Broken Lines By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Used to be, if you wanted to get in touch with someone, you picked up the phone and called. If you couldn’t reach them immediately, you left a message – either on an answering machine or with another person associated with them – and then waited patiently for a return call. Tedious, right? So why is it that, these days, with every gadget and method of communicating imaginable, it seems more difficult than ever to actually, you know, communicate?
Between cell phones and texting and social media, there are more ways to reach friends and family – and even complete strangers – than ever before. Everyone has at least one gadget easily accessible at all times, and yet how often do you find yourself waiting hours (or days) for a response? That is, if one ever comes. It seems odd to think that communication could almost be made too easy, but that is precisely what has occurred. With the constant influx of e-mails, texts, photo and video messages, Facebook and Instagram notifications
and, oh yeah, actual missed calls and voicemails, I suppose the easiest course of action for some is to simply “ignore all” and move on. Too bad there are those of us on the receiving end of that dismissive approach – people who, for all our technology and gadgets, actually yearn for that human connection in the form of a personal acknowledgement that said communication was received, processed, appreciated for what it was worth and responded to appropriately. Student Spotlight
MUSIC’S PLACE IN THE DIGITAL AGE I have a deeply ingrained love for music, particularly listening to new things and looking further into the artists I find interesting. Unfortunately, what I have noticed as a high school freshman is that I often struggle to find people to share discoveries with who are willing to explore new musical grounds. The general trend seems to be that young people don’t recognize music as a main focal point in their lives like past generations have. Instead, the idea of immersing oneself in this highly spiritual, universal experience is being practiced less, which is evidenced by many of my peers. On countless occasions, my parents have recounted their time in high school with stories that can all be drawn back to a mutual appreciation for music.

Although not all friendships were rooted in their love for the same bands or genres (but many were), people could always find a way to relate to one another through this medium. When people my age find themselves without something to talk about, discussion about a new favorite tune is hardly ever even considered. It is easier to simply default to social media or other means of digital distraction to break the tension. There is also an astounding lack of devotion to artists nowadays. With the advent of streaming services like Pandora and Spotify, individual songs are played on stations created by the user. Allowing unfavorable songs to be skipped and offering unlimited access to an endless list of tracks gives young people no reason to purchase a musician’s entire
album. To constantly browse through fragments of what is really a large cohesive work does a great disservice to the listener. In order to allow yourself to grow with the artist, you must see the whole picture. This develops a story that can be interpreted differently for anyone and is what should drive people to become engrossed in other similar compositions. A fast paced society is creating a youth who undervalue music and cannot fully appreciate it. We are neglecting many opportunities for expanding our knowledge of the world of music and are failing to forge lasting bonds with others within it. While this may be very disheartening, popular culture can embrace new ideas very rapidly, providing some hope for fully inviting music into our lives.

Babylon High School’s Marine Science class has been using the technology resources at their fingertips as they study the basic principles of oceanography and marine biology. As part of the course, students have been learning about the community’s local marine ecosystems and conduct over 12 handson marine organism dissections, analyze real data and study the
dynamics between humans and marine organisms/ ecosystems. This year, they are digitalizing their work using the district’s Chromebooks and Google Classroom module. Students are learning how to document and digitize their weekly specimen dissections, collaborate with other students using shared documents and are analyzing actual marine data from scientists around the world. They are
learning how to create and upload new documents, share documents and submit their classwork online in an almost paperless environment. Brittany finished third at the Section XI State Qualifier meet at Suffolk County Community College in Brentwood on Sunday, February 8th, running a qualifying time of 41.51 seconds. She was the only sophomore to reach the finals in this event, as the rest of the competitors were upperclassmen. On January 14th, the St. John the Baptist D.H.S. Jazz Ensemble had the great opportunity of playing with Jazz Musician Glenn Drewes. Mr. Drewes, a West Babylon native, eagerly shared his musical talent with our students. Mr. Drewes taught a master class to the students in the Jazz Ensemble led by Performing Arts Department Chair Mr. Chris Donohue. Mr. Donohue has worked together with Mr. Drewes doing clinics and workshops at Nassau Community College, Adelphi, and SUNY Purchase for their Jazz Programs. They have also have done workshops together at High Schools
around Long Island promoting Jazz Education in schools. The diverse career of Glenn Drewes has spanned the likes of jazz greats Woody Herman, Buddy Rich, Dizzy Gillespie and Mel Lewis and includes successful pop artists such as Michael Jackson, Madonna, Harry Connick Jr., David Sanborn and P. Diddy. In addition to being heard on hundreds of jingles, feature films, network award shows, and sports themes Mr. Drewes is best known for his work on Broadway and for playing on the children’s educational show Sesame Street for 20 years Mr. Donohue stated that “the students had an amazing time; they played
great, and got to listen to some incredible stories. That’s what playing jazz is all about anyway, the history of jazz is almost as important as the music. Most of these stories only continue to circulate because people like Glenn pass them on. What is funny about that is that’s exactly how the music of jazz grew, by word of mouth. For me, meeting and hearing people like Glenn as a young musician inspired me to continue to work to keep America’s true art form of jazz alive and well. I am so happy and thankful that our students have been afforded the same opportunity as I was, and I can already see and hear results.”

As part of the sixthgrade science curriculum, Babylon Memorial Grade School students are learning to build Mars rovers and navigate the creations through various situations. Using recycled material, the students are learning
about the science behind the wheeled objects through the hands-on STEM-based activity. As part of each science unit, the students are tasked with modify the rovers to complete related and relevant tasks. For example, studying physics

Town of Babylon Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and Councilman Tom Donnelly recently thanked students from Robert Moses Middle School in North Babylon for their work collecting dozens of sneakers as part of Nike’s “Reuse-a-Shoe” effort, which recycles old sneakers to use for athletic surfaces across the country. This effort was taken by the students as part of the Town of Babylon Beautification Program’s Global Youth Service Day initiative, which is
a worldwide celebration of community service and civic engagement. By taking part in this initiative, the students learned the environmental benefits of keeping sneakers out of our landfill - each sneaker takes 45 years to decompose. The students also learned that the sneakers will be recycled by Nike to manufacture basketball courts and playground surfaces for inner city kids.

Family & Children’s Association, Long Island’s leading human care agency is seeking volunteers for its new Friendly Visitors program set to begin in May. Family & Children’s Association serves nearly 9,000 seniors each year providing case management, financial counseling, health insurance counseling and other support services. They will provide training and on-going support to volunteers enabling them to provide companionship
and once-a-week visitation to a local, homebound senior. Volunteers should be able to drive to various locations within Nassau County and commit to one hour per week of socialization with their senior. Reynolds, Ph.D., “The Friendly Visitor program will add a much-needed socialization component to our cadre of services devoted to Long Island’s seniors. We assist many

They also did mini-projects on what the word “peace” means to them and ways that they feel they can promote it in their own environment. HEART HEALTH AWARENESS - In recognition of Heart Health Awareness Month, Good Samaritan Hospital hosted a free “Open Your Heart To Health” event in February, at Westfield South Shore Mall in Bay Shore. Shoppers had the opportunity to visit four health awareness stations and participate in blood pressure, cholesterol and BMI screenings. Participants received free gifts at the event which also included Zumba demonstrations, a photo booth, face painting and other children’s activities. Black History Month, or National African American History Month, is an annual celebration of achievements by black Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of African Americans in U.S. history. Students in every grade at Saints Cyril and Methodius (SSCM) School in Deer Park kicked off the start of the month by doing just that. Second graders read stories on the life and times of Martin Luther King, Jr., then wrote up passages about how each of them can help to make the world a more peaceful place. Victoria Bonavita is an 11 year-old 6th grade student attending Robert Moses Middle School in North Babylon. At the age of 10, she created a learning series called “Victoria’s Amazing Pets” for her 5th grade elementary school class. She has since
expanded her program and now volunteers her time to go to schools, libraries and other related places to teach. Victoria’s presentation includes a 30-minute film, live animals and other interactive materials for the students to experience.
As part of her work, she recently interviewed Jack Hanna and the popular children’s author and champion chicken breeder Jan Brett. Jan Brett is the author of The Mitten, as well as many other popular books with 39 million copies in print. In Victoria’s interview with Jack Hanna on February 1st, he talked about respect for animals and for each other. He also discussed his overall philosophy - “touch the heart to teach the mind” - and explained how this has guided him and how it should be applied to all aspects of life. After the interview, Victoria was given a once in a lifetime opportunity to interact with some of the animals from the Columbus Zoo that he uses in his show. She sat on the floor and played with two baby cheetahs, and was able to pet a famous penguin that was used in the making of the movie
Happy Feet, as well as hold other wild animals. Jack and his team are the very best! Victoria was thrilled to have the opportunity to interview the man that she has learned so much from throughout the many years she has been watching his TV series. Victoria began giving her presentations at the age of 10 at Belmont Elementary in North Babylon, her school at the time. While waiting for approval from the Principal to bring her birds to school, she made an educational video to show the students, in the event approval was not forthcoming. As it turned out, she received approval and gave the entire 5th grade a one hour presentation that was enjoyed by students and faculty alike. Thus, was born Victoria’s educational series “Victoria’s Amazing Pets.” As Jeannine Pernice, 5th grade teacher at Belmont
Elementary, “Victoria is an amazing young girl who truly touched my life being in my classroom. Her kind spirit and her zest for life is infectious; and for me, she helped to make my classroom a nicer place every day. I can honestly say that she took my breath away on the day she did her presentation. To see her up there speaking of the birds she loves so much for our class, I was in awe of her.” She continued, “I never saw this side of her, and to watch her so comfortable in front of her peers being so passionate about what she loved was incredible to see. I was so proud of her, and it was that day I realized that this was her calling. Every once in a while, as a teacher, you come across a student you know is going to make a difference. I believe in my heart that Victoria is one of them. So get ready world, because here she comes - and if you are lucky, she will touch your life as
well.” Victoria was recently asked to give her animal learning presentation at the Smithtown Library this coming summer. This past summer, she gave two classes for summer school students at the Bay Shore High School. The teacher, Ms. Magrane, adapted Victoria’s program as a means of interdisciplinary learning for her summer school math class. Victoria has been invited to a high school in Jamaica Queens, as well as numerous other schools this coming Spring. Victoria is available to go to schools and libraries and other related places - and the program is free.
