Season Of Extremes By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Is it spring yet? Are we done with the endless parade of winter storms, bringing their onslaught of rain and sleet and slush and snow and ice and all that fun stuff? I know there are those who absolutely LOVE this season and all its wondrous whiteness, but seriously… enough is enough, don’t you think? Over the last several months, our lives have been literally consumed by national weather forecasts, a succession of storms with oh-so-cute names, a lifetime supply of rock salt

and sand, mad rushes to the store for milk and eggs and bread (you know, for all those “milk” sandwiches you make while snowed in!) and the fabulous process of shoveling, cleaning the car off, shoveling the new mound of icy boulders generously distributed by the plows… and on and on and on. Oh, and that’s before we attempt the treacherous process of actually driving anywhere. Like I said, is it spring yet? So many have said that, this year, after the winter we’ve had, they promise not to complain about the heat. 90º and humid?

Awesome, sign me up! Torrential downpours and thunderstorms? At least we won’t have to shovel! Stay tuned. Guaranteed, the first heat wave we experience, all that will go out the window. Too much of anything is irritating, especially when it disrupts our daily routine. A little here and there – sure, we can all deal with that. But this winter has been one of extremes. Of course, as I write these words, the forecast is calling for 50º next week. Time to break out the tank tops and shorts; but better keep that shovel handy!

Safe Boating Courses

National Science Bowl students were challenged to answer a series of questions pertaining to all areas of science and mathematics. Teams of four students faced off in a fast-paced question-andanswer format, testing their understanding of science topics including biology, chemistry, earth science, physics, energy and math. The event encouraged students’ involvement in

math and science activities of importance to the Department of Energy and the nation. The team competed well in their inaugural showing, but unfortunately did not qualify to move on to the national round. This year’s team was coached by Babylon science research teacher Claire Birone.

WARMING UP WINTER - Babylon Elementary School students, faculty and staff helped to warm up the winter months for those in need by organizing a schoolwide Coat and Outerwear Supply Drive. During the event, the school collected several boxes of gently used coats, hats, gloves and scarves for local families and St. Joseph’s Church in Babylon. Thanks to the overwhelming support of the initiative, addition coats were donated to the NY Cares annual coat drive.

Jeans For Dreams Setting a positive example for the building’s young students, Babylon Elementary School teachers and staff have been raising funds for various charities each month through an initiative called Jeans for Dreams. During this annual tradition, staff members donate money to

wear jeans on Fridays. At the end of the month, the collected funds are donated to a different charity. Past organizations include those assisting with MS, breast cancer, juvenile disabilities, cystic fibrosis and autism research. This February, the school dedicated their

addressing leadership, teamwork and gracious professionalism displayed by the student • An essay from the student addressing community activities in which he/she participated and how the scholarship will influence his/her career goals • Enrollment in one of Farmingdale State College’s four-year programs: mathematics, science, engineering technology or computer systems In order to continue

Superintendent To Retire

The West Babylon Union Free School District Board of Education accepted the resignation for the purposes of retirement of Superintendent of Schools Anthony Cacciola, effective January 10th, 2015, during the February 11th Board of Education meeting. Board of Education President Diane Thiel said, “Tony is a true West Babylon success story and full-blooded Eagle. His selfless leadership

and his expertise in finances have always been directed toward meeting the best interests of the community while offering the most opportunities for our students. His lifelong commitment to his home community is an irreplaceable resource that we are truly saddened to be losing. We thank him for all he has given to West Babylon and we know that he takes with him the knowledge and spirit that, near or far, he remains an Eagle.” Mr. Cacciola, a graduate of West Babylon Senior High School, accepted his first position as custodian for the district when he was in 10th grade in 1976. He worked his way through the department as head custodian, chief custodian and asbestos compliance officer, as

well as superintendent of buildings and grounds before taking on the role of school business administrator in 1993. In 1995, Mr. Cacciola became the assistant to the superintendent for finance, a position he held for five years until he became the assistant superintendent for finance. In 2007, Mr. Cacciola was named superintendent of schools for the district. In his letter to the Board of Education, Mr. Cacciola said, “The district is not a place where I work. It’s my home, my life. The past 38 years have been rewarding and memorable. The friends, colleagues and associates I have come to know are countless and many will always be a part of my life, but I am ready to begin a new chapter in my life.”
