Winter’s Wrath By: Jamie Lynn Ryan So, one epic snowstorm/ blizzard/”Juno” (who names these things, by the way?) into the Winter of 2015, and I’ve just about had my fill. How about you? As lovely and peaceful as a blanket of freshly fallen snow looks on the landscape, unfortunately, “snow days” only last for about one day, if that. Once the plows emerge, and the salt and sand turns the pristine landscape into a mountain range of dirty, frozen boulders, the novelty wears off pretty quickly – even faster if you are the one responsible for shoveling it. This past week, after hibernating for as long as possible and savoring the
“day off,” I ventured into the great void of white, shovel and scraper in hand, and attempted to determine which mound might be my car. After wading through the untouched walkways and parking lot of my complex, it was time to begin the dreaded clearing-off-the-car process. Easier said than done. After standing on my tiptoes, vainly trying to reach the summit, I was able to push off most of the twofoot accumulation – only to have a mini-avalanche fall to either side of my car. What had been knee-deep snow was now waist-deep. Spectacular. And so it went, for hours, as I slowly made headway. Two things occurred to me during this time. #1 – I
desperately need a larger shovel, and #2 – I need to move to a warmer climate. Immediately. I realize that one major snowstorm through the first six weeks of winter qualifies as fairly fortunate. But seriously, did we need to make up for a season’s worth of snow totals in just one day? Mother Nature sure doesn’t play around. Add to that the fact that February – statistically speaking, according to the too-gleefulfor-my-taste newscasters – is the snowiest month of all and, well, refer back to point #2 above. In lieu of that, I suppose I could at least go shovel shopping before the next big one hits.

the most outspoken jury members and the meekest alike. Clearly, an impressive amount of preparation and comprehension went into the planning of SSCM’s production from start to finish. Perhaps most fitting of all, since this was performed by a group of 1114 year-olds dramatically discussing the serious topic of a man on trial for the murder of his own father, it was ingenious that the Director of the school play took time after each performance to bring the group of tweens and teens back onto the stage for a bit of discussion time with the audience. They shared with the audience, almost James Lipton-style, a bit about their acting process, about what they’d learned and what they’d taken away that might have been completely unexpected from their theater experience. From the mouths of babes, as they say, eh? Some of the youngest performers, quite maturely, shared that they had never realized that sometimes, it just takes one voice...one person in a crowd, to have the courage to stand up for another human being. It occurred to them after reading through the play and then acting it out, that this kind of courage is possible and if we have the strength
to be that one voice, one solitary person can make a difference. Others shared that the whole experience was very meaningful to them on a personal level, some of them having to stand up to friends who may have been less than supportive when they’d mentioned signing up for the play early on. While another few mentioned that the thought of public speaking had always scared the daylights out of them, which is why they had decided to challenge themselves and go for it! It was clear that the students took away a whole lot more than a playbill and a flash new hat from wardrobe. Getting involved in theater arts is a valuable outlet for students of any age, and particularly onstage time. With nearly 75% of the population experiencing glossophobia or fear of public speaking, getting accustomed to stage-time early in life can be so key in developing the skills to overcome such anxiety. After all, as Shakespeare wrote, ”All the world’s a stage” - is it not? H e a r t f e l t congratulations to all of the performers, stage crew, faculty, staff and those who volunteered their time to make SSCM’s performance such a success!

Suffolk County Fire Company Christopher College Miller and Outgoing Community Basketball President and Ex-Chief Women’s Head Coach and Athletic Fred Tresselt. Director Kevin Foley, of Blue Point, earned his 400th career win last week when Suffolk defeated Hostos Community College 86-30. Foley is completing his 23nd year at the helm of Suffolk’s Women’s team that has advanced to the playoffs in 20 consecutive years. Foley’s 400th win with Suffolk’s Sharks complements an overall 400-125 record, including playing in 14 semi-finals, winning six regional championships, and a national title. Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory attended the Wyandanch Volunteer Fire Company’s Annual Installation Dinner
on Saturday, January 24th, at Larkfield Manor in East Northport. This event honored Outgoing Chief of the Wyandanch Volunteer
schools. “Athletic Director Foley is wholeheartedly a Shark. He is an excellent teacher, first and then an awesome coach, second,” said Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay, adding, “he is not only a great, winning coach, but just as importantly Coach Foley leads by example with his upbeat attitude, the first ingredient of success in basketball and in life.” Foley graduated from Seton Hall High School in 1965, where he averaged 30 points per game as a senior and was coached by the legendary Frank Layden (president/head coach of the Utah Jazz) and held the Suffolk County and Long Island high school basketball careerscoring records for many years. Foley went on to Seton Hall University on a scholarship and was the university’s basketball
team captain in 1968-1969 and averaged more than 14 points per game. Foley was inducted into the Suffolk County Sports Hall of Fame in 1994 in honor of his outstanding basketball career. Foley, in addition to coaching, is a full professor of Health and Human Services at Suffolk County Community College and is currently the Director of Athletics for the second time in his career. Other academic awards Foley has received: • New York State Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, 2004 • Distinguished Faculty Award, 2003 • Outstanding Community College Teacher, University of Texas, 1983 • Teacher Who Made a Difference, Suffolk County Community College, 1981

At Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park, Art Teacher Vincent Montella nurtures the students’ artistic abilities while educating them on the arts, both classic and modern, in the most hands-on ways possible. Since the start of the school year, SSCM students in all grades have been studying various artists, their works, understanding their particular styles and favorite medium - each working on age-appropriate projects to showcase their newly acquired skills and learning. Students in seventh and eighth grades, for example, selected an artist of their choice from various periods in Art History. They then studied this artist’s works in more depth and emulated one of his or her works using acrylic on canvas to depict their own version of the artist’s style and techniques. This Spring, the young artists will perform their “Living Museum”, in which each student will dress up as their artist of choice, and

Turn Valentine’s Day Green The world may turn red, pink and white come February, but environmentalists urge the public not to forget about going green this time of year. Valentine’s Day can be made more earthfriendly with a few extra tips and some heightened
awareness with regard to the planet. Send a card made of recycled materials. Save paper and trees when purchasing cards by choosing those made of recycled materials. Or make your own cards from materials found around the
home. A handmade card may appear more heartfelt anyway. Give eco-friendly chocolates. Purchase chocolates that were made under sustainable conditions and from companies that provide farmers and other workers
with good working conditions. The Rainforest Alliance, for example, lists companies that are certified as environmentally responsible. Research jewelry production. Gold mining can be destructive and cause environmental
blight. Aim to purchase from retailers that limit mining waste and environmental damage. Another idea is to recycle old gold jewelry into new items. Jewelry stores can melt down precious metals and turn them into entirely new and beautiful pieces.
Give thoughtful gifts. If a loved one is involved with or supports a particular charity or environmental action group, consider giving a donation to that organization in lieu of a traditional Valentine’s Day gift.

Presidents’ Day Spotlight soon became a successful lawyer in Buffalo. Fillmore soon ventured into politics as well, using his Whig connections to run for the House of Representatives, where he served for eight years. By 1848, Fillmore was realizing even more ambitious pursuits, as he was elected to serve as Taylor’s Vice President. He would not serve long in that role, as an illness that befell President Taylor on July 4, 1850, would claim his life just five days later. That thrust Fillmore into the presidency and right into the heart of heated debate surrounding the Compromise of 1850, a package of bills that aimed to defuse tensions and confrontations between the slave states of the south and the free states of the north. Fillmore would ultimately sign all five bills in the Compromise of 1850 into law, but it was his support for the Fugitive Slave Act, a
controversial element of the compromise that required all escaped slaves, upon capture, be returned to their masters and that officials and citizens in free states had to cooperate with the law. Signing and enforcing the act would come back to haunt Fillmore in 1852, when he decided to run for a full term as President. The Whig Party, still upset that Fillmore supported the act, chose not to nominate Fillmore. That decision effectively ended Fillmore’s political career, though he did make a memorable run as a third party candidate in the election of 1856. In that election, Fillmore was the presidential nominee of the American Party, winning 21 percent of the vote, which was one of the best showings a third-party presidential candidate ever produced. Millard Fillmore passed away on March 8th, 1874, from complications of a stroke.

Millard Filmore was the 13th President of the United States, assuming the nation’s highest office when President Zachary Taylor died in office after serving a little more than a year as president. Fillmore, a Whig lawyer from western New York who served as Taylor’s Vice President, was the last American president who was not affiliated with the Democratic or Republican parties. An early member of the Whig party, in 1851, Fillmore became the only president in American history to appoint a Whig Supreme Court Justice after his recess appointment of Benjamin Robbins Curtis was confirmed by the United States Senate in December of that year. Fillmore rose to occupy the White House after a humble upbringing in the Finger Lakes region of New York. At 15, the future president was apprenticed to a cloth dresser but was admitted to the bar in 1823 and
