Fourth-grade students at Unqua Elementary School in Massapequa School District learned about Native Americans as the Journeys Into American Indian Territory traveling museum came to the school on November 28th-29th. The program began with a video focusing on different aspects of Native American culture. Presenters Maddi Cheers and Richie Cornacchio then led a follow-up discussion and answered questions about Native

As part of the traveling museum, students were able to walk through a model of a longhouse, view artifacts such as clothing, baskets and dolls, bang on a drum and use a corn pounder. They learned how hunting parties were formed to gather food and about the origins of a popular Native American sport - lacrosse. In another room, students played traditional games. They learned Atenaha, a game of chance

Journey Into the Past which involved throwing dice onto a piece of deer skin, and Ring and Pin, which had a small circle attached to a stick by a string and was designed to improve hand-eye coordination. The Journeys program is held at all elementary schools in the Massapequa School District throughout the school year. It supports the fourth-grade social studies curriculum, which centers on the history of New York state and Long Island.

family fun. The students in the Town’s ice skating program are amazingly talented and are sure to entertain the audience. The Holiday on Ice Show will also feature other highly accomplished skaters who are sure to

dazzle the audience with their grace and skill. In addition to figure skating, there will be other holiday themed activities including an exhibition hockey game between the Elves and the Reindeer, which are

two teams with players from the Town of Oyster Bay Tot Hockey program. And the star of the season, Santa Claus, will make his annual visit to the Ice Skating Center. Santa will skate a lap or two around the rink and then

The Helping Hands Club at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus continues to live up to its mission of community service. This holiday season, it is lending a helping hand to the children at the Eastern Nassau Head Start Early Education Center by collecting new pajamas and books. Approximately 40 ninthgraders will go to the Head Start school in Wantagh on December 20th and give each child one pair of

pajamas. The children will also get to pick a book to keep, but first one of the Helping Hands members will read it to them. The club collected more than 300 pairs of pajamas and 500 books last year, and is hoping to exceed that total this December, as Helping Hands members have been working hard to promote the cause by making fliers and speaking to classes. Extra donations will be given to the Pajama Program to benefit children throughout the

country. “It’s important to give to others who aren’t as fortunate as us,” said student Alexa Mangione. “It feels absolutely wonderful to have the opportunity to do this. Through the school, we’re able to have the power to help people.” Club members have previously held backto-school supply drives, volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House and made emergency kits.

students will participate in a walkathon with proceeds going to the local Yes Community Counseling Center. Pearsall visited on December 5th, the first time the One School, One Book author has come to Berner. During assemblies for each grade, she talked about the writing and editing process, coming up with ideas for books and how to become a published author. She then met with

students from the Berner Beacon newspaper and Poetry Slam for a question and answer session before taking part in a book discussion with parents and students. Eighth-grader and Beacon writer Kieran Winthrop said he enjoyed not only learning more about the meaning of her book, but about the practice and patience needed to become a good writer. He said the best

advice she gave was to find examples of good writing to model, and not to be afraid to take risks. “Our goal is to create a community of readers,” said Executive Assistant to the Principal Theresa Donohue, who coordinates the One School, One Book initiative. “For the students to meet the author and to be able to ask questions, it just makes it more personal and more meaningful.”

Author Shelley Pearsall’s book “The Seventh Most Important Thing” has made its mark on readers of all ages at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District. As part of the One School, One Book initiative, all students and staff read the story and recently heard from the children’s writer. This is the third year the school has participated in the initiative. Each book is selected by the Shared Decision Making Team of administrators, teachers, students and parents, and must relate to character education. Pearsall’s book includes messages of friendship, forgiveness and redemption. All students received a copy on the first day of school, and were encouraged to read it within a month. When that didn’t happen, I switched to a trip to Disney World to “meet Mickey & Minnie Mouse.” Lofty goals for a child, to be sure… but nothing a visit to a department store Santa, list of wishes in hand, couldn’t fix. As I grew older, there were the latest Barbie dolls, electronic gadgets and toys to be had – the “fun” stuff. I remember that tinge of disappointment when I would spy shirt boxes wrapped under the tree, knowing it likely meant clothing. Yawn. How funny the way our perceptions change as we age.

Eventually, the clothes and accessories and latest trends were more appreciated, complemented with stocking stuffers of CDs and DVDs and maybe even a pair of tickets to an upcoming concert or ballgame. Then came the gift card phase, those years of wanting to head out on my own post-holiday shopping spree in lieu of putting any real thought into a Christmas wish list. And so it remains, for the most part, to this day. Aside from a few token “musthave” toy crazes that erupt each holiday season, even the children of today seem perfectly content to collect money and gift cards from their relatives and either squirrel it away or splurge on

their own special selection. Gone is the element of surprise, of wonderment, of eager anticipation of what might appear under the tree on Christmas morning. And so, too, is some of the innocence, the childish delight. How nice it would be to recapture an element of that, especially in this day and age. This Christmas, perhaps the focus should be not on what’s under the tree, but rather those around it… the true reason for the season, after all. This year, there is nothing in particular I want, other than to spend it with my loved ones and cherish the moments and the memories to be made. That’s my list, short and sweet.

The Long Island Fight for Charity, one of Long Island’s largest and most anticipated annual networking events and fund raisers to support local charities, held its 13th Main Event on November 21st. The event fight card listed 9 bouts featuring 18 business professionals who volunteered to train to be Charity Boxers. They went toe-to-toe with opponents in the boxing ring to the cheers of a sold-out crowd. There is no other charity event like this anywhere in the country. The Massapequa School District observed World AIDS Day on December 1st with several educational programs throughout the week designed to inform students about the effects of HIV and AIDS. During physical education classes at Massapequa High School and Berner Middle School, Peer AIDS Educators performed skits for their fellow students, sharing AIDS-related facts such as how the disease is transmitted, what behavior puts people at risk, and how to live with it. The trained student performers from the high school presented the information in an engaging way that allowed their peers to understand the severity of the health crisis. The Alison Gertz Foundation presented its Love Heals assembly at the high school’s Ames Campus on December 2nd. Niko Flowers and Jahlove Serrano shared their personal stories of

living with HIV, and told ninth-graders how to take the proper precautions to avoid contracting the disease. The Names Project provided two large quilt panels at each secondary school, which were displayed for the week. Each panel consisted of pieces that were made in honor of someone who died because of AIDS. A public viewing was held in

She explained that even though advancements in medicine allow people with AIDS to live much longer than they used to, it is still a very difficult to disease to manage and can be very costly. “We don’t want our kids to get this horrific disease,” said Ms. Baldinger. “It is 100 percent preventable.”

Massapequa High School is doing its part to make sure that everyone has a friend. Art and technology students recently completed a buddy bench for McKenna Elementary School, and if a child ever needs a friend during recess, they sit on it and someone comes over to be their companion. The project took several months to complete. Artists in Penny Schneider’s sculpture class came up with ideas and built models out of cardboard before the children of McKenna voted on the winning design, which includes stars and rainbows. It was then constructed by students in James DeSantis’s

technology class, and painted by the high school artists. It is called a koda bench, which is the Native American word for friend, fitting for a district that is the home of the Chiefs. McKenna is the fourth elementary school in the district to receive a bench made by the high school students. Ms. Schneider said this an example of the spirit of collaboration that exists in the district. The project also served as a lesson in the design process for the young artists and builders, while encouraging their creativity. “For my students, it makes them feel great

about themselves that they did something so positive,” she said. “I think they did an awesome job. They’re giving back to the schools that they came from.” McKenna Elementary School Principal Dr. Amanda Lowry said she was thankful for the hard work of the high school students and welcomes the new addition to the school. “The purpose of the bench is for it to be a safe place for children who need someone to play with to meet up with a new companion,” she said. “It is a symbol of friendship and smiles. McKenna Elementary students are thrilled.”

The guest speaker, who works for the Hanger Clinic which makes prosthetics and orthotics, spoke with students in the anatomy and physiology and Advanced Placement

biology courses on December 2nd. Ms. Wisler explained that the industry has made great advancements in the past 20 years, discussing how people are able to live normal lives with replacement limbs created by prosthetists. She even talked to students about Winter, a dolphin with a prosthetic tail.

Students learned about the education needed to become a prosthetist, the college that offer a program, pre-requisite skills that can be learned in high school classes, and volunteer and internship opportunities. Science teacher Robert Gariglio said the purpose of her visit was to open the eyes of students to a career possibility. He said
