The Snooze Button By: Jamie Lynn Ryan The snooze button. That wonderful option to roll over and drift back to sleep for just a few more minutes, or hours, apparently. Hence, why it is now 5 p.m. on deadline day and I am just beginning to formulate a column. Well, some semblance of one anyway. So what has everyone been doing this winter to keep occupied now that the holiday rush is officially over? Catching up on a little reading, maybe? Some TV series binge watching, perhaps? I, personally, am guilty of both vices, having
made it my mission to complete the entire five volume series of Game of Thrones before the next season premiere, which… well, let’s just say, at nearly 1,000 pages per volume, is looking a bit overly optimistic at the moment. Of course, if I didn’t spend every spare hour binging on old episodes of Gilmore Girls on Netflix, all seven seasons of it, that would probably speed the process along, but… there’s just something about reliving the innocence of my high school and college days whilst living the madness of being an adult. (Speaking of, I don’t think people use terms like “hence”
and “whilst” quite enough, don’t you agree? A column topic for another time.) In any case, winter isn’t so bad if you know how to fill your time. And if vegetating on the couch is the best option, go with it. The long, dark nights, the bonechilling temperatures… all great reasons to curl up with a giant mug of hot chocolate (with extra marshmallows) and a blanket. Just try not to let the hours get away from you, as, before you know it, the birds begin chirping and it’s time to rise and shine and do it all again. Of course, there’s always the snooze button if you need a few extra minutes.

Robots score points by stacking totes on scoring platforms, capping those stacks with recycling containers, and properly disposing of pool noodles, representing litter. In keeping with the recycling theme of the game, all game pieces used are reusable or recyclable by teams in their home locations or by FIRST at the end of the season. In addition, SBPLI held a special session for the students’ parents in which they learned about the organization, its mission and the impact of the robotics programs on the students’ lives, both academically and professionally. SBPLI representatives, team mentors, volunteers and former Long Island Regional FRC participants shared experiences and highlighted the value and importance of the robotics programs. An interactive session followed in which the parents provided suggestions for important fundraising activities and ways to reach other parents in the program. After learning the rules and being shown the playing field, teams received a Kit of Parts made up of motors, batteries, a control system, a PC, and a mix of automation components - and only limited instructions. Working with adult mentors, students have six weeks to design, build, program, and test their robots to meet the season’s engineering challenge. Once these young inventors build a robot, their teams will participate in the SBPLI Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition, which will take place on March 26th-28th at Hofstra University’s David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition

Fourth-graders at Belmont Elementary School in the North Babylon School District received a visit from the Suffolk County Water Authority and learned about the journey of water from the ground to the
faucet. Using a five-gallon aquarium, Kathryn Fedun of the SCWA gave the students a presentation about the water cycle. She also demonstrated how aquifers naturally filter water using different layers
of soil under the ground and taught students about the importance of protecting drinking water on Long Island.

A Court of Honor ceremony was held for Bryan, who is a member of Boy Scout Troop 399, at the North Babylon Lions Club. For his Eagle Project, Bryan organized a food drive to benefit both Our Lady of Miraculous Medal in Wyandanch and Saint Cyril and Methodius Church in Deer Park.

St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School is proud to announce that it has won a $25,000 award from the Celebrate My Drive Grant program powered by State Farm®. This grant is the result of St. John’s finishing among the top 100 out of 3,283 registered high schools in an online competition in which students, parents, teachers, administrators and community members made commitments to drive safely. The effort was led by the St. John the Baptist S.A.D.D. (Students Against Destructive Decisions) club and was embraced by the entire school community.
A portion of the grant money will be used to fund a program that will bring awareness of the dangers of texting while driving to the school community. “This award is a testament to the magnificent school community here at St. John’s.” said Assistant Principal Darius Penikas. “Through this program we were able to bring awareness to a very important issue and express our commitment to driver safety; we would like to thank State Farm® and the Celebrate My Drive program for this wonderful opportunity.” Automobile crashes are the leading cause of death
for teens and the first year behind the wheel is the most dangerous. Celebrate My Drive is an opportunity to celebrate new drivers and the freedom as well as the responsibility that comes with earning a driver’s license. It’s a chance for teens and their high schools to amplify conversations about this important topic and help be part of the solution. Celebrate My Drive asks all drivers to think 2n2®: 2 eyes on the road and 2 hands on the wheel. Safe driving starts with this simple message and with each driver and passenger.
Students from North Babylon High School visited Marion G. Vedder Elementary School, both in the North Babylon School District, to conduct science lab lessons for its fourth-graders. Students in Renee Bandes’ advanced placement environmental science class worked
with the MGV students on lab exercises about groundwater contamination, which correlated with the fourthgrade’s water cycle topic study. The high school students took on teacher roles - they researched information, organized it in a meaningful way for their audience and

Consumers Should Take Advantage Of Free Credit Reports ( N A P S I ) — T h e Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) found that many consumers are overwhelmed by the amount of information available to help them learn more about the financial services marketplace. At the same time, the CFPB found one of the most popular resources offered is information about credit reports. The credit bureaus have found that information about credit reports is popular as well. “Each
year, there are over 25 million free credit reports provided to consumers,” said Stuart K. Pratt, president and CEO of the Consumer Data Industry Association. “And while that’s a significant number, there are still a considerable number of consumers who aren’t exercising their option to get their report. According to a survey done by VantageScore and the Consumer Federation of America, 37 percent of consumers have never obtained a copy of their credit report,” he added.
Consumers can get a free credit report from each of the three nationwide credit bureaus, Equifax, Experian and Trans-Union, once a year by going to www.annualcreditreport. com. The process is easy and enables consumers to have real-time access to their credit reports. “Many people get annual medical checkups. We encourage consumers to be just as conscientious when it comes to their personal finances; get an annual credit checkup by obtaining your free credit report,” added Pratt.
