he literature of multiple languages was celebrated at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District, which hosted its 8th annual World Languages Read Aloud. Throughout each day, French, German, Mandarin and Spanish teachers brought their classes into the library to share stories, primarily focusing on children’s literature, including stories that have been translated from English.

Journey Into the Past Fourth-grade students at Unqua Elementary School om Massapequa School District learned about Native Americans as the Journeys Into American Indian Territory traveling museum came to the school on November 28th29th. The program began with a video focusing on different aspects of Native American culture. Presenters Maddi Cheers and Richie Cornacchio then led a follow-up discussion and answered questions about Native

American life past and present. As part of the traveling museum, students were able to walk through a model of a longhouse, view artifacts such as clothing, baskets and dolls, bang on a drum and use a corn pounder. They learned how hunting parties were formed to gather food and about the origins of a popular Native American sport - lacrosse. In another room, students played traditional games. They learned Atenaha, a game of chance

which involved throwing dice onto a piece of deer skin, and Ring and Pin, which had a small circle attached to a stick by a string and was designed to improve hand-eye coordination. The Journeys program is held at all elementary schools in the Massapequa School District throughout the school year. It supports the fourth-grade social studies curriculum, which centers on the history of New York state and Long Island.

Oyster Bay Town Councilwomen Rebecca M. Alesia and Michele M. Johnson announced that the Town is accepting nomination forms for the annual “Women of Distinction” awards program. “Each year, the Town recognizes exceptional recipients in each of eight categories,” Councilwoman Alesia said. “Since the program’s inception, the Town is privileged to have honored more than 140 designees.” “The Town Board recognizes the winners at a special ceremony held in honor of women’s history month,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “Nominees can either live or work in the Town of Oyster Bay.” The Councilwomen noted that nomination forms have been mailed to local community organizations, all local libraries, and are available on the Town’s website, www.oysterbaytown.com.

Anybody is welcome to submit an application, including those who have done so in the past and whose candidates were not selected. Women who either live or work in the Town of Oyster Bay may be nominated in the following categories: 1) Arts: Woman who has contributed to the cultural life of the community through theatre, dance, music, art or literature. 2) Business: Professional woman in a position as owner, CEO or high-level manager of a business or industry. 3) Community and Civic Affairs: A leader, supervisor, administrator, manager or member who has made a contribution to the community. 4) Education: A woman educator, administrator or director of a public or private institution of learning who has been outstanding in the field. 5) Government:

Social Media Awareness Ninth-graders at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus learned about the responsible use of social media during a workshop on November 21st. They heard from Katie Schumaker, founder of the Don’t Press Send Campaign and author of cyber education book “Don’t Press Send.” Ms. Schumaker told students that before they post something online, they should first ask themselves if it is thoughtful, helpful, inspiring, necessary and kind. She warned them that there is no privacy

online and to avoid posting any information they wouldn’t want a stranger to know. Additionally, she touched on cyber bullying and spoke of the ramifications of sending explicit messages and photos. Students also learned about healthy cell phone habits, and were encouraged to turn their phones off when they are doing their homework. After speaking to the entire student body, Ms. Schumaker held small group discussions with class officers and members

All ninth-graders went home with cyber safety sheets, and an evening program was held for parents. “Every student uses some form of social media, and the purpose of this program was to teach them how to use it responsibly,” said Principal Jordan McCaw. “It is important to create an awareness that what they say and send can have real consequences. I think Ms. Schumaker’s words made an impact.”

GENERAL MEETING NOTICE

Signs of the Times American Sign Language students in the Massapequa School District are using technology to improve their communication skills. With the program Flipgrid, students are making short videos using only sign language. The district’s oneto-one Chromebook initiative, which puts a device in the hands of all secondary students, allows students and teachers to take advantage of online resources like Flipgrid. Teacher Patricia McCarthy creates videos posing

simple questions in sign language, such as “What are you doing for the weekend?” Students then respond by making their own videos, which can be done at school or at home on the Chromebooks, which have built in cameras. All students can view the videos made by their classmates and are encouraged to respond to each other. By continuing a dialogue through Flipgrid, students improve their sign language comprehension. They can also watch their

own videos to critique themselves. “It helps us practice and communicate,” said Thomas Angelone, a ninthgrader in ASL Level 1 at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus. “We can learn from watching other kids sign.” Approximately 250 students are enrolled in ASL classes, levels 1 through 4, at Massapequa High School’s Ames and main campuses. The high school also offers an American Sign Language club.

Christmas has always been one of my favorite holidays. From when I was a child, there was something about the twinkling lights, the anticipation of a first snowfall, and of course the presents under the tree that evoked just a bit of… magic, really. All these years later, some of the mystery may be gone, but the sentiment remains the same. As this particular holiday season approached, it was difficult not to let some of the melancholy feelings seep in. This has been a year of multiple losses and sadness for my family, and somehow the thought of “celebrating” seemed wrong and, well, downright impossible. How to carry on traditions when so

much has changed… For me, even the prospect of decorating, a task I had always looked forward to with great enthusiasm, had lost some of its luster. Was it appropriate? Was it worth going through all the trouble of digging out boxes, climbing stepladders and assembling a tree when my heart wasn’t truly in it? I didn’t know. As the weeks passed and Thanksgiving came and went, I needed to make a decision; and so, I reached a compromise of sorts. Having recently had the privilege to inherit some of my grandparents’ more prized Christmas decorations – including several gorgeous, hand-painted ceramic figurines made by my grandmother – I decided it would only be right to display them.

And so, I set out to find that happy medium, of honoring all the wonderful memories I had compiled from years past – but not going overboard. I chose to keep it simple… white lights in the windows, greenery outside, and special emphasis on all those holiday tokens I had acquired from Grandma and Grandpa’s house. There will be plenty of years to go all out, to deck the halls from top to bottom with flashy colored lights and six-foot trees and tinsel and holly galore. But not this year. This year, I choose to focus on family – on those who are no longer with us, and on those we are still so lucky to be celebrating with. Here’s to remembering what’s most important at this time of year, and always.

Tax Exemption Filings duty while serving in the United States Armed Forces during a period of war, as defined in NYS Real Property Tax Law. Physically Disabled Tax Reduction Program for Home Improvements is granted to those persons who are physically disabled and meet the criteria. It is equal to the amount of any increase in value of property attributable to improvements made for the purpose of facilitating and accommodating the use and accessibility of the property. Persons With Disabilities and Limited Incomes Partial Property Tax Exemption is available to eligible applicants who have a physical or mental impairment, not due to use of alcohol or illegal drug use, that substantially limits that person’s ability to engage in one or more major life activities, such as caring for one’s self, performing manual tasks, walking, seeing, hearing, speaking, breathing, learning or working. The requirements to qualify are based on the person’s disability, ownership, residency and occupancy status, and income. Persons with incomes less than $37,400 can qualify to receive an exemption from 5% to 50%. Home Improvement Exemption is an eight-year decreasing exemption on alterations, reconstructions or improvements that increase the assessed value of a one or two family home. In the first year, 100 percent of the assessed value of the improvement is exempt. In the second year, 87.5 percent, in the third year, 75 percent and

so on. Certain eligibility requirements must be met to participate in this program. 1st Time Home Buyers of Newly Constructed Homes may apply for and receive a partial real property tax exemption. The maximum exemption is offered over five years, starting with a 50 percent exemption the first year and phasing to 10 percent in the fifth and final year. Homebuyers are subject to certain price and income limits set by the State of New York Mortgage Agency (SONYMA). Volunteer Firefighter and Ambulance Worker Exemption is available to eligible firefighters and ambulance workers. Up to 10 percent reduction in the assessed value of their property can be obtained to volunteers who have served at least five years in a Town of Oyster Bay Fire Department in which they reside. Certain eligibility requirements must be met to participate in this program. Property Tax Exemption (New York State School Tax Relief) exemption is available to senior citizen homeowners who are 65 years of age or older during the year in which the exemption takes effect, and whose annual income does not exceed $86,000. Senior citizens whose annual income exceeds $86,000 will still be eligible for the Basic STAR exemption. Current Enhanced Star Exemption recipients will keep their exemption as long as they continue to own their current homes. Current recipients who are not enrolled in the Income Verification Program must continue to file renewal application with the Department of Assessment each year. Senior Citizen exemption provides a tax savings for individuals over the age of 65, whose income is less than $37,400. To participate and receive this tax savings (between 5% and up to 50% reduction on certain county, town and school district property taxes) specific qualification criteria must be met. Veterans Exemption is for those individuals who rendered service to our country during wartime. The eligibility to receive this exemption and amount to be exempted depends upon the time, duration and type of service, along with other criteria. Cold War Veterans Exemption is for veterans who served during the Cold War period. The Law also provides an additional exemption to disabled veterans. Coschignano to announce the annual kick-off of this year’s “Toys for Tots” collection drive, which will run through December 15th, in an effort to collect new, unwrapped toys to be used as gifts for children throughout the community. “Under the direction of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, the ‘Toys for Tots’ Drive follows a mission to help ensure that children in need, within our area, do not have to go the holiday season without something to bring them happiness,” Councilman Coschignano said. “By helping those in need experience the wonderful embrace of the holiday season, contributors will get to play an active role in bringing happiness to one of our nation’s most valuable resources for the future, our children,” Councilman Macagnone said. Students and staff at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District filled 10 shopping carts worth of food, which will benefit those in need in the local community. The Student Council organized the school’s annual Thanksgiving food drive, collecting nonperishable LIGHTING THE SEASON - Mayor Jeffrey P. Pravato and the Board of Trustees, items for the food pantry at along with Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus, Rudolph and Frosty, welcomed the holiday season St. Rose of Lima Catholic by lighting the Menorah and Christmas Tree at the Village of Massapequa Park’s Annual Church. Adviser Denise Robertson said that the food will benefit families for Thanksgiving and will also help keep the food pantry stocked well into December. Student Council member Gabrielle Grossfeld added that the food drive was important to ensure everyone in the community had an enjoyable Thanksgiving. “The generosity of

Leader of Languages Elementary Schools pilot program, which provides Spanish instruction to third-graders. Under his leadership, the district has partnered with the Asia Society Confucius Classrooms Network which led to the creation, expansion and ongoing support of Massapequa’s Mandarin Chinese course program. The Remunda Cadoux Award, named for the creator of one of the earliest state syllabi for foreign language education, is presented annually to a New York State Association of Foreign Language Teachers member who embodies the leadership skills that Cadoux did. “It’s hard to conceive receiving an award after only 12 years as an administrator,” Mr. Anderson said. “I love what I do because of the amazing teachers, students and parents with whom I

work each and every day. I am honored and truly humbled.” For his nomination, Mr. Anderson received letters of support from Superintendent Lucille F. Iconis, Assistant to the Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Thomas Fasano, and World Language teachers. Leading the Way Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus has launched the first chapter of Active Minds, Inc. at a public high school in New York State. The organization is the nation’s only nonprofit organization dedicated to utilizing the student voice to raise mental health awareness. The goal of Active Minds is to promote a dialogue about mental health issues and educate students about available resources in and around the community. Although this organization is typically found on college campuses, two staff members at Ames heard about it and gained approval from Massapequa School District administrators, along with support from the Massapequa Takes Action Committee, to pilot

the student club on a high school level. Social worker Kim Hession and guidance counselor Courtney Mollura have generated great interest among the ninth-graders at Ames, as they felt strongly about creating a positive culture at school and in the community by reducing stigma and encouraging others to talk about mental health and wellness effectively. In the chapter’s first year, students organized a “Laugh More, Stress Less” Campaign aimed at increasing awareness of the stressors teens face and the impact stress has on health and wellness. In addition, students used the children’s book “Flower and Bubbles” by Allison C. Siegel to

create a powerful lesson on relaxation and coping with difficult emotions for kindergartners at the adjacent Lockhart Elementary School. Other events and activities included participating in Adelphi University’s “Voices Guiding Choices” substance abuse prevention summit, and a Mental Health Awareness Week in May. The ninth-grade students who started the Active Minds chapter have now moved on to the main campus and are continuing their work under the leadership of school social workers Joanne Waters and Diane Marascia. Current ninth-graders continue to keep the chapter running strong at Ames with a long list of activities and events already in progress.

William Anderson, the World Languages and English as a New Language curriculum associate for the Massapequa School District, recently received the Remunda Cadoux Award for Leadership in Foreign Language Supervision. Mr. Anderson, who began as a Spanish teacher at Massapequa High School in 1998, has served in his current position since 2008 and oversees more than 30 teachers. He supervises the district’s ENL program and the World Languages program at Berner Middle School, Massapequa High School and the Ames Campus, where offerings include French, German, Mandarin Chinese and Spanish, as well as Italian and American Sign Language as electives. Adopt-a-Battalion Students at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District were thinking beyond themselves and their own community as they recently collected items to benefit members of the U.S. armed forces. The school participated in the Adopt-A-Battalion campaign and collected items such as food, candy, socks and toiletries for

the troops. The idea came from sixth-grader Carolyn Smith, who said that it feels good to help others. She was pleased with the number of items collected in two weeks. “Proud to Be an American Day,” with students dressing up in red, white and blue and each donating a dollar to help offset the shipping cost of the boxes full of supplies. “Miss Smith did an amazing job and I’m very proud of her,” said Student Government adviser Brian Mulcahy. “We have a great school when it comes to stuff like this.”

The literature of multiple languages was celebrated at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District, which hosted its eighth annual World Languages Read Aloud on November 22nd and 23rd. Throughout each day, French, German, Mandarin and Spanish teachers brought their classes into the library to share stories, primarily focusing on children’s literature, including stories that have been translated from

English and books original to other languages. A group of students read the Spanish version of “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?” with each reading the part of a different animal. Students and teachers also read books in languages they speak at home such as Italian, Greek, Hebrew, Portuguese and Russian. A few students did their selections in American Sign Language. “The read aloud provides

an opportunity to hear, or see, other languages in an enjoyable format and at the same time promotes the love of reading so important to all academic subjects,” said world languages teacher Janice Kincaid, who organized the event. “Students not only had the opportunity to apply their new skills in a second language, but they also had the opportunity to learn about the other languages offered by our program.”
