Of Foliage and Fuzzy Friends as luck would have it, there happens to be one fairly large tree right in front of my apartment, with branches that - until recently - stretched nearly to my second-floor balcony. Every autumn, like clockwork, I would find hordes of acorns - piles, literally - on my deck each morning. Curious how they all happened to “fall” in this one area, I observed one particular squirrel as he made the rounds from branch to branch, fervently shaking each one until he had dislodged each and every nut. Some would fall down below, where he would eagerly gather them and begin digging holes to store them away; the rest, apparently, seemed to settle among my plants upstairs. Each day, I would sweep the acorns off the side of the deck and, peering over the railing, would see my little fuzzy visitor eagerly waiting to collect them. It became something of a routine, and I was only too happy to help him in his pursuit (and clear off my deck in the process). One morning, I awoke to the sound of buzzing and looked outside to see the landscape company trimming many of the trees and shrubs in the area, including “my” tree. Horrified, I looked at the now nearly-barren branches and wondered what had
become of my little fluffy-tailed companion. Was he swept away with the pile of discarded branches? Had he been permanently displaced from his chosen home? What had become of all the acorns he had yet to gather? Mildly concerned, I wondered if I would ever see him again. A few days passed, with still no sign. The next night, when I returned home from work, I decided to dine outside. It was one of those late Autumn evenings when the air was still mild and the sun had yet to set, casting a golden glow over all that the light touched. As I ate, I was startled by the sound of scurrying, and looked up to see my little fuzzy friend scampering up and down the emaciated tree, picking up the acorns that had fallen and galloping down the pathway to bury them in the tiny hole he had dug. I smiled, glad to see he was alright, despite his slightly-mangled home. Not quite a puppy, but a member of the adopted family nonetheless. A few weeks later, it seemed the acorns had all been accounted for. As I watered my mum plants, I saw something wedged between the flowers. Curious, I peered between the stems to find a single peanut shell. I guess this means he’s moving in for the winter.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always wanted a “furry” pet of some kind, be it a puppy, kitten, bunny, even a guinea pig. Of course, once I moved into my own apartment and realized that such fuzzy companions require far more attention than I, as a full-time member of the workforce, can provide, I settled for my beloved little Buddy the Betta - and, following his passing, my new baby Betta, Norton von Spudly. Not exactly furry, but still fairly entertaining and interactive as fish go. Perhaps I should mention that, in the apartment complex where I reside, one tends to come across all sorts of creatures, from stray cats and kittens wandering the property, to turtles and fish by the pond, robins and blue jays and other assorted winged folk, and even the occasional baby fox roaming near the dumpster. And squirrels. We can’t forget our bushy-tailed friends who spend the majority of the seasons scurrying from tree to tree in search of acorns to munch on and, once the weather begins to turn chilly, store away for winter. My particular building is fairly set apart from the trees and shrubbery which line some of the other, more shaded areas of the complex; however,

Custom Covers As students search for writing inspiration this year, they won’t have to look very far. Second-graders in Jennifer Lidonnici’s class at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District began the year by decorating the covers of their writing
notebooks. Through Writer’s Workshop, students learn about different styles of fiction and nonfiction writing, then practice their new skills by selecting their own topics. To come up with ideas throughout the school
year, their notebooks have been personalized to reflect their interests. Many children included pictures of family, friends and pets, logos of sports teams, images of toys and video games, and words that define their personalities.

Reading was on the mind of Berner Middle School students during summer vacation and they were recently rewarded for their efforts. The Massapequa school hosted a trio of bagel breakfasts for those who successfully completed the summer reading challenge which, according to Curriculum Associate for English Language Arts Mary O’Meara, was 95 percent of the school’s population. Each student had to complete a reflection on his or her chosen book, which served
as an “Admit One” ticket to the breakfast. Because so many students completed the challenge, separate breakfasts were held for sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders. Principal Jason Esposito, Executive Assistants to the Principal Barbara Lowell and Beth Mullins, and teachers handed out buttered bagels to the accomplished readers. Eighth-grader Kailinn Bernhardt said she read the book “Divergent” by Veronica Roth and said she chose it at the

Massapequa High School Ames Campus health teacher Michael LaBella wrote a new curriculum for his health class over the summer for students in the Life Skills program. The name of this new class is Go Green and the goal is to teach students
to be mindful consumers and to reduce, reuse and recycle everyday materials. Mr. LaBella recently showed students how to make compost with worms and food scraps that they gathered. In the coming months, students will add worms

Catapulting into Science Fourth-grade students at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District had to imagine that they were stranded on a desert island, and the only way to ward off pirates was to successfully build a catapult. To support the fourthgrade science curriculum, students are taking part in an eight-session enrichment unit on energy. Magnet/STEAM teacher Lindsay Cafiero worked with classroom teachers to design the lesson. Children were divided
into teams and given bags of supplies, which included Popsicle sticks, clothes pins, binder clips, bottle caps, different size rubberbands and a spoon. Each team had to look at the materials and decide how to construct a catapult that could launch marshmallows. Ms. Cafiero said that the project required following the engineering design process. Students on each team explored the materials and then collaborated to come up with a building plan. In
the coming weeks, teams from all fourth-grade classes will participate in a competition to see which catapults will fling the marshmallows the longest distance. “The students are going to have to decide which materials will help their projectiles go the furthest,” Ms. Cafiero said. “This project is so hands-on and so fun that they don’t realize how much learning they’re doing,” The second half of the energy unit will feature a truck-pull activity.

Cross Country Connection Technology allowed students at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District to connect with their peers across Nassau County and share their thoughts on literature. As part of the Global Read Aloud, an international literacy initiative, Kathy Pullen’s sixth-grade English language arts students participated in a videoconference with a sixth-grade class at
Willets Road School in the East Williston Union Free School District. The exchange, coordinated by Berner technology learning coach Danielle Mammolito, took place using FieldTripZoom. A webcam was set up on each end and video displayed through the Smart Board. The teachers took turns reading one of the 2017 Global Read Aloud choices, “Whoever You Are” by Mem Fox. It is a book
about being accepting of one another’s differences. After the reading, students went on their Chromebooks and shared their thoughts on the book, responding to the questions “What did you notice?” and “What do you wonder?” Through Padlet, they participated in a digital discussion by responding to each other’s posts.

Deborah, with a gradepoint average of 100.4, is planning to study biomedical engineering in college and pursue a career in medical research. Nicole, whose 99.26 GPA ranked second, hopes to study pediatric medicine. She has performed community service at regional hospitals. The pair have been actively involved in academic and extracurricular life at Massapequa High School. They have both taken 12 Advanced Placement
courses and are members of the Poparazzi orchestra group in which Deborah plays the viola and Nicole the cello. Deborah is president of Students Against Destructive Decisions and a member of the National Honor Society, the Research Club and the cheerleading squad. She also volunteers with her church’s youth group. To learn teamwork and cooperation, secondgraders at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District played a game called Spider Fighter in their physical education classes. Students were split into
groups of four and each team had to form a circle to protect a balloon. As they moved around the gymnasium, they had to protect their balloon from being popped by rival teams. If a balloon got away, students could not use their hands to retrieve
it. Physical education teachers Melissa Osborne and Mike Dellicurti said the purpose of this teambuilding activity was to teach students how good communication is necessary for success in sports.

Ms. Morgan said she wanted the adults to experience the same technology that their children will be using throughout the year. Flipgrid will support her classroom curriculum in many ways this year.
Students will create video reading logs by discussing their independent reading books and sharing their favorite passages. They will also discuss their science lessons, such as when they recently learned about forces and observed the principles in action during recess. “These short videos make it fun, and I can still keep track of what they’re learning,” Ms. Morgan said.
