PLAYING SANTA - Toys and gift cards that were collected during the Full Throttle Magazine Winter Wonderland event on December 3rd were donated to patients at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital during the publication’s 5th Annual Toy Run. Hundreds of Long Island motorcycle riders and fire engines from the Centereach Fire Department roared down Nicolls Road to come spread holiday cheer to the children and their families, many who will be spending the holiday season in the hospital. This year ‘Santa’ was hoisted up via Hook & Ladder to see some of the children that were not well enough to meet Jolly ol’ St. Nick in person. The magazine also raised over $5,000 in addition to the toys, which will support the new home of Stony Brook Children’s.

Over the river and through the woods to Wrapping It Up we go... to find the perfect gift for everyone on my list! They have sweet treats and beautiful gifts to choose from. Hate to gift wrap? I never worry... they do that too. Go visit them and tell them Santa sent you. Even Santa needs a little help for the holidays! xoxo

EVOLUTION

SUBMITTED BY: LAUREN DESTEFANO AGE 17, BETHPAGE HIGH SCHOOL

NORTH MASSAPEQUA - SOUTH BAY’S NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 17, 2014 • www.southbaysneighbor.com

The inevitable journey of evolution guides us to enlightenment of hidden, or rather undiscovered, opportunities. Although this epidemic of unfamiliar findings brings us to the peak of the “ant hill,” anything that gets too tall will surely fall. When does simplicity regain the popularity and drive us back to the bottom of the hill? We cannot “undiscover” the new world, but we can rediscover the old one - and steer ourselves back to sanity, to chastity, before we crash and burn to the bottom with nothing but raw and blistered remains of what used to be victory. We are liable for the foreshadowing hostility that is forthcoming. Do we remain dependent on the illusion that is driving us to lunacy? Should we sew the blindfolds to our

own faces and trust the word of fraudulent command? In a world that emerged from ignorance and transpired to global sophistication, we sure are naive to think our achievements will not drive us to the ground. Times have changed, and it is impractical to think life will progress without discovery. But when these newfound portals take us to places that leave our original nature behind, we find ourselves deteriorating without even realizing it. There is nothing wrong with change; change is good. It is when we forget where we came from, where we started and where it all began, that we risk crashing and burning from achievement to collapse. It is when we strive too much for the future and forget about the past, or more importantly the

present, that we find ourselves falling into the unavoidable black hole of defeat. We must not avoid the fear inside of us that questions the meaning of life; otherwise we will fall into the intriguing fantasy that if we do not tend to our fears, they do not exist. They exist, and those fears must be the driving force to wisdom in this life. It is time to open our eyes and take responsibility for the drowning day that is ahead, unless we choose to prevent it. Time that we will never get back is ticking away, and we are letting it slip through our fingers. Choose simplicity, choose purity, and we will hopefully find the loophole to our now unchangeable future. It is up to us to be the new age of discovery - but not discovery of the future, discovery of the past.

One Of A Kind By: Jamie Lynn Ryan He was just a goldfish. But he was so much more than that, to me anyway. Yes, that’s right readers, dear Harry has passed away, gone off to swim with his pal Harvey in the great fishbowl in the sky. True, he was only with us (well, me, anyway) for two short months, but in that time, we formed a strong bond. Goldfish or not, Harry was my buddy, my companion, my pet… another life I was responsible for making as comfortable and cheery as one can possibly be, living in a plastic bubble and all.

Plus, he was special. This fish had a personality all his own. Maybe it was from crashing into the side of the bowl too often, but he was certainly one of a kind. Never before have I had a goldfish interact with the same degree of almost human qualities; whether it was eagerly watching me prepare dinner, flitting to and fro among the branches of “his” plant, or even cowering behind it on the dreaded “water change” days. And then, after he was safely returned to his home, coaxed out from between the stems with a generous pinch of fish flakes and some loving

attention, all was well in his world again. In the end, I’m not sure what led to Harry’s demise, but I know I did everything I possibly could for him. Maybe he missed Harvey; perhaps a fishbowl was never his destiny. Either way, I believe Harry has gone on to bigger and better things, swimming with all the other fishies, if you’ll pardon the pun, who have gone before him. I do hope he enjoyed his brief time as my adopted pet. I’ll miss ya Harry. There will never be another goldfish quite like you.

STUDENTS HELPING SANTA - Students in grades 5 through 8 helped out Santa over at Grace Day School in Massapequa last weekend. They donated their time to help younger students in grades K-8 visit with Santa and pose for pictures. They participated in all aspects of the community breakfast, assisting with setting-up props, backdrops, handing out candy canes, serving pancakes and even running power cords. Show here, some members of the volunteer group pose for a picture with Santa. Great job volunteers!

Contest Winners

“It just came to me; the other night I was at my aunt’s house and she served asparagus and I thought, I’m not eating that!” said Birch Lane Elementary School fifth-grader Robert Conklin, but it did inspire him to come up with the winning name, “AsparaGus,” in a contest to name the mascot for Long Island Cares, Inc. The organization, founded by the late folksinger Harry Chapin, is one of the largest hungerassistance programs, serving thousands of Long Islanders in need.

A contest was held to name its friendly looking, bright green dragon, which travels around to schools and other venues to help spread awareness of hunger on Long Island. After some of the other names, such as “Pickles,” “Crunch” and “Green Beans,” were tossed, Robert’s name was chosen, winning the contest for John Coyne’s fifth-grade class. The entire fifth grade was rewarded with a visit by Asparagus who playfully “high-fived” students, danced and gave out nutritious snacks for the

children to enjoy in their classrooms. Birch Lane teachers learned about the contest when they brought their fifth-grade classes to a concert by Tom Chapin (Harry’s brother), to which they brought cases of food, contributing to the 2,800 pounds collected and dispersed to Long Island’s hungry. “We are thankful to Birch Lane School and to Robert for his creativity in coming up with the name,” said Paule Pachter, CEO of Long Island Cares, Inc.

For the second consecutive year, the Massapequa High School Mock Trial Team was invited to hone its skills at Harvard University’s High School Training Seminar. The seminar offers a range of basic and advanced classes that better position teams to win state and national competitions. Because of the extensive program offered at Massapequa High School, participants Katie McMahon, Olivia Glum, Taylor Del Valle, Miranda McLeer, Kait Peterson, Danielle Bianco, Juliet Remi, Selin Solen, Emily O’ Leary, Caroline Gibbons, Jillian Prystupa, Nicolle Dananberg, Nicole Feely, Laine Thelian, Tim Byrne, Ethan Sausa, Keyvan Karimabady, Evan Ryan and Kevin Hitchings were

placed in the advanced classes. They soaked up all they could on public speaking, body language, trial advocacy and the Federal Rules of Evidence. They received individual attention in breakout sessions to improve their personal strengths and weaknesses, as well as guidance from Princeton Review in applying to colleges. The teams then performed against each other using the skills they learned through the Harvard Method. “The students worked from first thing in the morning until they went to bed,” said Dan Bachman, the team’s advisor. They demonstrated an intellectual level of perseverance that was astonishing to watch. The team will undoubtedly

operate on a higher level this year, giving them a major advantage in the upcoming competitions.” Massapequa was the only Long Island team at the seminar. Others hailed from states throughout the country, such as Illinois, New Jersey and Texas. The team first learned about the opportunity from Lauren Reisig, a 2012 Massapequa graduate and former Mock Trial Team member who is currently a junior at the university. Massapequa’s Mock Trial Team won the county championship in her senior year. Students fundraised and worked together to make the trip a reality. Bachman said he was also grateful for the district’s help in allowing the team to realize this goal.

(NAPSI)—Whether you’re thinking of buying, selling, remodeling or just wondering about the value of your home, you need to know local market conditions—the picture may be brighter than you thought. To help, the home and real estate experts at Hanley Wood Market Intelligence have a new tool. Visit www. builderonline.com, click the blue Local Housing Data tab, enter your zip code, and you’ll see graphs and charts depicting values for your local market. Jonathan Smoke, executive director of research for Hanley Wood, says, “Healthy markets have the following traits: a growing job market, favorable demographic trends, a diverse and educated workforce, subsiding foreclosure activity, and positive quality of life factors.” For remodeling, see how to maximize your return on investment at www.costvsvalue.com. According to Remodeling magazine, the three projects with the highest return this year are fiber cement siding, entry door replacement, and attic bedroom remodel. with commercial plates will be permitted. Any residents looking to pick up complimentary firewood should also consider safety precautions before activating a fireplace. Residents should remember to clean and inspect both the fireplace and chimney before the first use of the season in order to prevent any chimney fires from occurring. If there is a fire lit in the fireplace, the damper must remain open at all times with either a screen or glass

door implemented to keep sparks from flying into the room. Many of the precautions used when operating a fireplace should also be put in use when cleaning a wood stove. Make sure your fireplace or wood stove is in proper working condition and pick up some free firewood, courtesy of the Town, and safely enjoy the glowing warmth your fireplace or wood stove has to offer. Tips On Avoiding Financial Exploitation (NAPSI)—There’s good news for older Americans. While financial abuse and scams are believed to cost seniors an estimated $3 billion annually, you can help prevent them and protect yourself. For example, here are

some steps you can take: • Plan your financial future with trusted family members, friends and professionals. If managing your daily finances is difficult, consider engaging a money manager. • Talk with a lawyer

about creating a durable power of attorney for asset management, a revocable or living will, and trust and health care advance directives. • Don’t be pressured or intimidated into quick financial decisions or sign

any documents you do not completely understand. • Never provide personal information (Social Security number, credit card) over the phone unless you placed the call and know with whom you are speaking.

• Tear up or shred credit card receipts, bank statements, solicitations and financial records before disposing of them. For more tips on avoiding exploitation, or if you suspect you or someone you know is being

exploited, call the Eldercare Locator at (800) 677-1116 or visit www.eldercare.gov. The Eldercare Locator is a public service of the U.S. Administration on Aging

Career Showcase Demonstrations of 3-D printing technology, microelectronics, emergency medical care and dozens of other fields piqued the interest of more than 900 Massapequa High School students who gained firsthand knowledge about different careers at the 6th Annual Career Day/Futures Fair. “By talking with an expert in the pharmacy field and finding out what he does in a clinical setting is something I wouldn’t have gotten from a pamphlet,” said senior Will Vaccaro. “It gave me a new perspective of the field I plan to pursue.” The hands-on, interactive format has proven to be a successful way to open the eyes of students who are thirsty to learn more about possible career choices. Students in grades 9-12 are exposed to about 50 or 60 different careers, particularly those in health care and engineering/technology, according to Sue Thompson, Massapequa High School’s chairperson for career & technology education. Students are given cards with sample questions to help spur conversations with presenters, such as “What qualities does your employer look for”; “Does your career require you to work as a team” and “How important is persistence and problem solving in your career?”

Among the presenters were a recent Massapequa graduate who attended Career Day as a student and a notso-recent graduate whose exuberance for his engineering field drew students into his display like a magnet. Two years ago, Massapequa High School graduate Donald Grupski recalled speaking with representatives,

particularly ones from Adelphi University, about careers in criminal justice and computer science. Now a sophomore at the school and working at its 3D computer lab, he was back at Career Day as a presenter along with his supervisor Charlie Kulins, customer service manager for the school’s technology department, and

Thomas Ward, executive director for Adelphi’s Center for Career Development, who is also a board member on the Massapequa Partnership for Career Development. The three showed how 3D printing works and the various fields that benefit from it. IBM engineer and 1975 Massapequa graduate Steve Herschbein described to students how he develops microchips and microelectronics for mainframes and computers. With a colorful display and an assortment of fun giveaways that changed color to illustrate light absorption, Herschbein discussed with students possibilities in the engineering field and in the future of his industry. On one side of the gym, the tables were turned. Student work in robotics, video game design, digital photography, engineering, and Computer Aided Design were showcased for the professionals to see. Some of these classes are given for college credit at Farmingdale State College, which was also on hand to promote the courses that can be taken at Massapequa High School for credit. New this fall will be two three-credit courses in Virtual Enterprise, one called Contemporary Business Communications and the other E-Commerce in which students run a business online and interact with other high school students around the world.

Speakers from Love Heals, the Alison Gertz Foundation for AIDS Education clearly stressed the importance of exercising good judgment, open communication and responsible behavior during intimate relationships to freshman at Massapequa High School-Ames Campus. Their presentation was one of several state-mandated, age-appropriate lessons conducted during the district’s AIDS Awareness Week, December 1stDecember 5th, which was held the same week as World AIDS Day,

December 1st. The speakers - one who gave in to peer pressure in high school and contracted the disease during his first sexual encounter and the other whose straight A smarts and good character could not help him from making a bad decision that ultimately changed his life forever - opened up the eyes of their adolescent audience about the harsh reality of living with a disease that has no cure. “I was just like you, sitting in an audience listening to a speaker from Love Heals thinking,

‘that will never happen to me’,” said one of the speakers. “I was a straight A student who always did the right thing…then why is it that with all this knowledge, did I still put myself at risk? I think it’s because we all want to be seen, to be validated and to fit in. That’s normal. But to what point?” he asked his audience. At 27 years old, I have to fight every single day; I go to doctors and take medication on a routine basis….It only takes one time. The decision you make today will affect your tomorrow.”

Stressing the need for students to take responsibility for themselves, they pointed to the longevity of the virus, now in its fourth decade, and the more than 70 million people that have been impacted. Among the state’s suburbs, Nassau and Suffolk counties have the highest number of new cases of HIV/AIDS in New York State. In an effort to educate students about the dangers of risky behavior, a combination of skits, interactive lessons, guest speakers, videos and

grades were taught basic hygiene practices and those in the upper grades learned about how HIV/ AIDS is a difficult disease to contract and how to be compassionate to those infected. The lessons were reinforced with a takehome activity to facilitate discussions in the home. To spread awareness among the community, a public viewing of panels from the World AIDS Quilt was hosted at Massapequa High School where peer educators were on hand to answer questions for visitors.

At the middle and high school level, powerful lessons on how the disease is contracted and what students can do to protect themselves were delivered by student Peer Educators under the guidance of physical education/health certified teacher Michael La Bella. Students learned important information about how the disease spreads and were given resources, such as where to get tested. On the elementary level, students in the lower

Student Art Show

Students from Birch Lane and Fairfield elementary schools currently have their artwork on display at Massapequa Perk, located at 117 Front Street, Massapequa Park.

The opening for this exhibit was held on December 10th. Artwork from grades 1-6 will be available for viewing until December 19th. This is an annual exhibit

put together by Massapequa School District art teachers Melinda Wolfe and Dorothy Veltre in collaboration with Massapequa Perk. Pictured by the display are Birch Lane students.

SPREADING HOLIDAY CHEER - 25 year-old country singer and Pretty Little Liars actress Lucy Hale visited patients at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital on Monday, December 8th. Lucy delivered toys that were collected at the MyCountry96.1 FM’s (JVC Broadcasting) 4th Annual Secret Holiday Show, signed autographs and took photos with the children. Lucy, along with MyCountry’s 96.1 FM’s Phathead and JVC Broadcasting’s Vice President Vic Latino visited the pediatric hematology/oncology unit at Stony Brook University Cancer Center and the pediatric units at the hospital and put big smiles on a lot of children’s faces.
