TOWN DEDICATES BASKETBALL COURT - Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board recently dedicated a basketball court at Anchor Park in Massapequa in memory of Tyler James Abizeid, a beloved Massapequa teen who was only 14 years old when he passed away. Tyler, an avid sports fan, played basketball on the court being named in his honor the day he died. Tyler’s life was celebrated at a special dedication ceremony, including the gift of life he gave eight people through organ donation.

DISCUSSING RECENT SHARK ACTIVITY - Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele Johnson joined with researchers from the Stony Brook University School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences to discuss recent shark activity, as well as their efforts in studying sharks and tracking their movements in local waters.

Oyster Bay Town Clerk Richard LaMarca recently announced that residents who wish to deter any potential door-to-door solicitors and peddlers can obtain a free, waterproof, vinyl ‘No Soliciting’ sticker through the Town Clerk’s Office. Town Clerk LaMarca stated, “Now more than ever, our Town residents wish to remain unbothered at home by the potential nuisance of door-todoor peddlers. My office offers free ‘No Soliciting’ stickers to homeowners as a way to set clear boundaries with anyone approaching your home looking to do unwanted business. Contact us today for a free sticker.” Town Clerk LaMarca further cautioned residents to remember a few simple guidelines to help avoid any potential pitfalls of being taken in by a fast-talking peddler or solicitor. Residents are advised to check for a current Town-issued photo identification badge prior to doing any business with a door-to-door peddler. Photo ID issued by the Town Clerk’s Office is a good form of protection because it is issued only after an in-depth background check of the individual has been made and full disclosure of the nature of their business is provided. While nonprofit organizations are not required by law to have permits, Town Clerk LaMarca has urged these organizations to inform his office about when and where their members will be soliciting, with the information then forwarded to the local police precinct, along with the solicitor’s names. This provides residents with another way of checking any official status a solicitor may have. Councilwoman Johnson further explained that while shark attacks are extremely uncommon in our region, there are steps beachgoers can take to protect themselves and be careful in the water. “In addition to avoiding wearing shiny jewelry, not swimming during night or dusk hours, and not wandering off from shore, general precautions and common sense are often our most important tool when enjoying our ocean waters,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “Remember to stay safe and listen to the guidance of beach and lifeguard staff. We share our waters with some amazing creatures, and we just have to make sure we do so safely and appropriately.”

To accomplish their mission, they focus on pressing these goals: Prevention: Support, encouragement and education about a healthy lifestyle. Research: To promote legislation to increase funding for environmental research and provide funding for specific breast cancer projects. Education: Providing up-to-date information through their website, newsletter, information packets and education seminars. They offer adult and student awareness programs designed to help participants increase their awareness of Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Services: To offer breast and gynecological cancer patients services paid for and facilitated by WIBCC via the “Lend A Helping Hand” program. Lend A Helping Hand: The non-surgical modalities of treatment for breast cancer chemotherapy and radiation leave the patient in the need of a “Helping Hand”. Awareness: Breast Cancer is survivable.

Awareness of the treatments available is key to beating it.

As like many other nonprofit organizations, the WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program. WIBCC will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. As coronavirus continues to impact Long Islanders, growing health concerns along with the constant barrage of news is raising people’s anxiety. Catholic Health Services’s (CHS) mental health professionals offer ways we can reduce our stress during this time of uncertainty. This includes eating healthy, exercise, adequate sleep, virtually connecting with friends and family and reducing exposure to news and social media. “The constant ﬂow of information related to coronavirus can become overwhelming,” said Catholic Health Services Chairman of Behavioral Health Ronald Brenner, MD. “It’s important to take a break and step away from media reports and the constant scrolling through social channels.” Anxiety is a normal response to a stressful situation and can inspire adaptive behavior in many situations. However, when facing mounting uncertainty, the brain can go into an anxiety spiral and cause atypical reactions. Knowing the body’s physical reactions to the different types of anxiety is important.

The American Heart Association’s Long Island Heart Walk a Digital Experience

With the recent coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic keeping more Americans at home, the American Heart Association (AHA), the leading voluntary health organization focused on heart and brain health for all, is embracing the new normal and moving it’s iconic Long Island Heart Walk into a week-long digital experience. The Long Island Heart Walk is a fun and meaningful way to celebrate heart and stroke survivors, raise lifesaving funds and encourage physical activity. “Now, more than ever, we’re all looking for ways to connect with others, stay active and stay encouraged,” said Randy DeYulio, Managing Partner Deloitte & Touche LLP and Chair of the 2020 Long Island Heart Walk Digital Experience. “Our week-long digital experience allows everyone to continue to have fun and support our lifesaving mission, while adapting to spending more time at home. We are grateful for the support from our community and can’t wait to see how everyone makes the Heart Walk their own.” On Monday, September 28 – Saturday, October 3 Long Island Heart Walk participants and teams will not physically meet but are invited to get moving at home or around the neighborhood. Here are a few fun activities to consider choosing from: Take a walk outside (while following current social distancing guidelines). Get the whole family involved and have an indoor dance party. Try out a few

strengthening exercises like push-ups, lunges and squats. New York Blood Center Encourages Blood Donors To Schedule Appointments

New York Blood Center is calling on the community to make appointments to visit donor centers as COVID-19 has fundamentally changed the process of donating blood. Before COVID-19, mobile blood drives hosted by high schools, colleges, businesses and other organizations made up about 75% of the region’s incoming blood supply, but the number of blood drives has dropped by twothirds this year due to the pandemic. The upcoming school year presents new and unprecedented challenges. Blood donations are typically lower during the summer and the return to school usually helps make up the difference and stabilize the blood supply. In the past, school and college drives have resulted in 75,000 blood donations during each school year. “The pandemic is forcing us to rethink the entire landscape, which means encouraging donors to take the extra step of

making an appointment and traveling to a donor center. The loss of young donors is a particular challenge because our future blood supply is dependent on these firsttime donors becoming lifetime donors,” said Andrea H. Cefarelli, Senior Executive Director of Recruitment & Marketing for New York Blood Center. “We’ve always relied on the fall to provide a boost in blood donations from high school and college students hosting drives and this year we know this relief will not be coming.” NYBC began hosting a limited number of drives again this summer, however they are far from the number of drives per month needed to support area hospitals. NYBC is encouraging eligible donors of all ages to adapt to this new normal by making appointments to visit a one of its 19 donors centers, which have expanded capacity and hours of operation in order safely accommodate more

Town Dedicates Basketball Court In Memory of Massapequa Teenage Organ Donor Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board recently dedicated a basketball court at Anchor Park in Massapequa in memory of Tyler James Abizeid, a beloved Massapequa teen who was only 14 years old when he passed away. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently announced that the Lords of 52nd Street will play ‘one last summer blast’ drive-in concert at TOBAY Beach on Saturday,

September 12th at 7:00 p.m. This free concert will offer Town residents one last chance to soak up summertime fun before the fall season arrives. The Lords of 52nd Street features the legends of The

Billy Joel Band, including Richie Cannata, Liberty DeVitto, and Russell Javors. Supervisor Saladino stated, “The Lords of 52nd Street are legends of rock n’ roll and put on

an amazing performance each time out, recreating all of Billy Joel’s indelible hits that they were originally a part of. The Town is proud to present this free drive-in concert to residents.”
