More than 300 students are studying music, art and theater through the Massapequa School District’s Summer Fine Arts Camp, which is being run in partnership with Nassau BOCES. The series of one- and two-week programs are held at Massapequa High School, and run through August 5th. Coordinator Jessica Wyman, a band teacher at McKenna Elementary School, said the program, open to students entering third through 10th grade, has its largest enrollment ever this year. In instrumental music, jazz band, acoustical

guitar and orchestra classes, students are learning to play a variety of instruments, with separate sessions for beginner and advanced student-musicians. A musical theater camp, under the direction of Berner music teachers Katie Tauches and Christina Guando, allows students to select Broadway songs to perform including solos, duets and ensemble musical numbers. Visual arts classes include drawing and painting, jewelry making, sculpture, watercolor techniques and art history. In ceramics,

Memoir in the Making By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

As of this writing, I have published 573 columns. During the course of those, it has often occurred to me that some – mainly those with more of a personal touch – would make a solid foundation for a mini-memoir of sorts, a highlight reel of those experiences which have shaped the last decade or so of my life. I recently took the time to scan through each one, briefly, with an eye on setting aside those which I felt were, at the very least, worth a second look. It’s amazing, when you read them one after another, how the narrative weaves together, providing a glimpse into whatever happened to be my thoughts at that particular moment in time. Sure, there were the fluffy, filler-type accounts of seasons changing and deadlines crunching, of miscellaneous

musings on life, and people; random rants and reader feedback. But among the hundreds were some solid accounts of current events, heartfelt profiles of loved ones, and momentous occasions in my life. And, of course, we can’t forget about Buddy’s 20 or so contributions to the cause, perhaps better suited for an illustrated children’s series in his own right. (We do know how he hates to share the spotlight.) This initial scan was just the first step; but, after two days of skimming, I had set aside close to one hundred of my favorites. Not a bad beginning. My hope, over time, is to provide the narration necessary to connect the dots, perhaps throw in some favorite quotations, photography to illustrate the progression… and see where it winds up.

It is, mostly, a project for me – a labor of love encompassing all those hobbies which I hold dear. Of course, if and when it all comes together, I would love to share it with my family and friends, and readers, if they would care to revisit this abridged anthology. In the interim, I welcome any feedback and suggestions those readers might care to offer – favorite columns, stories that stood out over the years, topics you would like to see covered in the coming weeks… anything at all. School’s Abuzz A Summer Recreation Program in the Massapequa School District is giving students a great opportunity to spend some time with their friends and stay active during the break. More than 1,200 students are taking part in the five-week program, which is offered at the six elementary schools. Children entering kindergarten through sixth grade attend the program at their regular school. Daily activities include arts and crafts, games and sports. There are also regular field trips including miniature golf, roller skating, the pool, White Post Farm and Adventureland.

There are also several theme days throughout the summer, and weekly lunches from All-American Burger. Each school hosts a Carnival Day on July 29th, with talent shows and arts and crafts exhibits on August 4th. The decades-old camp, which runs through August 5th, is open for six hours each day. Ron D’Angelo, the summer recreation coordinator, said it is a way for children to have fun and is affordable for parents. About 200 students are enrolled in the Teen Center Program at the Ames Campus for those entering seventh through ninth grades. The students are free to choose their

activities, with rooms set up for sports, games, movies and art, along with outdoor activities. There are also trips to the Cradle of Aviation Museum, an adventure course, I-Max movies and more. For incoming seventhgraders, they can meet their soon-to-be classmates at Berner Middle School. “It gives a lot of opportunities for the kids to make friends,” said counselor Ashley Lopresti, a 2014 Massapequa High School graduate, who took part in Summer Recreation as a child. “The friends that you make at your summer camp are usually the friends that you have for life.”

Admins Appointed

The Massapequa School District Board of Education appointed five administrators earlier this month. Three of the appointees are moving from other positions within the district. Deja Berry has been named the executive assistant to the principal at the main campus of Massapequa High School. She previously worked at Berner Middle School, where she was most recently the interim curriculum associate of mathematics. Ms. Berry began her teaching career in 1996 and came to Massapequa in 2011. Barbara Lowell, a Massapequa native, will serve as the executive

assistant to the principal at Berner Middle School, a position she has held on an interim basis since December. She began her career in Massapequa as a social studies teacher at Berner in 1999, and later became the dean of students. Kenneth Wing becomes the new dean of students at Massapequa High School. He graduated from Berner when it was a high school, and later worked there as a middle school math teacher. The 25-year veteran in education most recently taught math and served as the parttime attendance officer at the Ames campus. New to the district are Michael Gargiulo and

The athletic fields and gymnasiums in the Massapequa School District are full of activity this summer, with more than 1,000 students participating in sports camps which run through July. The camps, which are primarily held at Massapequa High School’s main campus and Berner Middle School, include baseball, basketball, cheerleading, field hockey, football, golf, gymnastics, lacrosse, soccer, softball, track and field, volleyball and wrestling, and are led by many of the district’s coaches. Ron D’Angelo, summer recreation coordinator, explained that participants learn rules and etiquette

of each sport by taking part in drills and practice games. “They get to learn basic skills,” he said. “It’s a great way to spend your morning, three or four hours a day getting some exercise.” At the baseball camp at Berner, students rotate through a dozen stations including pitching, hitting, baserunning and defensive skills, as well as a Home Run Derby. In its 21st year, the program is led by varsity coach Tom Sheedy and assistant coach Chris Cafiero, featuring a five-week program for ages 7-13 and a three-week “Future Stars” program for ages 5-6. Instructors include past Massapequa baseball players. “Summer was

great because of the camp. It helped me just love the game,” said Matt Donofrio, a 2016 graduate who attended the program as a child, went on to play for the varsity team, and now is an instructor. “I love teaching them because they have so much energy. They get up every morning wanting to come to camp.” This year also marks the return of the Speed, Agility and Conditioning program for high school students, which helps them train for any sport. The Under the Lights Basketball Program, held at Fairfield Elementary School, allows students in fourth through seventh grades a chance to play evening games for fun.

Helping Districts Improve Nassau BOCES has earned a $150,000, threeyear research grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF). The grant will fund the multiphase project, “Building Community and Capacity for DataIntensive EvidenceBased Decision Making in Schools and Districts.” The project is designed to improve the way districts use data to inform instruction. The NSF grant project is a collaborative partnership between Nassau BOCES and the Teachers College, Columbia University, and will focus on maximizing the usefulness of the Nassau BOCES Data Warehouse for educators. Grant writer Dr. Alex J. Bowers, an Associate Professor of Education Leadership at the Teachers College, Columbia University, sees

tremendous potential in the data warehouse. By the end of the grant, Nassau BOCES may be poised to serve as a national model of what a data warehouse should be. Year one of the grant will focus on collecting and analyzing information from Nassau County school districts. The Teachers College, Columbia University will conduct a large-scale survey to determine how effectively educators are able to get the data they need from the data warehouse and how they are using that data to inform instruction. Results of the survey will help to improve the current data warehouse system to better serve the needs of educators, as well as to strengthen professional development opportunities. “This is an extremely

Johnson recently attended the New York American Water Grant Check Presentation to the Town of Oyster Bay to construct two new rain gardens at Marjorie Post Park in Massapequa. The presentation took place in front of a similarly constructed rain garden at the Western Water Front of Theodore Roosevelt Park in Oyster Bay. New York American Water is an

organization committed to delivering high quality water and offers annual Environmental Grant Program funds for innovative, communitybased environmental projects that improve, restore or protect the watersheds, surface water and/or groundwater supplies in local communities. The proposed rain gardens will take advantage of rainfall and storm water and reduce rain runoff by

allowing storm water to soak into the ground as opposed to flowing into storm drains and surface waters which causes erosion, water pollution, flooding and diminished groundwater. The rain gardens will improve water quality in nearby bodies of water and ensure that rainwater becomes available for plants as groundwater rather than being sent through storm water drains straight out to sea.

Further, CHP isn’t just medical coverage,” Vavrinec continued. “A lot of people don’t realize that CHP comprehensively addresses medical, dental and vision care.” With more than 78,000 members, Fidelis Care is the largest CHP plan in the State. Fidelis Care earned an overall rating of five stars - the highest rating available - in the New York State Department of Health’s 2015 Regional Consumer Guides to Managed Care for Medicaid and Child Health Plus. Even if your family must pay the full premium due to income requirements, Fidelis Care still offers some of the lowest rates available. If you wish to enroll your child, you may do so any time of year. You may enroll online through the NY State of Health website, nystateofhealth. gov. If you apply by the 15th of the month, coverage for your child will begin on the first of the following month. Online research aside, one of the most convenient ways for New York State residents to learn more about and enroll in CHP is to visit any one of Fidelis Care’s area community offices. STAFF PICNIC - A great time was had by all at the 12th annual NuHealth/NUMC Staff Picnic, with Dr. Politi, President/CEO and the executive staff cooking and serving the food. AHP and NUMC Therapeutic Recreation Staff worked together to provide a fun filled day for all the children who attended to include face painting, tattoos, arts & crafts, the Hot Potato game, water relay races, hula hoop fun and water balloon toss. There was lots of dancing with music provided by NUMC’s Walter Lazauskas, John Walters Music. A delicious barbecue meal was provided by Deborah Perrone, Director of Food and Nutrition. And a special thank you to Sam and Mr. Heatley for doing the cooking.

Cliff “Kip” Johannesen, who at one point was paralyzed and in a wheelchair but now is able to walk with the assistance of canes is offering services as a U.S. Coast Guard Licensed Captain and P.A.D.I Master Diver to people with disabilities in the Long Island/NYC Area. With his boat, docked in Lindenhurst, he is volunteering his spare time to take children with disabilities (along with a parent or guardian) or disabled veterans on fishing, snorkeling and boating trips in the Great South Bay.
