he Environmental Club at Robert Moses Middle School in the North Babylon School District participated in Reuse-AShoe, a community service project sponsored by Nike. The club collected pairs of outworn athletic sneakers throughout the school to donate to the cause. As part of the program, Nike grinds these shoes down and uses the material for surfaces such as tracks, playgrounds and tennis courts.

Winter is coming. Winter is coming. So the humans have been saying for the last three months, and yet… only now, in the final week of January, have I gotten to witness firsthand this magical white stuff in action. And what a beauty it is, even from the confines of my tiny betta bowl. Swirling snowflakes, blowing through the air, piling up outside my window to the outside world… and my human, fervently shoveling out her electric blue car – what a fine color it is, I might add – as the wind whips across the parking lot. But still, the opportunity
to hibernate with my human for an entire weekend, to have her undivided attention while we relaxed together and watched Netflix on the couch – that was priceless. We just finished Season 1 of House of Cards and I’m already, excuse the pun, “hooked.” I must admit, I didn’t understand the obsession with scouring the stores for every last container of milk, carton of eggs and loaf of bread at first. But then I realized the horror of not being able to make French toast for an entire day, and I understood the magnitude of such a storm and the havoc it could wreak on the masses. Just the thought of a day without flakes was
enough to drive my fins into a frenzy. Add to that the hazards of commuting, and it’s no wonder humans have so much anxiety at the first forecast of a flake. Me, I have trouble navigating around my plant when the water gets a little cloudy. I have the frayed fins to prove it. I understand this may be only the beginning of the winter weather. So far, not so bad. I’m just keeping my fins crossed that there are no major storms headed this way for February 16th – my very first betta birthday in my human’s home. I expect a big turnout for my party… and presents… and extra flakes of course… Just not of the snow variety.

In the middle of the game, the score is 28 to 30. Our team is losing by three points. When the game starts, our team gets the ball first. My teammate passes me the ball; the opponents are jumping on top of me. They smell like smelly socks, and you can hear the dribbling noise of the ball as it is bounced on the ground. I had to cross the opponents over, and then I was about to shoot from the three-point line. I felt the rough rubber material with a flick of my wrist. The ball was slowly rolling around the rim, acting like it didn’t want to go in. You could see the bright orange color of the ball. It went in and made a swooshing noise. The whole crowd cheered. On December 5th, at Shop Rite, the West Babylon Main Street Organization held a highly successful food drive, called Backpacks for Hunger. WBMSO works closely with the West Babylon

The West Babylon Junior High School art department is showcasing its work at the second annual Art Exhibition at the West Babylon Public Library. Throughout the month of January, the artwork of the advanced

Babylon Junior-Senior High School students cheered on 11 fellow classmates as they took part in this year’s school spelling bee in the library on January 13th. Having successfully completed their classroom bee, the seventh- and
eighth-graders navigated challenging words derived from various countries and time periods as they worked to be named school champion. This year’s event went several rounds, before eighthgrader Anna Romero was named the winner after
correctly spelling the word “insouciance.” Seventhgrader Allie Van Rossem was named runner-up. Anna will compete against other school winners at the Long Island regional spelling bee at Hofstra University in March.
Dr. King Remembered Second-grade reading students at Parliament Place Elementary School in North Babylon learned about the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during a recent class activity. As part of the lesson, reading teacher Michelle Davis read “Happy Birthday, Martin Luther King” and “Martin Luther
King, Jr. Day” to students. She also spoke about Dr. King’s impact on the Civil Rights Movement, his speeches and the use of nonviolent protests. Unfair laws and segregation were also discussed. After the readings, the children were asked to explain Dr. King’s dream. They also came up with

their own dream to make the world a better place, using text connections. The students then wrote their dreams on a paper crown, decorated it and used a proofreading checklist to ensure accurate writing. The children enjoyed wearing the crowns for the remainder of the school day.

An Amazing Teacher

She’s an amazing teacher and I love her.” In an effort to show her appreciation, Victoria traveled to the Northeastern Poultry Congress in Massachusetts, where, one year earlier, she conducted her first celebrity interview with popular children’s author and illustrator, Jan Brett. After reminiscing with Jan and telling her about
Diversity on the Mind Photojournalist Mike Harrold visited Babylon Elementary School on January 13th and shared a multimedia presentation that showcased his journeys to the faraway lands. Tying with the school’s theme of diversity in January, Mr. Harrold highlighted his many trips, promoting multi-cultural awareness and respect while showing the similarities between
cultures all around the world. “Mike Harrold is an exceptional cultural artist, photographer and world traveler,” said Babylon School District Superintendent of Schools Linda Rozzi. “His presentations always engage students and more importantly, encourage youngsters to respect one another’s differences.”
Mr. Harrold also shared his adventures to the large cities and small villages of Africa, China, and India. After the group presentation, each class visited Mr. Harrold in the library for a smaller setting throughout the day, where they were allowed to closely examine some of the artifacts from his many trips abroad.

Twelve year-old animal educator and journalist Victoria Bonavita returned last week to her former school, Belmont Elementary, to give a special gift to a very special teacher, Ms. Pernice. As she made her way to her former teacher’s classroom, she was recognized for her many achievements since graduating in 2014 and was given a very warm welcome by everyone at Belmont. Victoria said, “Ms.
Ms. Pernice, the author inscribed her popular book The Mitten – “To Jeannine Pernice, An Amazing Teacher.” She also added a few drawings to the page, including her iconic mitten. Victoria created and gave her first learning presentation, “Victoria’s Amazing Pets,” as a fifth grade student at Belmont. She has since gone on to be recognized by Dowling College for her work in the field of arts and sciences. She teaches in schools, libraries and nature centers. She has been featured numerous times on TV as an animal educator and writes her own animal education column. She’s also had the wonderful opportunity to interview amazing people like Jack Hanna, Oscar nominated actor Burt Young and Dr. Jane Goodall, to name just a few.
