However, despite the many proclaimed benefits of DST, there are many detractors who insist that there are no perceived benefits. Some of these DST naysayers say switching the clocks twice a year can negatively affect the body’s natural circadian rhythm. Various efforts both domestically and abroad have been instituted to abolish DST, but as of 2020, it remains on the calendar.

One reason DST is still practiced in many areas of the world is to push an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening and make better use of this daylight. There are various origin stories linked to DST, including one that involves Benjamin Franklin. DST also has been touted as a way to save resources during times of war or as a means to helping farmers be more prosperous.

MULTICULTURAL CLUB SUPPORTS EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS - The Multicultural Club at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus, led by adviser Maria Beauchesne, collected cases of bottled water throughout January to aid many of the earthquake victims in Puerto Rico. The donation was given to the Town of Hempstead, which was collecting supplies to help the residents of the island, including water, non-perishable food items, laundry detergent and other household goods. The Multicultural Club thanks the students and staff who contributed to this cause and for assisting many of the Puerto Rican people during this difficult time. The Long Island Music Hall of Fame Is Now Accepting Applications

The Long Island Music Hall of Fame is proud to announce that it is accepting applications for the 2020 School Recognition Program. The Long Island Music Hall of Fame High School Recognition Program is designed to identify Long Island High School music programs that are creating valuable music experiences for their students and that are incorporating the National and New York State’s Standards for the arts in creative and meaningful ways. “We are very excited to offer Long Island schools an opportunity to have their music programs objectively evaluated,” said LIMHOF Vice Education Committee Chairman Tom Needham. “We will not only honor programs but will also share feedback and learn more about the challenges each school faces as we continue to support and promote music education on Long Island.” Applications will be reviewed by a panel of music educators some whom have been recognized by the Long Island Music Hall of Fame as “Educators of Note.” High Schools will be given designations of Gold with Distinction, Gold, Silver, Bronze or Emerging. Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC), a local non-profit prevention and outreach coalition serving the Massapequa and Massapequa Park community was recently featured on a syndicated television show titled, The Donna Drake Show! The nationally syndicated television program focuses on topics of motivation and inspiration, providing insight and good news stories. MTAC’s Project Director, Cathy Samuels and Mark Wenzel, MTAC Co-Chair and Assistant Director, YES Community Counseling Center were both interviewed in front of a live studio audience. The discussion and interview was lead by host Donna Drake and topics included how MTAC began in the Massapequa community, substance abuse and prevention tips, early intervention with young students and parents, and how the coalition is making

an impact and a difference in the lives of young people in Massapequa. The Donna Drake Show provides empowering tips and solutions and both Samuels and Wenzel provided many suggestions and recommendations on how people can get involved with MTAC, support MTAC’s mission and make a difference in the community to prevent prescription misuse, underage drinking and marijuana use. The television program aired on CBS TV55 on January 18, 2020 with syndication in New York City, Long Island, Westchester, Rockland, New Jersey, Connecticut, St. Louis and Boston. So it should come as no surprise that the 2019-2020 National Pet Owners Survey, which was conducted by the American Pet Products Association, found that about 85 million families in the United States own a pet. In Canada, 7.5 million households are home to companion animals, states the PetBacker blog. Pets offer companionship and unconditional love. While they are fitting for any family, seniors may find that having a pet is especially beneficial. The organization A Place for Mom, which helps match families with senior living residences, says pets provide a comfort system that produces measurable health results. Caring for pets and being around them can produce a chemical chain reaction in the brain that may help to lower stress hormones while also increasing production of the feelgood hormone serotonin. This is not the only health benefit pets may provide. A recent study from the Mayo Clinic, which looked at 1,800 people between the ages of 25 and 64 who had healthy hearts, found that almost half owned a dog. Having a dog was likely to spur heart-healthy behaviors, like exercising with the pet, eating well and having ideal blood sugar levels. Pets also provide emotional support and companionship that can help seniors — including those who may be divorced or widowed — feel more secure and happy. The National Poll on Healthy Aging found that, among respondents who had pets, 88 percent said their pets helped them enjoy life, and 86 percent said their pets made them feel loved. Seniors considering getting a pet can explore the many benefits to doing so. • Reduce pain: A 2012 study published in Pain Magazine found therapy dogs provided “significant reduction in pain and emotional distress for chronic pain patients.”

• Feeling of purpose: Caring for an animal not only stimulates physical activity, but it also can give seniors a reason to get up and go, which equates to a feeling of purpose. • Altered focus: Having a pet can help seniors focus on something other than physical or mental health issues and preoccupations about loss or aging, according to New York-based psychologist Penny B. Donnenfeld. • Increased physical activity: Pets require care, and that interaction can get seniors moving more than if they didn’t have a pet. • Improved health: Ongoing research from Harvard Medical School has found dog owners have lower blood pressure, healthier cholesterol levels and lower risk of heart disease than those who don’t own a dog. • Stick to routine: Caring for pets helps seniors maintain a routine. Having structure after retirement can be important to ward off risk of depression. Staying on top of feeding, grooming and other pet needs also can help prevent cognitive decline. Pets bring many benefits to their owners’ lives, and they may be the perfect remedy for seniors looking for a friend and purpose.

Be Safe When Lightning Strikes A change in seasons often brings about a change in the weather as well. The National Weather Service says lightning strikes the United States roughly 25 million times a year, killing an average of 47 people each year. Worldwide, lighting kills as many as 2,000 people every year, states National Geographic. Even though the odds of being struck by lightning are low, certain factors put people at greater risk. Florida is considered the â€œlightning capitalâ€? of the United States, so residents of the Sunshine State should always exercise extreme caution upon seeing lightning. Residents of Alabama, Colorado, North

Carolina, and Texas also must be extra cautious when lightning strikes. To stay safe, remember the mantra, â€œWhen thunder roars, go indoors.â€? In addition, the following precautionary measures can help people stay safe when lightning strikes. â€˘Postpone outdoor activities if the weather forecast calls for thunder-storms. You also can use the 30-30 rule. After you see lightning, start counting to 30. If you hear thunder before you reach 30, go indoors. Hooping And Hopping For Heart Health At Birch Lane Encouraging students to develop lifelong healthy habits is a key mission for physical education instructors throughout the Massapequa School District. In February, children at Birch Lane Elementary School participated in the Heart Health Challenge, learning some simple activities that they can do to stay in shape. During their physical education classes with teachers Chris Cafiero and

Amanda Ostapow, students rotated through multiple stations that allowed them to exercise different parts of their bodies and strengthen their hearts. There was a basketball station, scooting racing, hula hoops, jumping jacks, burpees, juggling and line jumps. Students could also run, jog or walk around the perimeter of the gym. Each day featured a different heart-related fact on the bulletin board outside the gymnasium.

Students also learned how to find their pulse and calculate their target heart rate based on their age. The Heart Health Challenge also served as a fundraiser for the American Heart Association, with Birch Lane students raising about $10,000. They watched a video to learn how donations help the organization fulfill its mission in preventing heart disease and other serious cardiovascular conditions.
