Geared toward parents with children at the secondary level, the Feb. 1 program kicked off with a presentation about the dangers and consequences of social media usage. Suffolk County Police Department Detective Daniel Fandrey of the Computer Crimes Unit and the Long Island Crime Against Children Task Force, is an expert in the field of internet and computer crimes. He informed parents about the laws regarding photos posted and shared, inappropriate texting and cyberbullying. Additionally, he spoke about the various social media apps that are a cause of concern for student/child safety and tips to deal with bullying. Following Fandrey’s informative lecture, parents were invited to take part in a series of workshops to further enhance their understanding of internet safety and the usage of online tools accessible from home.

Hope Children’s Fund is an international non-profit that operates with the motto “Education Is Key.” For children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family...hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem. In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. If you would like to be part of another one of their success stories, you can! There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance
