On Tuesday evening, North Shore Child & Family Guidance Center hosted a fundraiser for its Children’s Center at Nassau County Family Court. The event was held at Tesoro’s Ristorante, located at 967 Old Country Road in Westbury, and featured Long Island singing sensation and recent television personality, Sal “The Voice” Valentinetti. Sal entertained the crowd with a selection of covers from the likes of the Rat Pack and Bobby Darin and was met with an enthusiastic reception. More than 60 guests came out to support the Children’s Center, and raised in excess of $13,000. The Children’s Center provides care and early learning to almost 2,000 children annually, ages 6 weeks-12 years, while their parents or guardians are in court. Executive Director Andrew Malekoff spoke about the positive impact of the Children’s Center in the community,

It’s been 15 years since I last set foot on the Edward Kienle Memorial Field as a member of the Lindenhurst Class of 2000. Fifteen years of living and learning and building a life based on the foundation set forth in the schools of good old Lindy, from the playgrounds of Daniel Street Elementary School all the way on up to the hallways of Lindenhurst High School. Each year, on Homecoming weekend, I return to the site where it all began – to reminisce, to reflect, and to soak in the autumn sun with some fellow alumni. Funny thing is, I rarely run into

anyone from my own class; mostly faculty, coaches, the occasional younger sibling of someone I went to school with… I suppose the novelty wears off after the first year or two, certainly once college has been completed and “real” life begins. But for me, it is and always will be, home. The field, the bleachers, the school… the crisp fall air that signals the start of football season, Homecoming floats parading down the street and the scent of concession stand goodies wafting through the air. Lindy pride on display in all its green and white glory, indeed. Sure, there is college Homecoming and all the

festivities that come along with it as well – but the connection is not nearly as strong as the one forged in the district I called home for 13 years, 13 formative years of discovering my passions in life and gaining the confidence to pursue them. Once a Bulldog, Always a Bulldog, as they say in Lindy. And so I will continue to sit on those bleachers and smile, and remember all the good times. I will cheer on the home team, no matter if I recognize the faces, and find comfort in the unique bond that we all share. I will reflect upon those friendships forged and those many special moments enjoyed through the years. Go Bulldogs!

National Honor for PCLI The Press Club of Long Island has been named a National Large Chapter of the Year by the Society of Professional Journalists. The North Massapequa Fire Department (NMFD) will be hosting its Annual Fire Prevention Open House on Sunday October 9th, at its headquarters, 1000 Broadway, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The 42nd Annual Children’s Rag-AMuffin Costume Parade will be held on Sunday, October 30th. The Children’s RagA-Muffin Costume Parade will start at 12 noon at the corner of North Nassau Avenue, process north on Broadway and conclude behind Fire Department Headquarters. There will be no rain date. All children who participate must be registered so they will be eligible for free prizes. “The Rag-A-Muffin Parade is always special,” explained NMFD Chief Fred Ferrara. “For more than four decades we have hosted this outstanding event, which has brought tremendous joy to our community’s families, and especially our young

people. Our department is extremely proud of this event and I know our residents are looking forward to many more years of the Rag-A-Muffin parade.” The event is always held the day before Halloween, which provides some extra atmosphere to an event already charged with excitement. “It’s a great day for the children,” Chief Ferrara said. “Kids can wear costumes before Halloween to make sure they’re ready for trick-ortreating. At McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, all students are artists. That’s why the school celebrated International Dot Day on September 20th, a worldwide sensation based on the book “The Dot” by Peter H. Reynolds. Art teacher Ellen Cervone had students make “dot” posters based on the book, and their creations were put on display in the school hallways. The book is about a student who

believes she is not an artist, but quickly learns that she is by starting with one dot on a piece of paper. Cervone’s students drew large circles on a poster board and worked in groups of four or five to fill them in with paint to create their dots. The designs and color choices were left up to the imaginations of the students. Before the children got started on their masterpieces, they saw a video of the Reynolds reading his book.

Making Masterpieces “It teaches the children to work as a collaborative group, which is really important in 21st-century learning,” Cervone said about doing the project for the second consecutive year. Cervone added that International Dot Day is about encouraging students to take chances and explore their potential. Many students don’t feel they are artists she said, but “there’s no right or wrong in art.”

With recent changes to the Regents designed to better reflect the common core, more students than ever are retaking the exams. This year more than 1,200 students are using RSS to prepare for the Common Core Algebra Regent Exam. In addition to critical academic support, RSS offers a full range of enrichment programs for younger students. There are classes in everything from reading, writing and science, to sports, art and music. Adventurous students can explore a variety of interests including television

Nassau BOCES Regional Summer School (RSS) completed another year of successful programming, helping Massapequa students to improve themselves in everything from core academics to the arts.
