he North Massapequa Fire Department’s 42nd annual Raga-Muffin Costume Parade was recently held on North Broadway in North Massapequa. For more than four decades, the department has hosted this fun and festive event. Over the years, hundreds of children and their parents have marched in the parade, enjoyed refreshments and participated in a raffle for bicycles and other great prizes.

November. No sooner has the last of the Halloween candy been given out to the neighborhood trick-ortreaters, than we are faced with the prospect of preparing for the next festive occasion on the calendar… Christmas, apparently. Year after year, the interval of time between the two seems to evaporate into a void of shopping, decorating, cooking and caroling, forgetting the small fact that there exists another holiday in between. I understand that, for some, Thanksgiving doesn’t have the same “fun” appeal to children and adults alike. There are no costumes, no Santa Claus, no presents to speak of… and yet, that is precisely what makes the day so uniquely special.

The entire point, in fact, is to be grateful for that which we have – family, friends, health, happiness – and not be caught up in the materialism that tends to overtake every other occasion. It’s not about the meal, or the football, or the Black Friday shopping deals that continue to creep into Thursday; it’s about the company you spend the day celebrating with. This is the case no matter the holiday, of course; but on Thanksgiving, we tend to step back and appreciate it just a bit more. Or we should. So to all those who enjoy shopping at the mall while being serenaded by Christmas carols over the stores’ PA systems… there will be plenty of time for that beginning on November 25th. Until

More than 7,000 Massapequa School District students cast their votes for president of the United States, an exercise that encouraged them to become part of the democratic process when they become adults. The online votes were cast through the Youth Leadership Initiative, an online resource for civics teachers through the University of Virginia. From October 17th27th, students in all grades and all buildings in the district voted for president, U.S. senator and congressman. “I thought it was important for all students in the district to vote because civic engagement is a part of the social studies curriculum at every level,” said Brian Trapani, the district’s curriculum associate for social studies. “There’s no more authentic way

than to have students participate in a mock election during a presidential year.” When the results came in, Republican candidate Donald Trump won at each of the nine buildings, besting Democrat Hillary Clinton and third-party candidates Jill Stein and Gary Johnson. The student voters also favored incumbent Sen. Charles Schumer at seven schools and Congressman Peter King across the district. Before the vote, teachers discussed the election with students using resources such as PBS Kids and Junior Scholastic. In the younger grades, teachers gave a little background on each candidate and discussed what it means to be president, while in the older grades there was much more discussion on the issues and positions

Students Have Sole

A Massapequa High School student has embraced the giving spirit embodied by so many in the school community and picked up where a recent graduate left off by running a sneaker drive for the homeless. Jaden Gil, a 10th-grader at the high school’s main campus, is spearheading the Sole Survivors collection drive. Students and staff are asked to donate their lightly used sneakers,

which will be given to the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless. A donation cage has been set up in the main lobby and every time it fills up, the sneakers are donated. The idea was started by former Massapequa High School student Jake Rosenblum, a 2016 graduate, who started the nonprofit organization Sole Survivors and collected hundreds of sneakers in two years.
