work on exhibit at the Main Street Petite Gallery as part of the Huntington Arts Council’s High Arts Showcase X. Seven school districts that participate in the Council’s JOURNEY Arts in Education program have submitted “the best of the best” work from their top high school student artists. The JOURNEY school districts are: Commack, Harborfields, Huntington, North Babylon, Northport/ East Northport, Plainview/ Old Bethpage, and South
Huntington. The public is invited to the exhibit’s opening reception on Friday, March 7th from 6 to 8 p.m. at The Main Street Petite Gallery, located at 213 Main Street, Huntington. Flashback To Today By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There seems to be an obsession lately, especially on social networking sites, with “flashbacks” and “throwbacks” to times that, in hindsight, were happier and simpler. These moments are shared in the form of photos, videos, reminiscences of milestones and markers, all subtle indications that, for whatever reason, we are not overly happy in the now. But what of the present day? Some would contend that, to borrow from Billy Joel, this is the time to
remember (cause it will not last forever…la, la, la). And they would be correct. Difficult as it may be to step back and appreciate our current situation, whatever it may be, we may find that it was quite ideal in hindsight. No one knows what the next year, or month, or week, or even day, will bring. And there’s really not much sense dwelling on this vast unknown, as much of it is beyond our control. The important things, like family and friends and health and happiness… unfortunately, we can only do so much to maintain our little bubble

Only two weeks remain to nominate young volunteers for the Kohl’s Cares Scholarship Program. Kids ages six to 18 who have made a positive impact on their communities can be awarded scholarships

Project Advances An original research project created by Babylon High School seniors Emily Brown, Sara Mikovic and Meredith Wardell has advanced to the second round of the Intel-level Long Island Science and Engineering Fair, to be held this March. The students’ project, “The effect of apricot kernels, a proven natural
pesticide, on the growth of Phaseolus vulgarius & Cynodon dactylon,” competed in the elite competition against more than 400 other student projects. Based on their performance at the March 13 LISEF, the students’ project could advance to the Intel Science and Engineering Fair in April. In addition, seniors Jed
Dale and Max Pitagno also entered their project, “The bioremediation of 1,1,1,2-Tetrafluoroethane (R-134a) by Scendesmus sp. as facilitated by Titanium Dioxide & activated charcoal.” This was Babylon’s first time competing at this level of LISEF.

Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer and Councilman Lindsay P. Henry recently honored Matthew J. Cardali of North Babylon for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest honor in scouting. A ceremony was hosted at West Islip Church of Christ to recognize Matthew’s achievement in gaining this rank. Matthew is a member of Boy Scout Troop 95 of the Sagtikos District. Matthew’s Eagle Project was to install a shed for the West Islip Church of Christ’s nursery school, which included clearing the land and putting the shed together with a wooden floor. To fund the project, Matthew supervised a carwash at the church.
