The Massapequa School District will launch its redesigned website on Friday, December 22nd. The web address, www. msd.k12.ny.us, will remain the same. The website will be fully compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. It will be a dynamic site that will be optimized for mobile devices, and visitors will be able to access information with fewer clicks. The new

site retains many popular items including an events calendar, staff directory, school lunch menus, news and announcements, the Insight newsletter and access to learning resources. New subscriptions will be required for users who wish to receive district and school email blasts. The district will be sending out email reminders to all current website subscribers, informing

them of the sign-up process, which will begin prior to the new site being launched. “I believe our new website will provide visitors with a positive and informative district experience,” said Executive Director for Technology and General Administration Bryan Piotrowski. “I am very excited about the new design, improved functionality and enhanced content.”

Massapequa High School’s Mock Trial teams recently took part in competitions that gave students practical experience in the law ﬁeld. The “A” team, led by social studies teacher Daniel Bachman, attended the Harvard Mock Trial High School Seminar Program. Students received information on a case, and then had two days to prepare. Massapequa’s team defeated a team from Georgia in arguments. The students went on to the Mentor Moot Court Tournament, which featured a mock Supreme Court argument. Massapequa advanced to the semiﬁnals. The team is now preparing for the Nassau County Bar Association’s mock trial competition which will be held in February at the county courthouse and features a singleelimination-style format. The team has been

competing in this event for decades and won the county championship in 2012. The “B” team, under the leadership of social studies teacher John Pardue, went to Times Square for the five-day Empire Mock Trial, an event hosted by the American Bar Association that featured 36 teams from several countries. Arguments took place at the Southern District Courthouse with experienced judges and lawyers evaluating each team’s performance. Junior Antoinette Corigliano, one of the captains of the “B” team, who played the role of lead defense attorney, won an Outstanding Attorney Award. She ranked sixth overall out of more than 240 students who qualified. She said being a member of Mock Trial helps build her confidence and improve her public speaking abilities.

Many of Massapequa’s Mock Trial students are enrolled in the high school’s Introduction to Law courses offered through the social studies department. Practices are held in the law classroom which is designed to resemble a courtroom. EAGLE SCOUT ACHIEVEMENT - Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently joined with Nassau County Legislator Rose Marie Walker, Nassau County Legislator Steven D. Rhoads and Commander Dennis Dietrich at the Eagle Scout Court of Honor Ceremony for Francis Grunseich and Edward Allan Parlato, Jr. of Troop 691. Both from North Massapequa, Eagle Scout is the highest honor a Boy Scout can achieve after completing hours of community service and attaining numerous merit badges. The Massapequa School District marked AIDS Awareness Week from November 27th through December 1st with a series of educational activities for students and the community. Members of Massapequa High School’s Peer AIDS Educators Club presented a series of skits for seventh- and eighthgraders at Berner Middle School during their physical education classes. The age-appropriate skits focused on ways to prevent transmission of the disease. The club also did

a series of AIDS awareness presentations for their peers at the high school. The Names Project provided large quilt panels at Berner, the high school and the Ames Campus, which were displayed throughout the week. Each panel consisted of pieces that were made in honor of someone who died because of AIDS. A public viewing was held in the high school auditorium on the evening of November 30th. The New York State Education Department mandates AIDS awareness as part of the health

curriculum, kindergarten through 12th grade. Massapequa coincides AIDS Awareness Week with World AIDS Day, which is observed on December 1st. “Instead of a just giving them a handout or showing them a video, we get students to teach their peers about HIV and AIDS,” said high school health teacher Michael LaBella, adviser of the Peer AIDS Educators Club. “It’s a more meaningful lesson, and students get an education that they can carry with them for their rest of their lives.”

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Thomas P. Hand announced that a special drive called “Helping through the Holidays,” will be launched at all three of the Town’s ice skating facilities. Christmas Conundrums And just like that, it’s less than two weeks until Christmas. No sooner did I unpack my infamous Christmas closet and brace myself for the avalanche of décor which poured forth, then I must now begin to contemplate how in the world I’m going to ﬁt everything back where I found it. ’Tis the season, indeed, short as it may be. I’m sure I am not alone in discovering that, upon surveying the annual spread of lights and battery-operated trinkets, there are always some casualties carried over from the previous holiday season lights that no longer twinkle, animated knick knacks that have become somewhat more stationary, garland that was torn by the wind… whatever the case may be. This year, remembering I had taken my remaining lights and

tossed them in the trash in frustration somewhere between Christmas ’16 and the dropping of the ball in Times Square, I knew I was in the market for replacements. Of course, not having measured prior to heading to the store, I was forced to guess at what might ﬁt. Once home, I found that A) the strand of lights barely stretched across the window frame, necessitating an extension cord to reach the outlet; B) the multi-colored assortment I had chosen came with a fun bonus feature, a “twinkling” variation leaving me constantly squinting to be sure I wasn’t hallucinating; and C) the best part of all, the frequent sound of the entire strand falling from the top of the window, as a few strategically placed pieces of

tape gave way. Every. Single. Night. On the hour, at least. How many days until Christmas? And with that, I have yet to begin the process of shopping, planning the Christmas Eve menu, or mailing out my photo card creations - another debacle if ever there was one. Suffice to say, in my haste to choose pictures and arrange them in the template I had selected, I neglected to “flip” the card over and notice it was, in fact, a postcard. How very traditional. Season’s Greetings from my apartment, where Christmas rarely goes off without a hitch, the lights never stop blinking, and the closet door may indeed fall off its hinges before the final present is wrapped. Darn, wrapping paper.
