comfort and familiarity level to those veterans seeking assistance. Since its inception in 2012, over 2,000 veterans have participated in the Joseph P. Dwyer Project where they share their experiences with fellow veterans and allow the healing process to begin. As part of the outreach effort, the Suffolk County Veterans Service Agency issued an informational pamphlet on the Joseph P. Dwyer Project to veteran households throughout the County. “Suffolk is home to the largest veteran population in the State of New York, the second largest in the United States, and we need to ensure that they are taken care of each and everyday,” said Congressman-elect Lee Zeldin. “We know that holiday time is often

the hardest time of the year for families who lost their sons or daughters. We will never forget their sacrifice to protect our freedom and way of life.” As State Senator, Zeldin increased funding in the 2014-2015 state budget to continue the expansion of the Joseph Dwyer Project. Stop Colds Before They Start The stuffy nose, aches and pains that often accompany the common cold can leave sufferers feeling miserable for a week or more. Cold season seems to kick into high gear when the temperatures drop, but this can be the year you don’t come down with a case of the sniffles. The following cold prevention tips can increase your chances of making it to spring without losing any days or sleep to the common cold. • Keep kids clean. School-aged kids tend to carry home lots of germs, so when kids get home after a long day at school, make sure they wash their hands thoroughly and change into fresh outfits. Such

precautionary measures can keep colds and other illnesses from running rampant through your house. • Go outdoors and get some fresh air. It’s a myth that cold air will bring on a cold. In reality, being outside instead of congregating indoors with other sick people may decrease your risk of getting a cold. Don’t be afraid to go outside when the temperatures drop for fear of getting sick. Fresh air and exercise can be good for you. • Drink plenty of fluids. Keeping your body hydrated will help flush toxins out of your body, strengthening your immune system and making it more capable of fending off colds.

• Keep your distance. Did you know the cold virus can be shot up to three feet away when someone sneezes? The virus travels on the small droplets of saliva and mucus that get propelled from the nose and mouth of a sick individual. If you know someone is sick, stay as far away as possible and wash your hands frequently, paying special attention to your fingertips. • Wipe down surfaces. The cold virus can live on surfaces for up to 24 hours. That means a sick person can easily transfer a virus by touching a computer keyboard or remote control he or she shares with others. Use disinfecting wipes or warm, soapy water to clean off doorknobs, telephones, light switches, cabinet handles, and anything that is frequently touched around a home or business. • Let it out gently. Blowing your nose forcefully or pinching your nose to hold back sneezes can irritate nasal passageways and make them more vulnerable to infection. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. If you are well, keep your hands away from your mouth, nose and eyes. Viruses are especially good at entering the body through the mucus membranes located in these areas of the body. A combination of frequent handwashing and avoiding touching your face can keep colds at bay. • Maintain your exercise routine. Regular exercise can boost the body’s immune system and help it to fend off foreign invaders, including the cold virus. A recent study found that taking vitamin C in addition to daily exercise can reduce your risk of cold and cut the duration of the cold should you get one. Before taking

Everything Old Is New Again By: Jamie Lynn Ryan So did everyone get what you wanted for Christmas this year? Aside from the pleasure of each other’s company, of course… I asked for a combination DVD/VCR player – one of those retro, bordering-onobsolete creations that I personally feel should be a staple of every household. How else can you view all those old home movies and classic Disney videos? And, in my case, about 20 years’

worth of dance recital recordings… Add to that the fact that, given the option, I would much rather watch a DVD movie rental on a flat screen TV as opposed to my computer monitor. Sure, I realize most people stream media on their laptops nowadays; but I’m not most people, and I would like to have the option of viewing movies on something larger than a smartphone. Hence, my request for this outdated piece of machinery, the gift

that keeps on giving, allowing us the pleasure of reliving those timeless memories on a larger scale. Priceless, if you ask me. So once the winter weather settles in and hibernation starts looking awfully appealing, I plan to fire up the old (new) machine and have myself a minimarathon of movies, TV series I’ve been meaning to catch up on – and of course those classic dance routines. Commencement Celebration Stony Brook University held its 17th Annual December commencement ceremony today in the newly renovated Island Federal Credit Union Arena, where 1,571 students had their degrees conferred. The new graduates, which range in age from 20–77, joined approximately 150,000 of their predecessors around the globe whose lives and work personify the Stony Brook University mission. During his commencement address, Stony Brook University President Samuel L.

Stanley Jr., M.D., spoke about the tradition of graduation, the increasing value of a Stony Brook degree, and reinforced the competitive advantages and opportunities that Stony Brook graduates will have as they enter new chapters in their lives. “Recently some have questioned the value of a college degree, have stated that a college education may not be worth its cost. Let me make it very clear. Your investment in your Stony Brook degree will be one of the best investments you (and your family) ever

made,” said President Stanley. “In addition to earning higher wages,” he continued, “college graduates are more likely to find jobs than those who didn’t attend college. Bie, licensed professional engineer and assistant vice president, plant engineering for Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center, West Islip.
