As we begin this second month of 2017, let us take stock of the year so far… Mother Nature has been relatively kind, sparing us the worst of winter’s wrath and limiting the hazardous weather to one shovel-worthy pileup of the white stuff. Of course, history has shown February to be among the snowiest here on Long Island, so be forewarned. No matter what that little furry critter says tomorrow, we still have several weeks to go before we can start looking for crocuses. Me, I just purchased three new books and am actually looking forward to some cozy, inclement weather to settle in and start reading. The beginning of the year may not be great for outdoor activities - although, it should be noted,
some of the most exquisite sunrises and sunsets tend to grace our skies during these month - but there are plenty of indoor hobbies to embrace, from movies to bowling to planetarium shows and more. Speaking of pastimes, I was pleasantly surprised to receive quite a bit of feedback to last week’s column on the closing of my yoga studio, with many offering their recommendations for alternative locations and similarly touting the benefits of this spiritual practice. Thank you to all who wrote in – it is certainly nice to know that there is an entire community of fellow “yogis” out there, and that many of you read my column weekly! In line with that feedback, it also occurred to me that I never did share the arrival of a new little finned friend,
“Spud,” who I adopted back at the end of November. While no pet will ever come close to replacing my Buddy and our very special relationship, Spud is certainly an entertaining little fellow with a personality all his own. Just a mere baby betta when I took him in, he is slowly growing into a beautiful boy with spikey blue fins and a penchant for darting to and fro and “playing” with his reflection. Spud’s swimming skills can use a little work, and I’m still crushing his food pellets into tiny, more manageable crumbs for his delicate system; but, overall, he seems to be adjusting to his new home quite nicely. And with that, we head into February, hoping that each passing month brings with it a little more sunshine into our lives.

The Recycling Club at Robert Moses Middle School in the North Babylon School District participated in Reuse-AShoe, a community service project sponsored by Nike.
The club collected pairs of outworn athletic sneakers throughout the school to donate to the cause. As part of the program, Nike grinds these shoes down and uses the

material for surfaces such as tracks, playgrounds and tennis courts. Representatives of the Town of Babylon visited the school to honor the students for their efforts.
West Babylon Senior High School varsity basketball player Shannon McGuire reached a basketball milestone on January 12th. While playing at Hauppauge, she hit a 3-pointer early in the
third quarter to score her 1,000th career point. McGuire has been playing on the West Babylon varsity basketball team since eighth grade. She has been the leading scorer for the Eagles

since her sophomore year. Last year, McGuire was an All-League and AllCounty selection. Next year, she will continue her basketball career at SUNY Cortland.

K-9 Assembly Students of Babylon Elementary School were recently treated to a special assembly in which Suffolk County Police Department Commissioner and Babylon School District parent, Timothy Sini, and members from the SCPD K-9 Unit visited the school to teach students about the importance of working dogs on the police force.
Mr. Sini spoke to the students about how to properly handle an emergency situation, and who to reach out to in case of said emergency. Officers Ken Michaels and Charles Tramontana of the SCPD K-9 unit were also on hand to tell the students what role the dogs serve on the force and provide background information
on the canines, including how they are raised to obey commands in the German language. The presentation concluded with the officers and visiting police dog, Dallas 5, demonstrating some of the commands and a question and answer session.

Challenged to Learn Fifth-graders in Kelly DeCarlo’s class at South Bay Elementary School in the West Babylon School District recently had to use their social studies knowledge to solve a break out challenge on January 23rd. As part of their social
studies curriculum on westward expansion, the students used facts they learned in class to unlock the breakout gaming box. Working in groups, the students used critical thinking, collaboration and creativity to try to solve the clues and unlock
the box. In a breakout, students must decipher clues to discover how to open locks, and use hidden contraptions, timers, keys and other “diversion hardware” to solve the challenge.
