Nearly 40 students in French language classes in the Massapequa School District earned recognition for their performance on the National French exam, Le Grand Concours. It was sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French. Several students from Berner Middle School were medal winners for their high achievement. Earning silver recognition were Rosalie Avalos, Madelyn Breves, Fiona Hayes and Sofia Villegas, with Theresa Mannino, Jenna Muscatello and Kaitlyn Stella receiving bronze medals. Honorable mention awards went to

Kathleen Arfaoui, Ava Bendowski, Ava Geaniotis, Regan Healy, Ella Henry, Joshua Holden, Catherine O’Connell and Brady Sanders. At Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus, ninth grader Lindsey Black earned a bronze medal. From the high school’s main campus, Talia Catafalsa and Adriana Kamor received gold medals. Silver medal recipients were Jack Devenish and Juliette Liebov, and bronze medal awards went to Sarah Benedict, Kaela Brunner, Ashley DiStefano, Olivia Hinck, Alexander Lauless and Claire Russell.

Free Skin Cancer Screening Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced a partnership with Northwell Health to host a Free Skin Cancer Screening on Friday, August 9th, from 12pm - 2pm at Marjorie Post Community Park, located on Merrick Road in Massapequa. This free skin cancer screening places the health and wellness of residents as a priority throughout the dog days of summer, following the successful installation of free sunscreen dispensers all Town pools and beaches, as well as the golf course, which had also been provided by Northwell Health. “We’re so proud to partner with Northwell Health throughout the summer to protect the health and wellness of our residents from

the potential dangers of prolonged exposure to the sun without the proper preventative measures. This free skin cancer screening provides an opportunity for residents to receive a free skin examination performed by a boardcertified dermatologist,” said Supervisor Saladino. “This awareness and outreach program further promotes a mindfulness of the potential dangers of increased sun exposure.” The Free Skin Cancer Screening will be conducted at Marjorie Post Park in Massapequa by the dedicated and qualified staffs of Plainview Hospital and Syosset Hospital. Screenings will be performed on a firstcome, first-serve basis (no appointments required or accepted) and residents

players make it exciting for the youngsters with different competitions like a homerun derby and relay races. “All of the counselors were campers at one point, and they remember how special camp was for them,” he said. “They want give back to the program.” More than 40 girls, entering grades 4-8, took part in the field hockey camp at Berner Middle School Stadium during the third week of July. Coach Melodee Ahrens, her assistant coaches Nicole Scoca and Nicole Sicitella, and former and current players from the varsity team worked with participants on skills such as dribbling, passing and sweeping. Whether they play for a school team or a travel team, Coach Ahrens said the goal is to help the girls bring their field hockey play to the next level and to build their confidence. Football camp was held on the Massapequa High School field from July 1519 for students entering kindergarten through

eighth grade. Children were split into groups based on age, and traveled from station to station where they participated in drills led by high school football players. Coach Kevin Shippos said he wanted children to learn the game in a safe setting while having fun, too. He added this year’s motto was “One family” to emphasize that even though the camp featured students from elementary to high school with different skill levels, they were all there together as Massapequa Chiefs. Berner Middle School students Michael Dietrich attended football camp for the third time and said he aspires to play in high school. He liked the format of the program, with scrimmage games at the end of camp to practice all the skills they learned throughout the week. “It helps me with fundamentals,” he said of the camp, “and helps me get better to know what to do in a game situation.”

The fields and gymnasiums in the Massapequa School District are full of activity this summer as hundreds of children are participating in the annual Sports Camp. There are 16 different programs offered this year for boys and girls including baseball, basketball, cheerleading, field hockey, football, golf, gymnastics, lacrosse, soccer, softball, speed and agility training, track and field, volleyball and wrestling. The four-week baseball camp at Massapequa High School, for children ages 7-13 averages more than 100 daily participants working with varsity coach Tom Sheedy, assistant coach Chris Cafiero and current and former high school players. Students practice different baseball skills as they rotate through stations, working on their bunting, fielding, hitting, pitching, running and throwing. Coach Sheedy said that the goal is for children to have fun, get exercise and improve their baseball abilities. The high school

Emilia Thuma was accepted to the famous School of American Ballet, the training school for the New York City Ballet, received a generous scholarship to NYU for dance education and an academic assistance

scholarship to Hofstra. Sara Jansen received a full scholarship to the New York Theatre Ballet, and performed professionally in New York. Sara also danced with the American Ballet Theatre at Lincoln Center in Romeo and Juliet, and, in July 2004, was invited to dance with the Richmond Ballet in Virginia. The studio now competes regionally and nationally as well. Classes are offered in ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop/ street dance, modern, Irish step, acro for boys and girls, musical theatre for boys and girls and Terrific Toddler Time for boys and girls.

The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation. This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island. The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology departments, Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead and St. Joseph’s College. Survivors from all over Long Island are welcome to get involved with The Social Brain. On average, each event they host has about 30-40 participates and there is no age restrictions. Recently a 4-week session hosted by The Social Brain and Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead started to help survivors learn social skills, build friendships, find cues from others and interact with peers. The first session was on August 6th and the following 3 sessions will be on August 13th, 20th and 27th. Age groups are broken down from ages 5-7, 8-12, teens and adults. information. On August 16th at 6:30PM, The Social Brain is hosting a “Basket Night Fundraiser” at the Sound Beach Property Owners Association. This will be fun night with 250 plus baskets and prizes being raffled off; top raffles include brand new bicycles from Walmart and an overnight stay at Gurney’s in Montauk. All are welcome to attend! If you bring school supplies to be donated, you will receive a single raffle ticket for each item you donate. Additionally, on September 22nd all are welcome to come support this organization and enjoy an afternoon out at the ballpark with family and friends! The Social Brain is hosting a day at the ballpark to watch the Long Island Ducks game at 1:35PM. Tickets are $15.00 a person and parking is free. There will be a pre-game autograph session with all players on the field and children will be able to run the bases post game. Lastly, the Social Brain is available to attend group meetings to speak about head injury prevention. Topics can include mental health prevention, drug abuse, bike/wheeled safety, sport safety, concussions, anti-bullying and asking for help when needed.
