SENIOR VOCALIST - West Babylon Senior High School senior Samantha Lobasso participated in the Carnegie Hall Honors Performance Series in New York City on February 7th. She was one of 141 students chosen out of about 4,500 students who applied to sing with the choir. In order to be chosen for the performance, Lobasso was required to video record herself singing a classical piece and send it to the committee. Just last weekend, I took the time to stroll along two of our pristine Long Island beaches – one on the outskirts of Northport, and the other out on the North Fork. Sure, it was a bit brisk and barren; but just to experience the fresh sea air, to feel the sand beneath my (sneakered) feet, to gaze out onto the crystal blue Long Island Sound… there is something to be said for venturing outside and exploring. That said, it would’ve been nice to have maybe just a couple more snow days to vegetate with a clear conscience, to stay under the covers and catch up on Netflix. The one true “blizzard” was exactly that, one and done, over a weekend. Kind of a waste. The rest of the “snow

Successful STEM The West Babylon School District held its second annual STEM Night on February 11th at the Senior High School, featuring dozens of handson activities, experiments, games, mini-labs and more. The evening gave students in grades K-8 and their families an opportunity to spark their interest in the STEM fields. Under the direction of West Babylon Senior High
School science teacher Aimee Mendoza, the West Babylon Senior High School Math and Science Honor Society, National Technology Honor Society and Science Club coordinated and presented the activities. Kicking off the evening with a “Fire and Ice” assembly by Mad Science, visitors had the chance to engage in a variety of activities. The cafeteria

featured arts and crafts and a petting zoo, while the gym housed a technology showcase including demonstrations by the Robotics Club. Up on the third floor of the school, students toured 28 different rooms, with activities ranging from cotton candy polymers to slime time to butterfly symmetry.

Black History Month
The Town of Babylon Department of Human Services recently presented “Hallowed Ground: Sites of African American Memory” in celebration of Black History Month. The event honored several members of the community and featured a keynote address by Suffolk County District Court Judge Derrick Robinson. Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer was joined by Town Councilwoman Jackie Gordon, Town Councilman Tom Donnelly, Town
Clerk Carol Quirk, and Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey in congratulating the honorees. The following awards were given out to members of the Town community: • The Unity Award: Regina Arvon, Probation Officer (Ret.) and Rosemarie Dearing, Community Organizer • The Economics Award: Richelieu Dennis, Founder and CEO, Sundial Brands • The Special

in a fish bowl and 100 pom-poms on a cupcake representing sprinkles. Students also enjoyed a classroom hunt for one hundred Hershey’s Kisses. Each chocolate was numbered, so once a student found a kiss, he or she placed it on the 100Day chart. Once all of the treats were placed, it was time for the math fun to begin! Students used division to distribute the chocolates
equally among their classmates. Each student ended up with five pieces of candy and the class had a remainder of fifteen to share with teachers and staff. The class also read A Hundred Ways to Celebrate 100 Days and got their bodies moving by pumping out 100 jumping jacks and hopping on one foot 100 times.

Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently joined Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and New York State Assemblyman Andrew Raia at the 80th Annual North Babylon Volunteer Fire Company Installation Dinner. The North Babylon Volunteer Fire Company
was called upon 3,491 times in 2015, making it the second-busiest fire department in the Town of Babylon, according to Department Chief Robert Cabano. Several fire company awards were distributed at the dinner, including the Chief Francis J. Noonan Award, received by Ex-
Captain Thomas Stoltz, and the Chief William Scarangella Award, received by Ex-Chief Brian Iudica. Supervisor Schaffer congratulated the recipients on their achievements and thanked them for their service to the community.
