Eco-conscious lifestyles may have transformed the ways people behave at home or on the job, but many schools have taken a little longer to embrace eco-friendly practices. But that doesn’t have to continue, as younger generations of students are growing up green and ready to embrace some green strategies in the classroom. One of the easiest steps to take is to reduce paper usage. According to Edutopia, a K-12 learning and education resource, the average school uses approximately 250,000 pieces of paper per school year. This estimate is based on an average of 50 reams of paper per teacher at a 100-teacher school. Instead of relying so heavily on paper, students can take notes on laptops or tablets while teachers can rely on smartboards and notebooks for classroom lessons. When paper must be used, make a concentrated effort to discard it in designated recycling bins in each classroom.

My Little Corner of LI

Much has been written about the expense of living on Long Island, especially for us young-ish folk who have only recently set out on our own, away from the comfy confines of our childhood homes. I know plenty of fellow Lindy friends who have moved across the country upon graduating, precisely for this reason; however, just as many remain in the area, toughing out life on LI. Our mission: to make ends meet so as not to be forced to flee this island oasis that we call home. Sure, you may indeed get more for your money elsewhere; but where else can you be equidistant from the great landmarks of Manhattan and the beautiful beaches of Montauk? A mere vacation getaway for some, we are fortunate to reside here year round, through all four seasons of splendor. In that sense, there

are some perks you simply can’t put a price on. As often as I think I am paying way too much to live in my one bedroom apartment, when I take a look at the pristine grounds surrounding me, I realize I wouldn’t have it any other way. Nearly five years later, my little haven is quite completely furnished, and I have accumulated enough seasonal decor to last a lifetime, maybe two. Closet space… well, that’s another matter entirely. To think I have managed to fill every square inch of available storage in such a short span of time; well, it’s really pretty impressive (said she sheepishly). First item on the autumn “To Do” list: purge those closets, drawers and unreachable shelves of anything unnecessary. Consolidate, donate; whatever it takes to create a little more

breathing room. And stay away from those sales, more importantly, or we’ll be right back in the same boat a few months down the line. Perhaps my favorite space of all, though, is my little outdoor deck. While the view consists mainly of a parking lot and other surrounding apartments, I have made it my mission to fill the area with plants in every corner, twinkly white lights, solar garden ornaments - and of course my aqua-colored Adirondack chairs, the perfect accessory for all seasons. Many a summer day has been spent lounging here, listening to the sounds of birds chirping in the nearby tree, squirrels scurrying to and fro and watching the sun’s glow rise and fall as the hours pass. Living on Long Island… it ain’t for everyone, to be sure but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Survivors Honored

On Thursday, July 20th, 33 students who had been treated at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital for pediatric cancer, were the recipients of this year’s Dan Brooks Memorial Education Award. The award ceremony was held at the Hilton Garden Inn on the Stony Brook University Campus. The Sunrise Fund’s Daniel Brooks Memorial Educational Award for Students with Cancer was established in memory of Dan Brooks, a young man who completed treatment for leukemia at Stony Brook University Medical Center. Following his treatment, Dan went on to obtain his degree in Special Education. He felt his experience with childhood cancer motivated him to pursue a career helping children who also faced challenges. Additionally, Dan played a significant role in the development of the School Intervention and Re-entry Program, which transitions children with cancer back to the classroom following cancer treatment. Sadly, Dan’s life was cut tragically short in a motor vehicle accident. His spirit and dedication to education, and children with cancer, prevail through this program. The award was first given in 2003 to 4 student patients. Since then, we have presented 356 awards to 125 patients, totaling over $258,000.

100% of this money was raised by the grassroots efforts of staff, patients and their families, and our neighboring communities via walk-a-thons, car shows, calendar sales, and more. All graduates of the Pediatric Oncology Program at Stony Brook Children’s who are pursuing post High School education/training are eligible for this award. Two patients treated for potentially lifethreatening brain aneurysms will tell their stories when the Brain Aneurysm Center at Northwell Health’s Neuroscience Institute, along with the Brain Aneurysm Foundation (BAF), host Long Island’s Ninth Annual Brain Aneurysm Awareness Four-Mile Fun Run/TwoMile Walk at Jones Beach State Park on Saturday, September 23rd. Family members told County Community Ms. Bongiorno that her College

mother complained of severe headaches prior to the fatal aneurysm. Decades later, when Ms. Bongiorno started to experience headaches herself, she knew that she should get screened. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan revealed a brain aneurysm, and while it was small and would normally be left alone to be monitored over time, she was told to see a specialist because of her family history. Upon reviewing the MRI scan, Dr. Chalif explained that due to her family history, the aneurysm should be closely monitored for any changes in development. Ms. Bongiorno went for annual follow-ups over the next few years, but it wasn’t until August 2016 when growth was detected through a computed axial tomography (CAT) scan. Dr. Chalif clipped the aneurysm, cutting off blood flow to the artery in an October 2016 procedure. Clipping a brain aneurysm is a surgical procedure performed on both ruptured and unruptured aneurysms. The neurosurgeon works through a small opening in the skull, and once the aneurysm is located with the operating microscope, the neurosurgeon eliminates blood flow by placing a clip across the aneurysm’s base – allowing blood to flow normally elsewhere in the brain. Ms. Bongiorno has no neurological deficits from the surgery and has since encouraged her own children, ages 19 and 21, to also get screened. Family history also led Ms. Smith to get screened. Her sister died from a brain aneurysm nearly two decades ago. This past summer, Ms. Smith’s primary care physician recommended she get screened due to family history. A magnetic resonance angiogram (MRA) was performed, which revealed a brain aneurysm. She was referred to Dr. Chalif, and upon reviewing the MRA images, Dr. Chalif said

she was a good candidate to receive endovascular treatment with coils and a stent – another, more minimally invasive procedure to treat the brain aneurysm. Ms. Smith underwent an endovascular coiling and stenting procedure in January, performed by Dr. Setton. Coiling a brain aneurysm requires the insertion of a catheter into the femoral artery in the leg, which is then navigated through the blood vessels into the brain where the aneurysm is located. Soft platinum coils and a stent are inserted through the catheter and deployed in the aneurysm. The coils conform to the shape of the aneurysm, fill the sac and block blood flow to the aneurysm to prevent the aneurysm from rupturing. “Approximately 5 percent of brain aneurysms are linked to a family history,” said Dr. Chalif. “But due to the decisive actions of Ms. Bongiorno and Ms. Smith seeking medical attention because of their family history, their lives were saved due to early detection. By sharing their stories at our walk this year, they will undoubtedly help us spread awareness about the warning signs of a brain aneurysm and the importance of getting screened if you have a family history. We are extremely grateful to both of them and they should be commended for their extraordinary courage and strength.” Registration for the walk begins at 8:30 a.m. at Jones Beach State Park, Field 5, 1000 Ocean Parkway, Wantagh. The start time is 10 a.m. and the event will be held rain or shine. The registration fee is $25 through September 9th, $30 afterward. Entry fee includes the cost of parking and snacks. Teen Center Fosters Friendships

Fun and friendship are the basis of the Massapequa School District’s Teen Center at the high school’s Ames Campus. Students entering seventh and eighth grade are able to participate in the summer program, which includes games, sports, movies, arts and crafts, field trips and special events. Instead of following a schedule, students choose their activities. They play basketball in the gym, ping pong in the game room or sit and talk in the shade. This structure gives them a chance to experience increased independence and interact with different people throughout the day, especially the incoming seventh-graders who are coming together for the first time from the six elementary schools.

“I like that you can be with your friends and you feel like you have more of an opportunity to do what you want,” said seventhgrader Jen Cali, who previously participated in the Summer Recreation Program at Lockhart Elementary School. “I’ve also made some new friends here.” Christian Chramonte, a recent graduate of Fairfield Elementary School, said the Teen Center helps him stay active during the summer. “I’d rather play basketball for six hours than stay at home,” added eighthgrader Michael Jantz. “It’s more fun being with your friends.” The program is supervised by a director, assistant director and college assistants. Staff

members have risen through the ranks, as they previously worked as volunteers and then as counselors with the elementary summer recreation program when they were in high school. Many also are aspiring teachers and find the experience meaningful. Anthony Messina, the program’s assistant director, said field trips include Adventureland, laser tag, ziplining, the Long Island Aquarium, Cradle of Aviation, bowling alley and local pools. Special activities at the camp include All-American Burger lunch once a week, a visit from a smoothie truck and Olympic games with a tug of war, water balloon toss and a threelegged race.

HIGHEST RANK - Congratulations to Brendan Maloney of Massapequa Park Boy Scout Troop 339 for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest and most prestigious rank within the Boy Scout organization. For his Eagle Scout project, Brendan renovated an unused portion of land currently owned by the Ancient Order of Hibernians in Babylon, cutting down overhanging branches and mending the grass in the area. As a finishing touch, he built a horseshoe pit for everyone in the community to enjoy.

Summer in School Made Fun

The six elementary schools in the Massapequa School District are full of activities as hundreds of youngsters are participating in the Summer Recreation Program. The five-week camp, which runs every weekday through August 10th, is supervised by local high school and college students. “My mom always says, ‘Don’t sit home,’” said incoming sixth-grader Joey Santaniello, a longtime camper at Fairfield Elementary School. “I like being here and being with my friends.” Daily activities include arts and crafts, sports, games, playground time and movies. The buildings host special events such as Hawaiian Day, Halloween in July, scavenger hunts and a carnival. Field trips are also popular with visits to the town pool, bowling alley, roller skating rink, movie theater and miniature golf course. Annalise Lane, a sixthgrader at the Birch Lane Elementary School camp, said she likes to be active during the summer and enjoys spending time on the playground with her friends or playing sports in the gymnasium. She also said the counselors are really nice, and she hopes to become one in the future. Students are eligible to volunteer in the summer before ninth grade, and then can become paid counselors. There are also a handful of college assistants at each school, along with a director and assistant director. “We have a really good staff,” said Marcela Sepe, a Massapequa High School graduate who has

worked for the Summer Recreation Program for 15 years and has been director at East Lake Elementary School for seven. “I want the counselors to come up with activities in which the kids can have fun.” Samantha Albano, director at Fairfield, said the staff is encouraged to use the equipment that is available to make up games. “I want to make sure that the children are safe and having fun,” added Nicolette Sapochetti, who works with kindergartners at Fairfield. The incoming senior at Massapequa High School also attended the program as a child. Senior Charles Gugel, in

his fourth year working at East Lake, said he wants to be a teacher and believes this experience will help him. Ms. Sepe added that the program is a great opportunity for incoming kindergartners to meet some of their future classmates and get acclimated with their new school in an informal setting. “I think this is a great program and this district is very lucky to have it,” she said. “The children get to spend time with their friends in a different kind of setting in the summer.”

Young thespians are exploring musical theater as part of the Massapequa School District’s Summer Fine Arts Camp. The workshop is open to children and teens with all levels of acting ability and experience. Elementary students work in the high school’s little theater with music teacher Jeanine Yako, while older students practice on the auditorium stage under the direction of Katie Tauches, director of the annual middle school and high school musicals. They are supported by student assistants who have performed in past shows at Massapequa High

School. Ms. Tauches said the first week of each session includes theater games, which help students learn basic acting techniques and gets comfortable performing in front of others. During the second week, they rehearse musical numbers complete with choreography, selecting songs from various Broadway shows and Disney movies. “Everyone gets a chance to shine,” said incoming eighth-grader Jessica Lemay, who has performed in musicals at both Lockhart Elementary School and Berner Middle School. “The class helps us

get more comfortable on stage and it’s always fun.” The first session wrapped up on July 25th with a performance for family members, and a second 12day session began two days later which runs through mid-August. Finn Curley, who will be entering fifth grade at Lockhart, said he likes the summer theater program because he can sing with his friends. In the first session, he and his classmates choreographed a performance of “The Candy Man,” a musical number from “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.”

More than 300 students are exploring their artistic talents through the Massapequa School District’s Summer Fine Arts program. The fiveweek camp features classes in the visual arts, instrumental music and musical theater. Beginner level band and orchestra classes are open to students who will be playing an instrument with their school ensemble for the first time in September. Incoming fourth-graders made their selections in June and during the summer are learning how to unpack and set up their instruments, proper position and posture, reading notes and playing simple songs like “Mary Had a Little Lamb.” “You get an extra head start on what you’re going to learn during the year,” said McKenna Elementary School fourth-grader Reese Resustle, who selected the cello because

her father played it as a youngster. “I’m excited to play for him.” Advanced level music classes include more challenging pieces for students who already have completed a least one year of instruction. Band teacher Gary Locke designs his course around student input. “The songs we play are 100 percent their decisions,” he said. “They get to pick what they want to do.” Twins Erin and Kathleen Tumminello, who will be entering eighth grade, are in the acoustic guitar class with music teacher Tom Tucker. “I’m enjoying everything about this course,” Kathleen said. “I went from not knowing how to play the guitar at all to being decent at it in just two weeks.” A Celtic fiddling class is new to the program this year, led by music teacher

Katherine Cahalan. Students are learning traditional Irish songs such as “Swallowtail Jig.” Incoming sixth-grader Cormac Hale, who already has experience with string instruments, said he took the class to learn about music that is part of his heritage. Visual arts classes are giving students exposure to several different mediums. They created still-life paintings, selfportraits and scrapbooks in the painting and drawing class, and plates and bowls in ceramics. The iPad Claymation course combines traditional art skills with technology as children create their own movies using stop-motion animation. Other classes this summer include jewelry making, decorative arts, watercolor techniques and art history.
