Today, I turn 35, making that dreaded leap into the next age bracket. So long 1834. It’s been fun. Though age is but a number, it does tend to carry added significance the higher those digits climb. Each year brings with it a sort of reevaluation of life. Where am I at? Where do I want to be? And, most importantly, how to traverse that at-times tricky road between points A & B. Uneven as it might seem, I do believe we all have a path we are destined to travel. How we choose to navigate it remains somewhat open-ended. I’ve always felt my generation existed on the cusp of two worlds. A child of the 90’s, my teen years were spent listening to the sounds of *NSync and Britney Spears and watching T.G.I.F. on ABC
Friday nights. The entire grunge movement passed me by, as did many of the cult classic movies of the time. Twenty years later, I have found a new appreciation for all that came before. Pop culture aside, I feel my particular age group remains the last of the “old school.” We were brought up in an age where technology was limited to televisions and radios, Walkmen and cassette tapes. No one had a cell phone until I was well into college, perhaps a beeper if they were lucky. If you wanted to reach a friend, you called their home and most likely were greeted by their parents, who knew you by name. A night out consisted of being dropped off at the local mall or movie theater, then picked up by those same parents and taken

to a local diner. To say things have changed would be an understatement. Of course, this is the case with each generation, as its members grow and flourish and begin to explore the world on their own. We pick up on elements of those who came before and modify them to fit our constantly evolving view of our surroundings as they, too, evolve on a near daily basis. The hope, in the end, is that we will never completely let go of those things which shaped us during our most formative years, the core values we were raised with. No matter how life may change, no matter how many age brackets we pass through, we must remain true to ourselves. Here’s to 35. Here’s to the next chapter, a fresh page in the old book.

Long Island Game Farm - Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo was founded in 1970 by Stanley and Diane Novak. Today, almost 50 years later the park is home to over a hundred animals, including over 35 different species. To thank the visitors that have kept the park going for 48 years, the Long Island Game Farm is throwing its first ever Founder’s Day Celebration – A Family Appreciation Day, on Saturday, August 26. This experience, presented by “Nature” Nick Jacinto, is the only animal show in the northeast to include kangaroos, birds of prey and monkeys! Thousands of Long Islanders are expected to join the American Heart Association’s Long Island Heart Walk on Sunday, September 17th to raise funds to fight heart disease and stroke, America’s No. 1 and No. 5 causes of death. The annual event begins at 8:30 a.m. at Jones Beach, Field 5 in Wantagh. The non-competitive, three-mile walk includes teams of employees from local companies, along with friends and family members of all ages. “Walking briskly can lower your risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes as much as running” said Bob Isaksen, Market President, Bank of America, Long Island and Chair of the 2017 Long Island Heart Walk. “I look forward to working with Executive Leaders across Long Island to help raise awareness and funds for the American Heart Association to continue its mission to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke.” 80% of Cardiovascular

Federation of Organizations honored volunteers from its Foster Grandparent and Senior Companion programs this past June at Stonebridge Country Club in Smithtown, New York. More than 250 guests attended The Senior Volunteer Recognition Luncheon, held annually to recognize dedicated seniors making a difference in the lives of children with special needs as well as homebound seniors. During the event, emceed by News 12’s Doug Geed, Federation’s Chief Executive Officer, Barbara Faron, presented Chief Operating Officer Philip Matcovsky as the organization’s “Man of the Year,” for 30 years of outstanding service. Matcovsky joined Federation in 1987 as a counselor in the homeless outreach program before moving up the ranks to become a supervisor, director and Chief Operating Officer. As COO, Matcovsky has been instrumental in helping Federation and its 500 employees navigate major changes to managed care, while managing day-to-day
operations of an agency with a $48 million budget. He continues to strive for the best possible care for Long Island seniors, as well as individuals who are homeless or living with mental health challenges. Federation’s Senior Director of Outreach Services, Tracy Falkner, LMSW, awarded Volunteer of the Year Awards to Foster Grandparent Jeanette Ingenito and Senior Companion Lucy Caracciola for their exemplary care and service. The agency’s 140 Foster Grandparents currently mentor more than 2,500 children in Suffolk County, while Federation’s Senior Companion Program provides support and assistance to frail homebound seniors. Senator Phil Boyle (NYS 4th Senate District) and Ed Romaine, Town of Brookhaven Supervisor, served as Guest Speakers at the event, commending Federation’s volunteers for their efforts to enhance the quality of life of Long Island children and seniors. Other notable attendees included New York State Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre (Assembly
District 11) and Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi, who represents the Tenth Legislative District of New York. Representatives from Senator John E. Brooks’ office (NYS 8th Senate District) and Tom Croci’s office (NYS 3rd Senate District) were also in attendance. Successful Run M a s s a p e q u a International Little League’s Juniors Tournament team had a very successful run to make it to the NY State semi-final game in Dix Hills. The team won the
District 31 title and the Section 4 West title advancing to the NY State Tournament. In the State Tournament they defeated Syracuse 8-0 and LeGrange 7-0 before running into Ossining and falling to defeat 3-2. Ossining went

New Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino today honored TOBAY Beach Lifeguard John McGovern for an incredible 50 years of dedicated service to the residents of the Town of Oyster Bay. Since joining the Town of Oyster Bay as a Seasonal Lifeguard in 1967, John McGovern’s diligence and attention to detail, as well as his hard work and professionalism, earned him the enduring respect and admiration of his peers. “John has dedicated the last five decades of his life to protecting the lives of swimmers and beach enthusiasts at TOBAY Beach and we are very proud to celebrate this incredible milestone,” Supervisor Saladino said. “His love for the job and
his dedication to service are typical of the men and women who so ably serve as Town of Oyster Bay Lifeguards.” As a physical education teacher working in the Massapequa school district, McGovern felt lifeguarding was the perfect summer job. Initially John provided swim lessons at Florence Avenue Beach in the morning and then travelled to Tobay Beach to work as a lifeguard on the bayside in the afternoon. By 1975, John was a Senior Lieutenant at the ocean, joined by his wife Donna, who was a staff lifeguard. Through many years of hard work, and dedication to the beach, John became Assistant Captain in 1990 and was later joined by his son Kim, and his daughter Stacey, who were also ocean
guards. As of the summer of 2013, McGovern became the Captain of the TOBAY Lifeguards. With his leadership, the TOBAY lifeguard corps is second to none and remains the best trained, most loyal, and most dedicated corps on the east coast. “John established a legacy of excellence that makes him a role model for every lifeguard to follow in his footsteps thereafter,” Supervisor Saladino added. “Every day he watches over the sands and beaches of TOBAY, he exemplifies and upholds the finest traditions associated with ocean lifeguarding. He represents the best of the best and we thank him for his dedicated service to residents of the Town of Oyster Bay.”
PULLING THE RIGHT STRINGS - Massapequa High School sophomore James Kelly, a student assistant in the Summer Fine Arts program, gave incoming sixth-grader Tristan Ehrhardt a one-on-one violin lesson as part of the Advanced Orchestra class. Special Scout Honored
New Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Councilman Louis B. Imbroto and new Town Councilman Thomas P. Hand recently recognized soon-to-be 9th grader, Sophia Greco of the Girl Scouts Association in Plainedge, for her leadership and dedication to the community. Sophia started an
initiative called “A Day at the Beach” in which she organized a workshop at TOBAY Beach that covered first aid, water safety and lifeguarding. Sophia cleaned, painted, organized and stocked the first aid room and she assisted in stocking all the first aid bags for lifeguard stands and EMS. Sophia numbered
each lifeguard stand so that visitors could easily identify their whereabouts and she financed this entire volunteer project through cookie sales and babysitting. Supervisor Saladino thanked Sophia and congratulated her on her achievement, while she attained the Girl Scout Silver Award.
Returning the Favor
New Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino joined celebrity Mike Rowe at Northwell Rink on his new show “Returning the Favor,” while recognizing Bryan Blomquist for his outstanding community service. Mike’s show recognizes the good deeds of others and in turn does something special for them. Bryan Blomquist, President of Island Sled
Hockey, has dedicated much of his time to the organization’s enthusiastic young participants, serving as a role model and acting as a mentor. Under Bryan’s direction, Long Island Sled Hockey fosters, promotes and encourages sportsmanship, teamwork and camaraderie. Long Island Sled Hockey also focuses on the development and nurturing of positive
attitudes in and outside the Long Island community toward those with physical and/or mental handicapping conditions. Supervisor Saladino proudly presented Bryan with a proclamation declaring July 28th, 2017 to be “Bryan Blomquist Day.” Supervisor Saladino presented a citation to Mike for having such a positive impact on the community.
