he Tooker Avenue Elementary School fourth-grade Student Council has begun its 2nd Annual 1,000 Bottle Project. Students have set a goal of collecting and redeeming 1,000 plastic bottles and soda cans to keep the community green and to raise money for a local charity. The school community is being urged to donate recyclables to assist in surpassing last year’s collection total of 3,000 bottles.

Human Nature? By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Let me start off by saying, accidents happen. We all have our moments of distraction on the road. Add to that, heightened tension due to weather conditions (even if said conditions don’t happen to be a factor at the time, but we’re giving the benefit of the doubt here), and the forces of human nature, mixed with Mother Nature, sometimes create catastrophic results. Where am I going with this tangent, you ask? Just a preface to my recent run-in with a fellow motorist, is all. Well, his runin with me, to be exact. At a red light. Behind a line of about 12 other vehicles. Clearly stopped. Not moving. No ice, no slush, no nothing on the road. Getting the picture? So, obviously, you can imagine my astonishment upon glancing in my rearview mirror – as I habitually do when on the roads
– to see headlights approaching at what seemed too fast for an appropriate slowdown and stop maneuver. Sure enough, there it was, the impact, the sound of car metal crunching and cracking, along with the squeal of brakes. Lovely. Just lovely. Luckily, another one of my driving habits is to leave a bit of room between the front of my car and the one in front of mine, saving me the added inconvenience of continuing the potential chain reaction of collisions. One minor crisis averted. All of this, mind you, and the light had yet to change to green. No sooner did I get my bearings, than the driver – a young, college-aged male with a knit hat – appeared at my driver’s side window to apologize profusely and ask if I was alright. I rolled down my window, clearly angry, and said, “Yeah, I’m fine, but my car sure isn’t.” He continued to apologize and suggested we
pull out of the line of traffic and into the parking lot of an office building right alongside the road. Great idea. As I pulled off to the shoulder and continued into the agreedupon lot, the light changed. Wanting to be sure I was out of the entryway (and further harm’s way), I found a spot off to the side and waited. And waited. I watched the continuous stream of traffic drive by, with no sign of the guilty party. Gone. Took off. You must be kidding. Hence the tangent. And the anger. And the feeling that, in spite of the fact that “accidents happen” from time to time and none of us is perfect, there is no excuse for not owning up to your actions after the fact. That’s just bad karma. So, to the other driver, I hope you can live with your decision to run from your mistake. May you never have the misfortune for someone to do precisely the same thing to you.

LIJSL Convention Even though New York looks like a winter wonderland with all the snow, the Spring Season of the Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) and Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) is scheduled to begin in five weeks. The traditional kick-off to the Spring Season is the LIJSL Convention, which will be held on March 6th to 8th. The LIJSL Convention is annually one of the world’s largest soccer conventions as approximately 10,000 people are once again expected to flock to the Huntington Hilton on Route 110 in Melville. “We are very enthusiastic to welcome soccer fans from around the world to

( N A P S I ) — T h e Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) found that many consumers are overwhelmed by the amount of information available to help them learn more about the financial services marketplace. At the same time, the CFPB found one of the most popular resources offered is information about credit reports. The credit bureaus have found that information about credit reports is popular as well. “Each year, there are over 25 million
free credit reports provided to consumers,” said Stuart K. Pratt, president and CEO of the Consumer Data Industry Association. “And while that’s a significant number, there are still a considerable number of consumers who aren’t exercising their option to get their report. According to a survey done by VantageScore and the Consumer Federation of America, 37 percent of consumers have never obtained a copy of their credit report,” he added. Consumers can get a free
credit report from each of the three nationwide credit bureaus, Equifax, Experian and Trans-Union, once a year by going to www. annualcreditreport.com. The process is easy and enables consumers to have real-time access to their credit reports. “Many people get annual medical checkups. We encourage consumers to be just as conscientious when it comes to their personal finances; get an annual credit checkup by obtaining your free credit report,” added Pratt.
Blood Donations Needed The American Red Cross encourages eligible donors to help ensure a sufficient and diverse blood supply by giving blood this February. Since the beginning of the year, widespread flu and inclement winter weather in some parts of the country have prevented many regular donors from making or keeping their blood donation appointments. Healthy and diverse blood donors are
needed to help maintain a sufficient blood supply. Diversity among blood donors is important because red blood cells carry markers that determine one’s blood type, and certain blood types are unique to specific racial and ethnic groups. Blood must be matched very closely for those patients with rare blood types or for those who need repeated transfusions. Patients
are less likely to have complications from blood donated by someone with a similar ethnicity. All blood types are needed, especially types O negative, A negative and B negative. There’s good news for those concerned about cholesterol and their health. They may have a new way to regulate their cholesterol level that doesn’t involve prescription drugs. Cholesterol is a naturally occurring substance in the human body. It is used to make many of our hormones, vitamin D and bile acids, which aid fat digestion and keep cell membranes intact. How much you have is based on a combination of genetics and lifestyle. However, too much LDL cholesterol—often referred to as “bad cholesterol”—can slowly build and contribute to heart disease and clogged arteries. Some will try to manage their cholesterol with diet and exercise while others will turn to prescription medications. A New Approach One of the latest approaches to managing cholesterol involves

The Youth Court oath was administered by Deputy Supervisor Martinez to the new inductees in attendance. The Town of Babylon Youth Court serves to reduce juvenile delinquency through positive peer influence
and allows first time offenders of violations or misdemeanors under the age of 16 to be heard by a jury made up of those close in age to them. The Youth Court is made up of students between the ages of 14 and 18 who have completed a multi-week training program. At a recent meeting of the Babylon Town Board, Supervisor Schaffer joined with his colleagues on the board to unanimously approve a resolution proclaiming the month of April as “Upper Limb Difference Month” to show support for families of children who were born with missing hands, fingers or arms. This resolution was passed to show encouragement for the efforts of “Unlimbited Possibilities,” an
organization that provides support and resources to families of children with upper limb differences. Members of the organization were in attendance for the meeting to celebrate the unanimous passage of the declaration. Unlimbited Possibilities is a not-for-profit corporation that was founded in 2003 and was the first upper limb difference organization on Long Island.
