Saladino Announces Return of Youth Dek Hockey League Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced that the Town’s Dek Hockey League will return for the fall season. The league will kick off this September and is open to boys and girls aged 6-14. Dek hockey is a variation of traditional ice hockey, where the games are played sans skates on the ‘dek’ of an ice rink after the ice has melted away for the season. The season will feature 10 games and practices over a 10-week period concluding with a playoff competition. “Boys and girls aged 6-14 who are enrolled in the Town’s Youth Dek Hockey League will have a great opportunity to not only improve their hockey skills, but to also learn important life lessons like good sportsmanship from our talented and dedicated coaching staff,” Supervisor Saladino said. “Dek Hockey is a really fun variation of traditional ice hockey, and I am excited for the boys and girls of our Town who will give this program a try!” Registration will take place at the Allen Park Community Room (45 Motor Ave, Farmingdale) on Tuesday, August 17th from 4:30PM8PM, and at Syosset Woodbury Community Park (In the Skatehouse) on Wednesday, August 18th from 4:30PM8PM. The program will cost $95 for residents, and $110 for non-residents. Each child will need to provide their own equipment, a list of which will be supplied upon registration. Families must provide proof of residency and a copy of their child’s birth certificate at registration. Only checks or money orders made payable to “Town of Oyster Bay” will be accepted. Long Island Live Steamers www.lilivesteamers.org
Located in Southaven County Park in Brookhaven (between exits 57 & 58 off Route 27 or exit 67 off the LIE) is the home of Long Island Live Steamers, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. They operate for the education and enjoyment of the public, and to preserve the history and wonderment of the glory days of railroading. All of their members are volunteers and very few of them are professional machinists, most of them are hobbyists. The uniting interest for them lies in steam power, railroad and having fun! The county has made about 8.5 acres of land available for them, which their railroad operates on. In fulfillment of the public trust use of park land, Long Island Live Steamers hosts visitor rides on our Public Run Days typically scheduled for the second and last Sundays of each month from the middle of May through the end of October. The hours of operation during a public run day are 10:30AM-3PM. There is no charge for rides on Run Days, however they accept donations of any size. Their operation is solely funded by donations. Although thousands of visitors enjoy visiting and riding on their railroad every year, most Long Islanders have either never heard of this organization, or if they have, have yet to visit them on one of their Public Run Days. Long Island Live Steamers may well be the best kept secret on Long Island. Almost everything you will see, ride on, or otherwise enjoy during your visit to Long Island Live Steamers was built, delivered, installed and maintained by their members.
Besides their ground track, they also have a dual gauge high line which features an elevated track, which runs through the forest. Rider Rules: For the Ground Line track, kids must be able to walk on their own in order to ride. For The high line track, riders must be at least 40” Tall to ride. Looking to host a birthday party at LI Live Steamers? You can! Reservations must be made to reserve a birthday party with the LI Live Steamers, however there is no limit to how many people can attend. Attendees can bring their own food and/ or cake (pizza parties are popular) and the organization provides picnic tables, that when sitting at you will have a great view of the action as multiple trains pass by!
